Family Bilingualism
Velínská, Mariana ; Hofmannová, Marie (advisor) ; Matuchová, Klára (referee)
The aim of this work is to provide future parents and teachers of bilingual children with a theoretical survey of bilingualism. In the theoretical part I introduce bilingualism as a more general phenomenon and then in connection with raising children in a bilingual family. I also cover linguistic issues, biculturalism and effects of bilingualism on children. The practical part is presented in a case study of four siblings aged three, five, seven and nine who come from a Czech-American family living in the Czech Republic. On the basis of my observations and study of appropriate literature, I came to a conclusion that besides the conflict of two cultures, in which bilingual children grow up, these children go through specific stages of their language development, which is accompanied by particular mistakes in either of their two languages. Teachers at schools do not know about these points at issue and, therefore, do not consider the developmental mistakes of bilingual children when assessing them according to the 'monolingual norms'.

Tejkalová, Lenka ; Hofmannová, Marie (advisor) ; Novotná, Jarmila (referee)
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a contemporary trend in education. It refers to every situation where a subject or its part is taught in a foreign language. The focus of this work is Mathematics in English. My aim was to confirm or reject the hypothesis of CLIL being motivating for the students and possible to implement in the Czech educational system. In the first part of this work, I focused on methodology related to CLIL, analyzing the language-teaching and general educational theories, methods and strategies used in CLIL lessons. The second part consisted of a minor survey on CLIL implementation in Prague and related opinions and attitudes of the school representatives. The third part presented detailed description of a CLIL lesson plan and reflection on my four teaching experiments. The CLIL lesson proved to be motivating for the students and seen as beneficial by the teachers, the methods chosen were appreciated; however, there are several issues that need to be dealt with in terms of successful CLIL implementation in the Czech Republic.

After combining both theoretical and practical findings, the goal is to figure out possible solutions and suggestions to change or to improve the current situation. This thesis works with real data based on personal experience gained at different schools and also based on personal interviews with students and teachers.
