Eduard Albert and The Realists. Eduard Albert and His Role in Czech Politics in the 1880s and 1890s
Kokešová, Helena ; Hlavačka, Milan (advisor) ; Pokorný, Jiří (referee) ; Galandauer, Jan (referee)
My doctoral thesis focuses on Eduard Albert (1841-1900), who was a significant figure in Czech and Austrian scientific, cultural, as well as political circles at the end of the 19th century. I concentrated my research primarily on the relatively unknown aspects of Albert's life, i.e. his private life and political activities. My fundamental question was: what kind of role did a man, whose professional career and social status in Vienna reached brilliant heights, play in Czech political life? Although he initially resisted openly engaging in politics, he found he could not stand completely on the sidelines. Albert's relationship to the Realist group reveals that Albert was vitally interested in contemporary political events. He was no mere passive observer - he often actively interfered in Czech politics. Another topic I focused on was Albert's attitude toward the Czech Academy of Arts and Sciences. Even in this instance, the creation of the Czech Academy wasn't a purely scientific question, but was to a great extent a political decision. The thesis is divided into six main chapters, the composition of which combines chronological and thematic approaches. In the introduction I tried to define the topic and establish a conceptual framework; I summarized the research up to now and analyzed the most...

Votavová, Šárka ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Hlavačka, Milan (referee)
The abstract The present work deals with the circumstances and the course of racing in Bohemia since the 70 the 19th the 20th century the 20 century. The work is divided into three parts, the first of which deals with the emergence of the Pardubice racecourse, the second is devoted to the racetrack in the United Chuchle and the last focuses on Napajedla Stud. Each chapter is written the history of the body and the subsequent derivation of the social context as was the fashion, the status of women in racing, the creation of new jobs or the formation of a new type of man. The main goal of the work is to uncover racing sport as a social phenomenon but also a conglomerate of institutions that cannot be separated. Without Stud in Napajedla would hardly ensure a supply of quality horses and without the Great Pardubice and its traditions through the nobility would be difficult to create a racecourse in Great Chuchle. The work is not focused on one-sided description of the races, but understanding the issue overall. Many works dealing with the environment ignores the coherence races, and social aspects of this sport. In the examples of fashion, organizing auctions or race meeting as shown on the one hand were the elite races and issues on the other hand, created new space for entertainment and for entrepreneurs.

Polley, Ivana ; Hlavačka, Milan (advisor) ; Kudrna, Ladislav (referee) ; Konečný, Karel (referee)
The subject-matter of this dissertation paper is the description and analysis of the topic of the post-war fate of certain Czechoslovak pilots in Great Britain in the post-war years. In the introduction to this paper, I outline the atmosphere at the time and the process of integration of western pilots in Czechoslovakia after liberation. The paper at the same time addresses the efforts of the British wives of these pilots to assimilate into Czechoslovak society. The changes in the political circumstances, especially, compelled the RAF pilots to start considering leaving Czechoslovakia again. After February 1948, the persecution of the RAF officers was already evident. Political purges in the armed forces compelled them to leave Czechoslovakia again. The paper typologises the exodus of the RAF pilots abroad into subgroups and for each of these subgroups, it demonstrates the various and clearly very similar fates of the pilots, which are linked by departure to Great Britain, where they served in the RAF during the war. The typology of the exodus differentiates those pilots who remained in Great Britain and did not return to Czechoslovakia after the war and those that left legally and those that left the country illegally and emigrated. To clarify the problems of hijack of aircraft, the form of back...

Augustin Navrátil This thesis addresses the life and work of Augustin Navrátil (1928-2003), a Roman- -Catholic activist from the Moravian township of Lutopecny near Kroměříž. A. Navrátil has not been subject of a complex publication yet, although he is the author of the largest petition demanding religious - and with that going hand in hand also civic - liberties in socialist Czechoslovakia (1988, 600 000 signatures). Followingly, this is the first attempt to biographically outline the personality and motivations of this farmer, politician (member of the party Lidova strana), man who signed Charta 77 but also a husband and father of nine children. The aim is to cover his life from his birth, over his family background to the beginnings and heights of his social engagement. The text will mainly deal with 22 open letters in which he drew attention to various illegal practices and actions of the Communist power, as well as with the three petitions he authored (1978, 1985 a 1988) and the samizdat (self-published) journal Křesťanské obzory (Christian horizons), which he published with a group of others from June 1988 to July 1990.
