Elements of "Metatheatr" in selected Plautus' Comedies
Jindrová, Olga ; Kuťáková, Eva (advisor) ; Bažil, Martin (referee)
This master thesis aims to describe the creation of dramatic illusion based on the interaction of three elements: actor - play - spectator. It also seeks to define metatheatre as a defiance of the dramatic illusion. It distinguishes the notion of metatheatre from the one of play-within-play in general. Specific Plautus'use of the metatheatre technique follows with respective examples from four of his comedies: Amphitruo, Aulularia, Cistellaria and Pseudolus.
Animum Tali Ratione Tenere. The Communication Strategy in the First Book of Lucretius'Didactic Epic De Rerum Natura.
Pastyříková, Iveta ; Kuťáková, Eva (advisor) ; Bažil, Martin (referee)
The bachelor thesis analyzes the means of the communication strategy in the first book of Lucretius' didactic epic De Rerum Natura and its methodological approach is based on a communication model consisting of several levels of literary communication. Attention is paid to the sources of authority of the speaker portrayed in the text, to power he assigns to language and then to partial devices which help to increase communication potential of the text, primarily to images of the addressee portrayed in the text. Problem of his concreteness as well as the manner in which the speaker judges his ability and willingness to learn are considered to be important factors influencing the perception of the text by real reader. Various roles made up of metaphors and similes which the addressee is endowed with are examined as the ways in which the speaker in the text expresses his conception of a learning process.
The christian conversion of the traditional poetic genres in the work of Paulinus of Nola
Procházka, Pavel ; Bažil, Martin (advisor) ; Kuťáková, Eva (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the way in which Paulinus of Nola employs the classical literary heritage in his genre poems. The object of analysis in particular are his carm. 17 (propemptikon), carm. 25 (epithalamion) and carm. 31 (consolatio). The base of comparison are those poems of classical Roman poets that belong to these genres, especially those of Statius, and also Menander the Rhetors treatise Peri epideiktikon.
Religious aspects of the Virgil cult in late antiquity
Koronthály, Pavel ; Bažil, Martin (advisor) ; Kuťáková, Eva (referee)
The thesis addresses, from the point of view of literary history and from the religionistic point of view, the so called Virgil cult, which had developed around the poet's work, but gradually outgrew the borders of literature and culture as such and, in late Antiquity, became a religious phenomenon in the first place. The first part of the thesis deals with Virgil's position in the education system of Rome, which was essential in him becoming the first among Roman poets. The second part focuses on the Virgil cult in traditional "pagan" literature, in which Virgil becomes a cultural icon. The last part deals with the effort of Christian authors to "christianize" Virgil through Christian interpretation of his work.
'Pindarus Christianus?': the hymnic production of Prudentius
Pacherová, Laura ; Bažil, Martin (advisor) ; Kuťáková, Eva (referee)
In this thesis I focused on the comparison of Prudentius to Pindaros, which has been mentioned in literature since the 16th century. I based my theory of a 'Pindaric Hymn' on several comparisons, specifically on expressive features of Pindars' poetic language, which I've found in the work of Prudentius. I've also found a possible intermediary, Horatius, whose work also includes several features of 'Pindaric Hymn', moreover there were specific references to Pindar and his poems and on the other hand, I've found evident traces of Horace in Prudentius. I came to conclusion, that despite of all similarities, Prudentius didn't know Pindars' work directly.
Propemptikon and other traditional forms in Horace's Odes and Epodes
Prokopcová, Lenka ; Kuťáková, Eva (advisor) ; Bažil, Martin (referee)
The dissertation concerns a literary form designated as "propempticon" and its typical representatives within Horace - Epode X and Odes I 3 and III 27. The initial definition of the term "propempticon" itself is followed by a list of propempticon examples in Greek poetry - where the archaic Greek lyrics are concerned no complete piece of work has been preserved which could be designated as propempticon, only individual motives characteristic for this literary form within one piece of work are always present. These motives were later developed by poets of the Hellenistic period and later the propempticon appeared in works of epigrammatic as an individual literary form. Closer attention is paid to propempticon in Roman poetry before Horace. An analysis is carried out in the dissertation of the two preserved fragments from Parthenius' piece, an example of the first known propempticon in Roman literature, and further in the five fragments of Cinna's propempticon dedicated to Asinius Pollio. The following chapter summarizes motives characteristic for propempticon in archaic Greek lyrics and Hellenistic poetry on the one hand and Roman poetry of the 1st century BC on the other. Theoretic essay on propempticon from the rhetor Menander of Laodice (3rd century BC) is mentioned in brief. The body of the dissertation...

Centones Christiani. Intertextual transformations of one form of the Latin Christian poetry of late antiquity
Nečetné kritiky (Tertullianus, Hieronymus, Decretum Gelasianum) vycházejí z ortodoxních křesťanských pozic a kritizují spíše nevhodnost spojení biblického obsahu s "pohanskou'' slovní formou než princip centonu jako takový. V dalším období, které začíná v druhé polovině 18. století, vychází převažující záporné hodnocení centonové poezie ze změny v pojetí umělecké tvorby, pro niž podle dobových...
Conception of language and style by M. Cornelius Fronto (translation and commentary)
Ctibor, Jan ; Bažil, Martin (advisor) ; Mouchová, Bohumila (referee)
This thesis is one of the first works in the Czech language dealing with the personality and work of Marcus Cornelius Fronto, Roman rhetor of 2. century A. D. and teacher of Marcus Aurelius. After the palimpsest with the correspondence of Fronto was found in early 19th century, the reputation of this man suffered greatly. The man had been seen for many decades as superficial and flat archaisator, whose letters have no or only very little value for us. The aim of this tesis is to examinate the most problematical questions connected with Fronto, firstly his attitude to philosophy and the opinion, that archaism is the main and ubiquitous characteristic of his style. This theoretical treatise is accompanied with translation of several selected texts.
Theatre Aspects of the Gregorian Chant
Sedláčková, Anna ; Bažil, Martin (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
Western plainchant does constitutive part of the medieval perfomances of the Easter liturgical ceremonies (liturgical plays). Its musical component noticably takes part on the scenic setting. It is the research and work with the manuscripts originated from St. George?s convent on the Prague castle (12. ? 14. century), that allow us to display this conclusive argument. The engagement of the plainchant as the performative element happens particularly in the musical interpretation of the text. It reflects the system of constructive cogitation with the abilities to select, to make a choice of the melodic part in order to shape the liturgic units in the service of the perfomance.
