Cavaliers on the journey through Europe and time. Traveller reflexions of three Bohemian aristocrats from the beginning of the 17th century to the beginning 18th century
Kubíčková, Irena ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Holý, Martin (referee)
The main topic of the thesis called "Cavaliers on the journey through Europe and time. Traveller reflexions of three Bohemian aristocrats from the beginning of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century" is an insight into the life and way of thinking of three early modern Bohemian aristocrats - travellers (Bedrich from Donin, Lev Vilem from Kounice and Krystof Vaclav from Nostice) through their literary work from their journeys. The main sources for this thesis were three contemporary travel books or rather travel diaries available to the wide public of researchers by the editions. The main subject of my research is to display and analyse the intellectual world of aristocrats-travellers on the basis of some specific categories and aspects characteristic to their literary works (social status, religion, age, type of journey and itinerary, representative retinue, the main spheres of their interest and attention, language form and stylistics, composition, etc.). The presented thesis also focuses on demonstrating the many-sided use of travel diaries and points to this specific type of document as a peculiar historical source. Key words: early modern era, travelling, travel books and travel diaries, czech lands, aristocracy
King Pest and his theatre Prague. Plague epidemics in early modern-period Prague.
Jarošová, Eva ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Mikulec, Jiří (referee)
In 1348 the plague struck Europe and held it in its grip until the 18th century. The Czech lands were no exception, although regular outbreaks are not reported until after 1348. The disease was caused by yersinia pestis bacteria and transmitted primarily by the common rat. It took three different forms: pneumonic, septicemic, and bubonic. The year 1348 marked the most significant outbreak of the pandemic, referred to as the Black Death. However, the infection did not spread significantly to Prague and Bohemia until 1380. The societal crisis caused by the Black Death is reflected in art, particularly the so called Dance of Death and Triumph of Death paintings. Plague columns associated with the cult surrounding anti-plague saints became common sights in Bohemia. St. Maria was universally revered. St. Sebastian, St. Rocco, and St. Rosalie were invoked specifically for protection against the plague. Individual countries also sought protection from their national patrons, such a St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. In Bohemia, the plague is more commonly associated with modern rather than medieval times. Outbreaks recurred roughly every twelve years. In an effort to curb the epidemic, plague orders were enacted. These documents provided for quarantine measures, the closing of borders, the...
Self-presentation of Polyxena Lobkovic of Pernštejn on the basis of her correspondence with Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel of Lobkoic
Tůmová, Ludmila ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Holý, Martin (referee)
The main topic of this bachelor thesis is the self-presentation of a well known renaissance noblewoman Polyxena Lobkovic of Pernstein (15661642). As the main source of information about her self-presentation the author used the correspondence which she and her husband, the high chancelor of The Czech kingdom Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel of Lobkovic, exchanged. In these texts we can see how this noblewoman shows herself in different social roles (wife, mother, noblewoman, suzerain, ill and suffering woman and worshipper). Author describes her stylization into these roles and compare her self-presentation in this way with other noblewomen of sixteen and seventeen century.
Jan Šembera Černohorský of Boskovice, gentleman of the Moravian Renaissance
Dufková, Kateřina ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Holý, Martin (referee)
The bachelor thesis is conceived as a short biography of Jan Šembera Černohorský of Boskovice, the last male descendant of the old aristocratic family of Boskovice. The Moravian aristocrat, who lived in the second half of the 16th century, excelled extraordinary wealth, but especially his renaissance bon vivant lifestyle. The work reflects his life from childhood until death, which added to the context of the time and the early modern aristocratic society and ends with a takeover of the Boskovice's legacy by the house of Liechtenstein. Based on the primary and secondary sources it deals also with the nobleman's own personality and eventually faces out to the heritage of legends and stories as well as early historiography.
Preacher and exemplum between scholar and popular culture in early modern period
Tomášek, Vojtěch ; Mikulec, Jiří (referee) ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor)
This study deals with a two terms used in the context of culture and social history: the preacher and the exemplum. We depart from six Czech ear1y modem sermons published in the 17th and 18th century, especially from specific parts of them, those in which we can find those short moralizing stories, exempla. We analyse exemplum in its oral form as an communicative point between the preacher and his audience in the larger context of communication between a scholar and popular culture. Here we present sermonic exemplum as a specific type of ear1y modem medium. This study would attempt to outline some features of this communicative situation, especially preacher' s tendency to reform and discipline some aspects of everyday life in his community, that is everyday common problems of man and woman, problems of distributing gender roles and interconnected problems of drinking, domestic violence and sexuality. We have found two specific ways of communication preacher uses in exemplum: direct satire and tendentional description of ritua1. Speaking of the second one we expose the specific method, by which our preacher tries to change positive meaning of traditional ritual into the negative one. Therefore we c1aim that preacher wants to persuade his audience of absurdity inherent to use of some medical or magical...

Unpolitical portrait of Charles the Elder of Žerotín
Vilímcová, Zuzana ; Holý, Martin (referee) ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor)
This work deals with non-political aspects of the life of Charles the Elder of Žerotín, which is not so mapped in detail contrary of the political life. I try to restore Charles's personal and private life base on the huge amount of his correspondence. I am concerned with Charles roles of loving husband, worried father, a good friend and counsellor, a deeply believed Christian, constantly sick man and also the master of his lieges people. I try to find answers on what Charles was the father. Whether he liked all his wives. How the religious coercion works on him. How to cope with the iniquities of his dominions. Whether or not hesitated to help friends in need, and how he coped with his illness. I try to find answers to these questions and more in the Žerotín's letters and selected correspondence of persons from its surroundings. I illustrates the whole picture by comparing the findings of earlier historiography.
Henyk of Valdstein. A profile of a noble intellectual from the era preceding the battle of White mountain
Bažant, Petr ; Hojda, Zdeněk (referee) ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor)
For historians Prague during the rule of Rudolph II is one of the most attractive periods of Czech history. At the turu of the 16th and 17th centuries, the capital of the Czech kingdom had become an important metropolis. The presence of a secular head of the Christian world attracted foreign diplomats, rich merchants, skilled craftsmen and artists from alI over Europe. For the Czech aristocracy, Prague represented a political and social centre and they built magnificent palaces. Heightened demands in lifestyle stimulated by the imperial court surroundings lead to the acceptance of late Renaissance and Mannerist ideas. Although this related mainly to the wealthiest noblemen, it also concerued the less welI-off members of the nobility who kept reconstructing their country houses into Renaissance chateaus.
Education and upbringing of Bohemian and Moravian nobility (1500-1620)
