Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov. Personality, Work and Afterlife Abstract On the basis of archival sources and relevant secondary literature, the thesis explores the life of Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov, one of the best-known Czech historical figures of the latter half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. The work focuses on the social, political, economic, administrative, and religious circumstances in the royal city of Kutná Hora, with which Dačický's life was closely related. With a view to preserved period sources, it outlines and recapitulates the accessible information about the famous swashbuckler, rioter, ruffian, killer, and drunkard who was also a prolific chronicler, poet, an ardently religious armorial burgher with unswayable moral views, and an 'eyewitness to the Czech Renaissance'. The found facts are contrasted with the 'second life' (afterlife) of Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov which was provided for him by the novelists and dramatists of the 19th and 20th century. His character, and especially his temperament outraged the citizens of Kutná Hora and inspired many modern authors of plays and TV dramas, novels, film scripts, and musical works for the stage (operetta, opera, and musical). In the Track of Culture, Nature and Cognition. Foreign Journeys of Bohemian and Austrian Nobility in the Second Half of the 18th and at the Beginning of the 19th Centuries

This thesis deals with selected foreign journeys of Czech and Austrian nobility in the second half of the 18th and at the beginning 19th centuries and their influences and impacts. In addition to the general passages devoted to the travelling of nobility from the 16th to the middle of the 18th centuries and to the expeditions carried out during the period under review, attention is paid to five persons who have been divided into three groups based on their activities influenced by experience gained in foreign countries. The first of the circuits is connected with creating of landscape parks inspired by the ideas of 18th -century philosophy and expeditions to Great Britain and German territory, where the first picturesque gardens appeared. The relationship between travel and landscaping of the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries is illustrated by the example of Johann Rudolf Czernin of Chudenice and his parks in Krásný Dvůr, Jemčina, Chudenice and Petrohrad or Alois I. Cult of personality and children's reader. The image of communist functionaries in magazines for children from 1948 to 1955

(in English): This bachelor's thesis is focused on the manifestations of the cult of communist functionaries in Czechoslovakia between years 1948 and 1955, specifically on the cult of personality in children's magazines (Jiskry, Vlaštovička, Mateřídouška, Ohníček, Pionýr, Pionýrské noviny, Práce pionýrů). The thesis is namely about Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, Klement Gottwald, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Antonín Zápotocký and Zdeněk Nejedlý. The author used discourse analysis as a method. The research deals with the image of these individuals, with the facts of their lives that are presented as significant. The analysis points out attributes ascribed to these historical figures; there is sameness, but on the other hand there are also distinctions in the way of representing these politicians.

Albrecht von Wallenstein's dominions after 1618

This thesis deals with the gradual territorial development of dominions held by Albrecht von Wallenstein not only as a direct owner but also as a feudal lord. A significant part of attention of this thesis is focused on studying of the administrative development of the duchy of Friedland and its specific status within the Czech lands. As the starting point the year 1618 was chosen, when the Bohemian revolt started. Thanks to its defeat Wallenstein got most of his estates. This thesis investigates gains not only within Bohemia but also describes the episodic tenure of duchy of Mecklenburg and the Silesian principalities.

Spanish Embassy in Prague under don Baltasar De Zúñiga (1608-1617)

The present work is a contribution to the history of the Early modern diplomacy and early modern diplomatic practics. The subject of this work is the diplomatic misson of Baltasar de Zúñiga at imerial court (1608-1617). The study focuses on description of embassy functioning based on an analyses of official documents produced by the embassy itself, which were in several instances complemented by some of the documents produced by the Spanish governmental bureucracy such as, instructions, credentials, consultas or correspondence addressed to the hands of ambassador Baltasar de Zúñiga. As such, the present study is a kind of introspection, because it shows the functioning of a diplomatic mission from inside. The aim is to aswer the following questions. What part of the day-to-day work of a specific embassy could be seen, and controled by a sending government. How the chosen sources represent the basis of the Spanish policy in the Holy Roman Empire, the instruments used to increase the reputation of the Spanish king and the reputation of the ambassaror himself.

Life after Life. The Revenants in the Early Modern Period Bohemia Lands.

The master's thesis deals with one of the specifics of the cultural history of the Czech lands in the Early Modern period - i. e. the general perception of the afterlife (approximately between 1500 and 1800) and revenant issues. A revenant is meant originally a human being, who, after his death, for various reasons returns to the light of the living world, with exhibits of material (revived corpses, zombies, vampires, fexts) and immaterial (spirits, white ladies, wild hunting). In this respect, the main source are Czech demonological legends. One part of the study is to evaluate the social, religious and cultural aspects that had effect on what was said above in the specific historical period. The main emphasis is placed on the individual cases of revenants in the Czech lands, preserved in historical sources, as well as comparison with the same case in other European countries. The study will also focus on the description of biographies of historical personalities, drawing conclusions about what may have caused the conviction of being revenant.

Mortal Prague. Funeral culture of the early-modern period using Prague as an example.

Considering the extensiveness of thematter, the scope has been limited to the area of Prague, to the cultural sphere of secular nobility and to the time period between the years 1500 and 1700. Naturally, the timeframe is not and cannot be absolute given the nature of this subject matter, which is culture. In the introductory chapter, the paper seeks to clarify eschatology and religious conditions in the early modern period, depicting death and its grip in the 16th and 17th centuries. Each chapter is devoted to a specific phenomenon of the funeral culture, in the same order in which the succession should logically follow shortly before and after the death of an important person. As such, the thesis specifically discusses the doctrine of "good death" - so called ars moriendi, exhibitions of the body, the funeral procession, construction of the Castrum Doloris, funeral sermons, and provision of funeral monuments. Middle European Military Camps in 1550-1650

The subject of this thesis is the problematics of the military camps of Christian armies in the Central Europe between 1550-1650. We focus on the camps of the Habsburg Monarchy and German lands, yet some space is given to the situation in Poland and Hungary. The introductory chapters consist of a characterization of the source material and an overview of the present state of research. Furthermore, excursuses into several topics related to the military camps of the early modern period are made. Thus, characterizations of the crucial war conflicts of the period, contemporary strategies and tactics, principals, composition and equipment of the armies, of the ranks, and of the life of soldiers are provided. The core of this work is an interpretation and comparison of treatises written by military theorists, who dealt with the problematics of camps, namely of the works by Jan Tarnowski, Guillaume du Bellay, Leonhardt Fronsperger, Lazarus von Schwendi, Giorgio Basta, Johann Jacobi von Wallhausen, and Raimondo Montecuccoli. Additionally, an analysis of the military orders of the Roman emperor Maximilian II and of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf is supplied, followed by memoirs and diaries of soldiers of that era, and contemporary literary fiction. The Rites of Passage at the courts of last Rosenbergs

Abstract. This work provides a view of the most important rites of passage at the courts of the last male members of Rosenberg family. Special attention is given to their rituals of the marriages, baptisms and funerals. These rituals and festivities associated with it were the major events of the social, spiritual, economic and political life. For baptisms and funerals their spiritual dimension is emphasized, in case of marriages their social and economic aspects seem more important. The work brings closer insight into many areas of the life of the highest Czech aristocracy at that time. Philippine Welser between Czech-language and German-language historical Memory

This bachelor thesis deals with the life story of Philippine Welser (1527-1580), the ignoble wife of Ferdinand II., Archduke of Austria (1529-1595), as a subject for literary, theatrical and visual inspiration. The thesis draws on sources dating from the 16th century to the present and it also maps how castle and chateau expositions treat the topic. The methodology is based on the Czech tradition of exploration of Second Life. Comparison of sources of linguistically Czech and German-speaking environments yielded findings that these two traditions differ, each emphasizes a different part of life of Philippine Welser while both cope with aspects that the Czech National Revival, as well as the disintegration of the Austrian monarchy and development in the twentieth century brought.
