Functions of professional scientific discourse

This thesis investigates the parameters of professional discourse in the field of information technology. It aims to explore the linguistic features and functions of discourse in technical and popular scientific texts, and to compare and contrast them. The materials under investigation include technical and popular scientific texts on topics such as computer networks, algorithms, enzymes, and operating systems. The expected results of the study include a deeper understanding of the differences and similarities between technical and popular scientific texts in terms of their linguistic features and discourse functions, as well as insights into the professional context in which these texts are produced and consumed. By shedding light on the distinctive characteristics of professional discourse in the field of information technology, this study aims to contribute to the development of effective communication practices in this important and rapidly evolving field. Through a comprehensive review of relevant literature, this thesis shows that professional discourse in science and technology serves a range of functions, including conveying technical information, persuading others of scientific arguments, and promoting collaboration and innovation within scientific communities. The linguistic features and language strategies used in this discourse help to achieve these functions by providing precise, technical language that is often inaccessible to non-experts but critical for conveying complex scientific concepts accurately. The speech acts used in professional discourse in science and technology vary based on the intended audience and purpose, with communicative acts such as informing, explaining, and persuading being particularly important. Finally, the thesis illustrates how pragmatic contexts, such as social and cultural factors, can significantly impact the production and interpretation of professional discourse in science and technology. Overall, this thesis aims to deepen our understanding of professional discourse in science and technology and its critical role in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.

Henri Beyle jako veřejný intelektuál

Označení veřejný intelektuál se pro angažovanost spisovatelů a dalších osobností ve Francii používá od konce 19. století. Tento koncept zapojování se do veřejné debaty s cílem ovlivnit veřejné mínění se však objevuje už dříve. V první polovině 19. století byl aktivní francouzský spisovatel Henri Beyle, známý pod pseudonymem Stendhal. Beylova angažovanost v kulturní a politické sféře byla na svoji dobu výjimečná, protože aktivní role spisovatele ve společnosti se teprve ustanovovala. Dají se u něj vysledovat podobné charakteristiky, které definují intelektuály jako Émile Zola, jako jsou například veřejná angažovanost, liberální přesvědčení či kladný postoj k demokracii. Tato práce rozvíjí základní hypotézu, že se na Henriho Beyla dá pohlížet jako na předchůdce veřejného intelektuála. Záměrem je prozkoumat Beylova díla a činnost a podpořit tuto hypotézu konkrétními důkazy. V teoretické části práce je představen koncept francouzského intelektuála a kritéria, která ho definují. V analytické části jsou následně tato kritéria aplikovaná na roli Henriho Beyla s cílem zjistit, do jaké míry zapadá jeho angažovanost do představy veřejného intelektuála, jak se chápe od konce 19. století.
