On Some significant aspects of growing L1 communicative competence

The main purpose of the thesis was to investigate the role of the age factor in discourse and to observe some significant aspects of the growing LI communicative competence in children. The analysis was based on a corpus consisting of audio recordings of adult-child interactions in the primary school environment. The interactions involved pupils of different ages and their teachers. The children formed three age groups according to their grade. They were pupils of the first, third and fifth grade; that is to say they were mostly seven, nine and eleven years old. The recording took place in Barnes Elementary School in Beaverton, Oregon, USA, during two weeks in May, 2006. Although the school staff was very helpful and open to the project, there were factors that made it rather complicated (see also 1.3). Firstly, the time period of two weeks was a short time to obtain enough material for a large-scale research project. Moreover, the school schedule included many activities such as field trips or theatre performances, which even further reduced the time aimed for recording. Secondly, the school was a noisy place, which caused certain passages of the recordings to be unintelligible. Teaching English Pronunciation in Contemporary Czech and British Textbooks

Cílem této práce je zjistit, do jaké míry jsou současné běžně užívané učebnice angličtiny pro střední školy vyučujícím nápomocny při výuce výslovnosti a zda se v tomto ohledu vzájemně odlišují učebnice vydané českými a britskými nakladatelstvími. Teoretická část se věnuje historickému vývoji výuky výslovnosti v rámci devíti významných metod výuky cizího jazyka, jejím vyústěním je pak stručný popis současných tendencí ve výuce výslovnosti. Praktická část představuje a komentuje výsledky kvalitativní, kvantitativní a metodologické analýzy vybraného souboru čtyř českých a čtyř britských učebnic a srovnává způsob, jakým je v jednotlivých učebnicích výslovnost prezentována.

Pronunciation of Czech Teachers of English: Focus on Wofrd- Stress

Tématem této práce je popsat výslovnost českých učitelů angličtiny se zaměřením na anglický slovní přízvuk a z něj plynoucí redukci samohlásek. V úvodu jsou představeny dvě hypotézy. První tvrdí, že učitelé s pedagogickým vzděláním zaměřeným na angličtinu mají lepší výslovnost. Druhá zastává názor, že učitelé z prestižnějších škol mají také lepší výslovnost. Teoretická část se zaobírá teorií slovního přízvuku a vysvětluje jeho oprávněnost v kontextu výuky angličtiny. Praktická část analyzuje autentické nahrávky českých učitelů angličtiny a je zaměřena na správné umístění slovního přízvuku a redukci samohlásek. Metodologická část konečně nabízí různé metody pro odstranění tohoto problému.

Reflection of old-Germanic Legends and Myths in the Works of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (With the Focus on The Silmarillion and Edda)

This diploma thesis deals with the reflection of the old-Germanic myths and legends in the work of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, focusing mainly on The Simarillion and the Icelandic saga Poetic and Prose Edda. It does not aspire to be a complete listing and description of all the oldGermanic myths and legends Tolkien was inspired by and used them in his works. It should provide an outline of the most significant and striking similarities and parallels in these books. For this purpose I have cited many extracts from the texts. In the beginning of this thesis I have also attempted to draw an outline of Tolkien's life and his sources of inspiration. For a better insight into the issue I have included a chapter on some of the most important myths of non-Germanic origin.

Rhoticity in Czech students and graduates' English

This diploma thesis will provide a description of the M phoneme from articulatory, acoustic-auditory, and phonological point of view. The structure of the theoretical background will be that of a comparative study of the /r/ phoneme in the English and Czech language. In the research part, rhoticity will be examined in practice in graduates and students of English language and literature at the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague.
