The fight against terrorism at a national and international level
HOLUB, Michal
Terrorism is a modern and constantly developing problem which has been threatening and noticeably affecting the protected interests and built-up values of states. Terrorist groups strive to spread fear, violence, opinions, and ideas to reach their goals through attacks on the population. Today, even countries that have not faced this threat yet, are confronted with this problem. Modern trends and new technologies along with the migration crisis cause that we face this threat in our homes more than ever before. The upraise of The Islamic State can be considered as a phenomenon of today, which has infected practically whole world and gives a space to various individuals to commit terrorist attacks under the auspices of this organization, or just provides instructions on committing such acts for any reason and with different aims. It is necessary to respond adequately to this threat, and it is necessary not to remain only with regret after every terrorist attack. It is essential to monitor the latest trends in terrorist attacks same as fighting against them, which in consequence will help us to set up operational procedures how to deal with these kind of incidences. There is also a need for a strong political spectrum which understands that these measures will never be profitable or popular, however its necessary it keeps supporting them.
Correlation analysis of the relationship of oil price development and frequency of terrorist attacks in Europe
ORTHOVÁ, Nikola
The threat of terrorist attacks in Europe is a very topical issue that greatly affects all of Europe's population, their trust in the European Community, especially the economy, both nationally and globally. One of the most prominent economic indicators is the price of oil and petroleum products, from which the price of fuel depends on the price of fuel. The price of fuel is the price of most products and services. Thus, the overall living standard of the population and the value of money as a whole. But it would be a mistake to think that terrorism is the only element that affects the price of oil. The purpose of terrorist attacks is primarily to intimidate the population through violence or the threat of violence for the purpose of their religious, political or other goals. In order for the term terrorism to be better grasped, it is necessary to define it with regard to other types of combat. Also define some related concepts, such as a terrorist group. In addition, there is a small list of terrorist organizations operating in Europe. And also an overview of selected terrorist attacks in Europe, their brief description. The handling of all terrorist attacks in Europe would mean more than 8,000 incidents, so only the most serious ones, as well as those with some special facts, have been described. The aim of this work was to demonstrate that terrorism has an impact on economic indicators. This was accomplished through statistical analyzes
Selected hazardous chemical substances and their misuse
MARKOVÁ, Markéta
This bachelor thesis is focused on issues of abusing of hazardous chemicals to the mass threat to the population. In the theoretical part the issue of terrorism was analyzed taking into account the current development trend in this area - vehicle-ramming attacks. Furthermore, the area of transportation of dangerous substances is outlined along with the selected legislation and the characteristic of selected chemical substances. In the practical part, a list of dangerous chemcials has been compiled, which were subsequently evaluated by the method of significant valuation of individual criteria. The criteria were selected with regard to possible consequences of a terrerist attack or a chemical accident. The aim of the bachelor thesis was to evaluate the possibility of misuse of dangerous industrial substances to the mass threat of the population. Based on obtained results we can say that the execution of the attack is real. This is due to the low availability of substances by reason of transport of substantial amount of chemicals, the low financial cost of the attack and the minimum requirements for attacker´s expertise. The thesis offers a relatively comprehensive view of the issue.
Terrorism and its criminal aspects
Kořínek, Štěpán ; Jelínek, Jiří (advisor) ; Pelc, Vladimír (referee)
Resume The title of this rigorous thesis is Terrorism and its Criminal Aspects. The thesis is divided into four chapters, whereupon each chapter is telling about the phenomenon of terrorism in a different way. The first chapter focuses on the basis of terrorism and theoretical definitions of terrorism. It also contains historical views on universal theoretically doctrinal definitions of terrorism. It follows the components of the definitions of terrorism and its causes and consequences. This part also contains the classification of terrorism called typology. The second chapter will discuss the codification of terrorism in the field of criminal law in Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. There is an analysis of valid and efficient Czech and Slovak criminal codex, which contains a crime ,,teroristický útok'' and ,,terorizmus''. It also presents other criminal activities like cybercrime, economic crime, and violent crime. Especially cybercrime, also known as cyber criminality, entails a novum in criminal jurisprudence. Next part of this chapter is focused on selected instruments of criminal law to fight against terrorism like European arrest warrant, terrorist custody, European evidence order and others. Of course, it was unimaginable, hence impossible, to forget a sphere of international law and its relation...
Representation of Mass Death in MF DNES
Strnadová, Kristýna ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
This diploma thesis focus on a media representation of a mass death which is caused by terrorist attacks. Due to terrorist attacks around the whole world many innocent people die and media write about these affairs in many ways depending on different factors. By combining quantitative and qualitative analysis of six cases of terrorist attacks which took place in different world locations, thus thesis shows how are these events represented in daily newspaper Mladá Fronta DNES. On the one hand, the number of victims appear to be less significatnt factor, on the other hand, the geographic proximity and possible connection to the Czech Republic plays bigger role. Thus, more space is devoted to these attacks. Each event also appear to be framed differently according to the time when they took place. Either, they were framed as attacks against humanity with focus on heroism of the victims, or they were framed as geopolitical conflicts with attention to the consequences and political responses. It is also possible to find narratives which repeat in the articles about terrorist attacks. These narratives use archetypal stories which can be found in acient myths. The usage of these stories helps not only journalists, who do not have to invent their very own stories, but also readers because it helps them to...
The Influence of Cyber Terrorism Threat on the American Security Policy
Rezek, Tomáš ; Calda, Miloš (advisor) ; Mareš, Miroslav (referee) ; Cabada, Ladislav (referee) ; Polčák, Radim (referee)
(English) The aim of this dissertation is to answer the question of whether the U.S. security policy is influenced by the threat of cyber terrorism. The dissertation is divided into chapters that can be regarded as steps in a logical reasoning process. In the first chapter, cyber space is introduced and described to illustrate its importance and complexity. The next chapter analytically compares various definitions of terrorism, and partially rejects the initial hypothesis that cyber terrorism is not included in the general definition of terrorism. The following chapter statistically analyzes the available data on terrorist groups and terrorist attacks to empirically confirm the hypothesis that terrorism is still a real threat to American security. The analysis actually proves that the threat of terrorism has not decreased in relation to the number of terrorist groups. It also shows that the number of terrorist attacks against the U.S. targets has significantly decreased in the United States, while terrorist actions have been increasing constantly on a global level. The analysis shows that the success rate of terrorists attacks does not form a time series, and therefore each terrorist attack has to be examined individually to assess its success probability. The following analysis reviews the...
Development and operation of terorist groups with regard to the situation after 2001
LIŠKA, Jaroslav
Terrorism is a very complex and ever developing phenomenon, which can be construed as systematic use of organised violence against uninvolved persons for the purpose of achieving political, criminal or other goals. The struggle against it is very complicated, but necessary. Currently, many people especially connect this term with the Islamic religion. Islamic radicals justify the performed terrorist attacks by an extreme perception of the holy book of Quran and proclaim themselves as holy fighters for freedom. However, recent years have shown that terrorism has spread throughout the world and now with the mass migration represents one of the largest threats for today's society. Terrorism develops as fast as our society and prides itself with the ever growing popularity with sponsors of various kinds with different interests, who with their considerable not only financial support allow the terrorist groups to commit more and more sophisticated and destructive attacks. From the perspective of the CR it can be said that our state can fortunately be considered relatively safe, unlike other member countries of the EU. However, it is necessary to take into account the participation of the CR in the international antiterrorist operations, which without question make the CR a potential target of a possible terrorist attack. However, the participation in these missions is necessary. The currently largest terrorist group Islamic State included the Czech Republic in its list of the "crusade coalition" at the end of 2015, where all enemies of this "pseudo-state". The theoretical part of the thesis on the topic of the Development and action of terrorist groups with regard to the situation after 2001 especially deals with the issues of Islamic terrorist groups. In the introduction of the thesis, the fundamental terms of the issues in question, such as terrorism, Islam, jihad, Islamism, Islamic fundamentalism. The second part of the theoretical part of the thesis deals with terrorist organisations. Due to the current safety situation, the main attention was attached to the development and activity of major terrorist groups, that is Hezbollah, Hamas, and of course Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. These selected terrorist organisations are elucidated in the theses as much as possible, including their leaders. Subsequently, further selected terrorist organisations are linked to these terrorist groups, namely Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya, Palestine Islamic Jihad, and Taliban. In the initial chapter of the research part of the thesis, a research question is stated, which has been determined as follows: "What is the threat of a terrorist attack in the territory of the Czech Republic?", which directly follows the goal of the thesis, which was stipulated as: "Assessment of the threat of a terrorist attack in the territory of the Czech Republic depending on the development of the terrorist groups." Furthermore, the research methodology is stated. In the following chapter of the research part with the title "Results", the reader first familiarises himself with the largest terrorist attacks so far, which have taken place in the USA, on 11 September 2001 and were a turning point in the history of terrorism. The last pages of this part of the thesis contemplate the attacks of Islamic radicals and the situation in the West after 11 September 2001. The middle part of this chapter familiarises the reader with the threats of terrorism for the CR with an accent on Islamic terrorism. Attention is also paid to the Muslim community living in the CR and EU as a potential risk factor of a possible attack. The last part of this chapter of the thesis states semi-structured interviews, which were conducted with leading experts in the issues of terrorism. In the final chapter with the title "Discussion", an analysis of the examined areas is performed. In the conclusion of the thesis, the research question and the thesis objective are answered.
Safety of a Commercial Aircraft after Damage to Airframe due to Terrorist Attack
Lošťák, Miroslav ; Petrásek, Miloslav (advisor)
Modern-day terrorist attacks present a considerable danger for commercial aircrafts. This thesis analyzes potential methods of such attacks with a critical analysis of the most dangerous type: an attack from the outside of the aircraft via a fragmentation missile warhead. Such missiles cause damage to the airframe of the aircraft through fragments created by the explosion. In this thesis, analytical geometry is used to determine the area of the aircraft affected by the fragmentation. The aircraft’s geometry and the fragments’ dispersion are calculated by analytical functions, and the effect of the damage is analyzed. A shooting experiment was also carried out, in which fragments were shot at a reinforced skin panel that was manufactured according to the real design of commercial aircraft. The results of the experiment revealed that only directly hit sections of the structure are damaged. Data obtained by the experiment was then used for the creation and improvement of the model used in the simulation by means of the finite element method. This model is used for the numerical calculation of the damage sustained. Further included in the thesis is an analysis of the change in the load-bearing capacity after such an attack. The relationship between the size of the damage and its effect on the load-bearing capacity of the component as well as the entire structure is defined. First, the effect of component damage is analyzed via the FMEA/FMECA methods. This analysis is then extended using fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic analysis is based on the determination of the size of the damaged component area and the component’s importance on the structure’s carry loads. Application of the defined approach is described for several parts of an aircraft’s life cycle, including development, operation after the terrorist attack, and assessment of causes after a crash caused by a fragmentation missile warhead.
