Conjunctural Bratislava
Sokol, Daniel ; Dostál, Petr (advisor) ; Korec, Pavol (referee)
Conjunctural Bratislava is regional study which emphasises the topic of identity and social features of the city and its impact on the physical infrastucture and organisation of the city. First theoretical part introduces the Theory of conjunctural city based on connection between hierarchy and dynamic development in broad sense. Second part provides the systematic view of Bratislava, explaining some aspects of the theory (population, economy, urbanism, transportation, culture). Short chapter is dedicated to current conceptual ideas of Bratislava in terms of a city and a region, too. The last part of the study brings a brief prognostic view of main prospects of the city and some possible problems which may occure soon or later. Empirical study in appendix is aimed to Bratislava's hiphop culture and its musical production. I analysed three local hip hop songs. Bratislava has been chosen for its uniqueness, being one of the very few remaining conjunctural cities in Europe.

Conjunctural Bratislava is complex regional study which emphasises the topic of identity and social features of the city and its impact on the physical infrastucture and organisation of the city. The last part of the study brings a brief prognostic view of main prospects of the city and some possible problems which may occure soon or later. Empirical study in appendix is aimed to Bratislava's hiphop culture and its musical production. I have chosen four songs for the analysis (three local ones and one from Prague hip hop group PSH). City, Sea, Chicken, Building - Theoretical Framework and Contents of Teachingin the Seminar “Modern Theories of Development and Urban Planning”
Březovská, Markéta
City, sea, chicken, house. Can we teach the modern theory of urbanism according to established rules and patterns? As we do it with noun declension neuter? Shouldn’t we rather reflect contemporary practices and new emerging tendencies? My paper describes a new seminar initiated by the Ústav navrhování V, taught in the winter term of 2011/1012 by my colleague Jan Kristek and myself and under the supervision of Karel Havliš. The seminar Modern Development and Theories of Urbanism carried a subtitle City: Growth, Ideology, Power and Violence. Its objective was to acquaint students with the theory of our field, the relations between cities and technology, economy and politics, with various approaches to urban planning, ideologies, urban growth and problems of cities since the first industrial revolution until today. Part of the course was a reflection of the interdisciplinary discourse - students had to read, understand and represent texts written by experts of different professional backgrounds, all dealing with cities: sociology, economics, geography, philosophy, urban anthropology or cultural ethnography. We aimed to teach students to think critically, argue correctly, and independently express their opinion in matters of urban planning theory, regardless of established patterns. My paper explains the theoretical framework of the seminar, its concrete content and affects on the processing of myown dissertation. My colleague Jan Kristek elaborates the methodology.

Reflections on the Global Order after the End of the Cold War: the Perspective of Francis Fukuyama and Samuel P. Huntington
Jurásek, Miroslav ; Veselý, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Lehmannová, Zuzana (referee) ; Vlček, Dalibor (referee) ; Gombár, Eduard (referee)
The times coming with the End of the Cold War were very turbulent. Politicians had to take into the consideration lots of scenarios and the next global trends to make correct decisions. Most of the very numerous visions of the future global order followed more or less the twofold pattern: order or anarchy. "The End of History and the Last Man" and "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order" written by two prominent American political scientists Francis Fukuyama and Samuel P. Huntington and published at the beginning of the 90s are the most representative works that fit into this pattern. These provocative and controversial theories have been criticized and empirically challenged by many on one side, on the other side it hasn't impeded others to use them as a starting point for their next analyses. This dissertation thesis is a contribution to the debate between the dissenters and the supporters of these theories from a predictive point of view. Through the research theoretical methodology it is argued that the examined theories are still valid even nowadays because their theoretical essence (or hard core in the Lakatosian research program) has not been refuted yet. Nevertheless, the hard core of the theories determines their very specific character which puts forward the importance of the factors labelled in the Lakatosian framework as an external history of a science. These factors organized according to the Mehtas criteria of so called strong idea are, especially in the social sciences, decisive for how a theoretical construct is accepted in a broader non-academic context. It is demonstrated that both theories fulfill all criteria to be very influential in practice, although the idea of clash of civilizations is even more powerful in this respect. The specific features of all theories are illustrated on two case studies: Union of South American Nations and Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Firstly, the selection of these case studies is justified and secondly, the anomalies in terms of the Lakatosian methodology are identified and then explained. There have been found no unexplainable anomalies, which practically confirms the validity of both research programs on one side, on the other side it facilitates a better assessment of the studied theories in a sense of their interpretative scope and possibilities.
