A doctoral thesis “Czechoslovakian modernist illustration of the 1950s and 1960s and its influences in the contemporary Czech visual culture” is focused on how a modernist illustration of the 1950s and 1960s influences Czech contemporary authors, especially illustrators. We can witness a particularly strong influence of the above mentioned modernist illustration and visual culture of that period in general among producers employing digital tools and vector graphics served. The thesis contains a historical study which follows developments of the visual language of graphic arts (illustration in particular) in the 1950s and 1960s in relation to fine arts. There is a special focus on a position of the 1960s’ modernist illustration within the applied arts of the period. Biographical study dedicated to illustrator M. Šašek introduce key figure of the (late) modernist period.
From the other side of the Atlantic: Witold Gombrowicz in Argentina and his dialogue with the (Polish) culture
Kanda, Roman
For the literary work of the Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969), distinct thematical-motivic coherence and compactness of thinking is characteristic. A conflict between creative individuality (creative „self “) and limiting form of culture (cultural „us“) is among the lines that permeate all his work, and especially his Diaries (written between 1953 and 1967, or rather 1969) most visibly. Gombrowicz’s radical anti-culturalism, accompanied with numerous scandals and provocations, must be seen as a consistent defence of his creative freedom, his subjectivity. Nevertheless, it also represents an alternative view of culture, revealing its so far hidden aspects (immatureness, clownish laughter, youth) as distinctive values.

The issue of scientists in exile has been of interest primarily due to the large wave of emigration which ensued in Europe in the face of the Nazi regime. However, other waves of emigration and exile in 20th century Europe, such as those evoked by European and non-European authoritarian regimes and dictatorships or other malignant political developments, have so far escaped more detailed attention. The paper focuses on the main characteristic features of the emigration of scientists and intellectuals in the period of the communist regime and presents the results of an analysis of departure of the workers of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to exile. It tries to estimate the overall extent of this emigration, deliberates about the further careers of exile scholars and introduces an attempt of exile typology.
