Camill Hoffmann. A biography

Résumé This thesis aims to describe the life and work of the poet, translator, journalist and Czechoslovak diplomat Camill Hoffmann. Hoffmann was born to a Jewish family in Kolin, his mother tongue was German but he also spoke Czech well. He attended a grammar school in Prague where he soon became a member of a poet's society publishing in the journal Jaro (Spring) which was issued by Paul Leppin. "Spring generation", as they were later called after the journal, is counted to the neoromantics. At the beginning of the 20th century, Hoffmann leaves for Vienna where he begins to work as a journalist for the daily Zeit. There he makes friends with Stefan Zweig, together they translate Baudelaire's poetry book Flowers of Evil. While writing for the culture department of the Zeit, he has close contacts to writers from central Europe, to Arthur Schnitzler, Marie Ebner von Eschenbach or Detlev von Lilliencron. Recommended by Max Brod, Hoffmann also published a poem of Franz Werfel, by that time an unknown author. In 1912, Hoffmann moves to Dresden where he works as a culture section chief-editor of the daily Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten. Ernst Sommer and a Carlsbad Attempt of Czech-German Reconsiliation in Czechoslovakia after 1918

This paper examines the following texts: Sprachenhass, Hakenkreuz, Die Verständigung and Die Templer, all written by Ernst Sommer in the 20's and 30's in Carlsbad. This region became in the 30's notorious for Hitler's support and attempts to destroy the Czechoslovak Republic. That is why we inquire into the origin and character of these texts written in German that aimed at settlement of national issues and reconciliation of Czech and German speaking population in the frame of the Czechslovak Republic. The texts are set into historical and regional background that shows clearly the difficulties of this period dooming all Sommer's activities to fail. Female Characters in the Prose Works Written by Helga Königsdorf

This diploma thesis focuses on the personality, life and work of German author Helga Königsdorf and the analysis of selected prosaic works. The aim of the first part is to provide a well-arranged and comprehensive set of biographical information about this author with an emphasis on her literary career, work and socio-political context. The second part is devoted to the study of selected prosaic texts with an emphasis on providing the detailed analysis of female characters. The aim of this part is to provide an overview of topics and standpoints related to the status of women in the society at that time. The analysed female characters deal with topics such as women's position in science at that time or problems in partner, family or professional relationships related to women's emancipation. The conclusion of the thesis offers a brief summary and comparison of differences and similarities considering the personalities, opinions and priorities of these female characters. Unfulfilled Desires in the Story Collection Lettipark by Judith Hermann

This diploma thesis focuses on thematic interpretation of the short stories collection Lettipark by Judith Hermann, which was released in 2016 in German language. The Czech translation was published in 2018. Within individual interpretations never realized images, expectations and dreams will be accented. They may be regarded as unfulfilled desires of the main characters of the short stories. One part of this diploma thesis also includes the categorization of the author into German literature since the middle 90's of the last century until today.
