Discourse analysis of childbirth in the Czech media

Choice of location and proces sof giving birth in czech environment remains very limited and domestic deliveries are subject of controversy among professional medical community and state institutions on the one hand and midwives, civil movements and comitted mothers on the other hand. Theme divides laical and expert public. It's established through discourses, reflect the views and opinions of the two quarreled groups - supporters of medically controlled childbirth and supporters of natural birth. In the context of media reporting can be identified two main streams of discursive formations, scattering of concepts, thematic choices, objels and modalities of coming to the statement - medical discourse and natural discourse. Anthropological perception of current home births without medical assistance.

The study discusses the current home births in developed countries. Introduction deals with the emergence of a model of human birth in the background of evolutionary mechanisms and the resulting biological risks, which are illustrated by data on maternal and neonatal mortality. Home births are understood in the complex scale, and so formation of current model of obstetrics in selected countries is shown in historical background. It brings most common image of women and the circumstances that lead to the choice of home birth. The study focuses on the comparison of home and hospital births due to the occurrence of undesirable health complications. As this comparison showed the results that births are largely influenced by medical interventions carried out, frequency of these procedures is also compared. Higher occurrence of interventions in hospital births can be partly explained by changes in the demographic profile of mother, which increases the risks associated with childbirth at home. Data processed in the study suggest that today's home births require extensive implementation of system changes, and therefore the home birth as a safe alternative is not recommended. This thesis deals with framing of homebirths in the Czech Republic. It is focused on the interpretation of homebirths in the Czech mass and alternative media. The goal of this paper is find out what kind of discourse dominate about homebirths in public discussion, against which attitude to childbirth it is in conflict and if this interpretation correspond with "real" practise of homebirths. I used discourse analysis for uncover discourses in Czech media and the in-depth interview with mothers for detecting the process, risks and experience of homebirth (was compared with the experience of childbirths in hospital). The secondary goal of the thesis is to discover how much are reflected the people involved in this issue. Theoretically, the paper is based on framing theory and the concept of human rights. The sources of analysis are composed of the Czech media articles (2014-2017) and the statements of mothers interviewed.

Homebirth: intimate partners' perspectives

This bachelor thesis addresses the topic of a planned home-birth from the perspective of the father of the child and investigates his role in the decision-making concerning the birth place and the birth itself. The experience of the man is examined in the context of the whole couple. The thesis is based on qualitative research which examines the above-mentioned topics in the Czech context using semi-structured interviews with women who gave birth at home and their partners. The empirical chapters represent the results of the thematic analysis and their interpretation, supported by relevant literature. The thematic categories that frame the respondents' statements are three: decision-making process, presence at birth and the presence of the father from the mother's point of view. The study indicates that men are often not fully integrated into the decision-making process itself. The reasons for the low level of integration of men into the decision-making process can be found on the part of both women and men. The work presents which factors might determine the male experience with home birth, as well as which circumstances might affect the degree of involvement in childbirth itself. Home delivery - Czech reflection discussion

Periodicals are the topic a home birth engaged only in certain time waves, about whether a home birth is permissible or not. The views of the general public are greatly influenced by the media that report on these events. The professional public provides expert opinions on home birth. These views are supported by relevant research. And that's why the medical opinion carries a great weight for the view on this whole topic. In my bachelor thesis, I have dealt with home birth, as reflected in newspapers. In the theoretical part, I focused on defining the terms and the legislation associated with home birth, as midwife, doula, birth plan and others. I provided detailed history on the procedure of transfer of women from the home environment to the medical environment. I also explained the applicable laws relating to midwives and newborns. The aim of my thesis was to map the interest of press in the home birth. The reflections are associated with events in this issue. I also examined the reactions and opinions of journalists, lay and professional public. An integral part of this research was to monitor the trends and shifts in this debate. I used the qualitative research strategy in the form of analysis of printed documents in my thesis. The research group was based on the three most widely read journals - Lidove noviny, MF Dnes and Právo, and the three most read newsweeklies - Reflex, Respekt and Týden. The research cohorts were selected according to the readership criteria based on the data from the Publishers' Union from 2013. I identified two seasons for my research. The first one was the period from 1990 to 2012 for Mladá fronta Dnes. I performed a retrospective analysis of development in these data to explore the media interest in home birth over a longer period of time. The second period (for all media) was between January 1, 2013 and June 30, 2015. A deeper analysis of the articles was performed for a shorter period of time. The research showed that periodicals are not interested in home birth. It turned out that the discussion was based on an event. Mostly, it was a negative event. The highest increase in frequency of articles was found in the events associated with the judiciary and in the events associated with the death or adverse developments in home birth. The discussion is the last part of this thesis. The results are compared with the literature used in the theoretical part. In conclusion, I present a summary of my research and suggestions for solutions.

Homebirth as Actor-Network: Multiple realities The topic of this medical anthropology thesis is a description of homebirth seen through the eyes of Actor-Network Theory. The focus of this work is thus not on the professional concept of homebirth as a biological process or soon-to-be-mothers experience and take on homebirth. Focus is on homebirth in itself, how it is enacted in practice. After the presentation of two points of view on medicine (disease and illness), an introduction into the basic principles and innovations of ANT (including anthropology of symmetry) and works of people, who build their ideas on it (Mol - multiplicity, De Laet - fluidity, Law), the thesis shifts its focus to the description of the whole actor- network, which enacts homebirth via interaction between the actors in practice. These practices are abstracted from the interviews with mothers, a dula and a paediatrician. The description includes people and objects, because according to ANT, they have the same amount of social agency. Homebirth is then enacted by the objects needed for homebirth - tools to make birth easier and to support its process, by people who partake, venues it takes place and the birthing positions it brings.
