Title: Image of Austrian Society in the time of National Socialism: a Thematic Analysis of the Novel All our Games by Erika Mitterer Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the work of the Austrian author Erika Mitterer and her experience with the ideology of the Third Reich. In the first part, I present the life and activities of the author, while putting a special emphasis on the period of National Socialism. The second part deals with the general characteristics of Mitterer's literary production. The main part of the thesis is the analysis of the novel All our Games, in which Mitterer tries to achieve a qualitative image of Austrian society during the Nazi regime. This picture is drawn by the Author using the example of a life of a fictive family. A general picture of the novel's time is constructed on the basis of the motives that are found in the book. The Influence of Nazi propagandy on Olympic Games in 1936

This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of Nazi propaganda on the Olympic Games in 1936. It describes the preparation and organization of the Winter Olympic Games in Garmisch- Partenkirchen and the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. The main goal of the thesis is to find out whether the regime of the organizing country influenced the course of such an important sporting event and possibly to what extent. The Nazis were originally opposed to the idea of hosting the Olympic Games, but eventually came to the conclusion that this was a unique opportunity to present the Third Reich in the best light and gain the favour of world opinion and depict a positive image of Germany. After Adolf Hitler came to power, over time, sport was identified as one of the priorities of Nazi education, which was to strengthen and prepare the German youth for the future war. During this time, Jews were increasingly expelled from society and became second-class. Their fate in Germany provoked a wave of resentment abroad. Despite numerous boycotts of the Olympic Games, however, a record number of states and athletes took part in the Olympics in Germany. Mephisto: Novel of a Career. The Moralic Responsibility of an Artist. A Comparison between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens.

The work deals with the ambivalent relationship between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens. Former political and artistic colleagues and friends chose opposite paths during the time of National Socialism. The prior thrust in their relationship allowed Klaus Mann to process the person of Gustaf Gründgens in the time-critical novel Mephisto. On the one hand, Klaus Mann describes the path of a cultivated supporter of the regime, the talented opportunist and characterless careerist while the novel is also Klaus Mann's dealing with his past friend. The aim of my work is to compare the moral positions and development of the two artists during the Nazi-regime. The basis for this comparison is the novel Mephisto. Totalitarian tendencies of German colonial policies

The diploma thesis Totalitarian tendencies of German colonial policies deals with German colonial policies towards Africans in the period between 1884-1914. The main focus is placed on the characteristics and analysis of German native policy in the most important of German colonies - German South West Africa. This piece attempts to pinpoint the relationship between the colonizers and the colonized, to illustrate the racist prejudice of the Germans and to describe the impact of these ideas on the colonial reality. Furthermore, this work reflects upon the Herero war, with particular interest being paid to the German war strategy, and tries to identify the reasons behind its radicalization as well as to resolve the query concerning the genocidal intent. The totalitarianism section of this thesis explores the totalitarian aspects of German native policy in German South West Africa and their development following the Herero war. A comparison of German colonial policies towards the natives with colonial policies of the other major powers active on the African continent follows. The final chapter endeavours to answer the question regarding the continuity of German history and continuity between German colonialism and National Socialism.

Lexical and pragmatic aspects of the Völkischer Beobachter, the most important newspaper during the Second World War

The presented thesis examines lexical and pragmatic instruments used by the leading newspaper in Germany during the Second World War, the Völkischer Beobachter. The objective is to determine the importance of the choice of lexical and pragmatic instruments and the communication strategy applied to influence readers. The targeting of readers by the press is illustrated by descriptions of the political climate and specific historical events. The thesis links language, history and wartime politics. By drawing on academic literature, the author describes the historical context preceding the Second World War, focusing on political events and press bans. Selected key wartime events are linked to linguistic analysis. The National Socialist ideology, led by Adolf Hitler, assists in demonstrating the origins of the typical features of National Socialist language. The newspapers themselves, Völkischer Beobachter, and selected linguistic and pragmatic phenomena are also described. The selected examples were chosen on the basis of a search in the Völkischer Beobachter and subsequent analysis. The linguistic analysis consists of a lexicological classification into linguistic devices of emotionality, expressivity, metaphor, metonymy and idiomatic expressions. Hitler´s unknown helper. The case of Ilse Koch.

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of Ilse Koch, a woman who grew up in the time of National Socialism in Germany and actively took part in running the concentration camp Buchenwald during the Second World War. She became well-known mainly because of her sadism and cruel actions she inflicted on innocent captives in the camp. Their own testimonies are key parts of the thesis. The aspects clearly proving Koch was to blame are named, on the other hand, there are also pointed out testimonies which defend her. To the complete narrative also belongs a description of the historical context, a part of which is a role of women in National Socialism and brief information about the concentration camp Buchenwald. The thesis is concluded by the author's reflection based on gained knowledge.

The White Rose - a resistence group in the Third Reich

Diese Bachelorarbeit behandelt die Tätigkeit der Weißen Rose, einer deutschen, christlich motivierten Widerstandsgruppe, die in der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges aktiv war. Der theoretische Teil dieser Arbeit widmet sich der Entwicklung der beiden Hauptakteuren, Alexander Schmorell und Hans Scholl, und Beschreibung des Verlaufs der aktiven Widerstandstätigkeit der Weißen Rose. Der praktische Teil beinhaltet eine Analyse der Flugblätter, die das Hauptkommunikationsmittel dieser Widerstandsgruppierung darstellten. It also goes on to describe the specific resistance activities that the White Rose engaged in. The practical potion of the thesis includes an analysis of flyers, which represented the group's principle means of communication.
