Rituals associated with Marijuana Smoking
PAVLIŇÁKOVÁ, Lenka
As the popularity of cannabis in the Czech Republic is increasing, the need to gather more information about its users is also growing. So I decided to write a bachelor thesis about the phenomenon of marijuana use. The theoretical part is focused on the cannabis plant. The taxonomy and description of the plant is presented here as well as the active substances it contains. I also pointed out various ways of use of cannabis and symptoms of intoxication. Then the thesis focuses on the concept of ritual, specifically its definition, qualifications and functions. Everything is linked with cannabis use in history. The last two chapters deal with the ritual use of cannabis during time. While in history marijuana was only a matter of some classes of people (jazz musicians, hippies), today a large number of people regardless their social status or age smoke marijuana. The qualitative survey was used as a research method, which was conducted through narrative interviews accompanied by observation. Interviews were conducted with regular cannabis users and their aim was to identify the rituals associated with its use. The results were processed using techniques for creating clusters which constituted a total of five areas that meet the aspects of ritual behavior. These areas relate to first experiment with marijuana, marijuana preparations for use, number of people present during intoxication and the common places and time of use. All results of this thesis should serve the general public to understand better the issue of cannabis use.

I paid attention mainly to questions of characteristic, origin and spread of cannabis drugs. In this thesis I wanted to point out also positive effects of marijuana for human organism, what was the history of treatment before and how is marijuana used for medical purposes today. I also researched possible risks of the usage of cannabis drugs, what negative consequences can occur after prolonged and regular use of marijuana, for example how this drug affects lungs, psyche, how use of marijuana effects a fetus during pregnancy, if marijuana works as an initial drug toward the hard drugs addiction. In the practical part of my thesis the goal was to chart marijuana addiction at middle schools, the knowledge of pupils about addictive substance issues and consequences of their use. I wanted to find out where pupils meet marijuana most often, where they tried it for the first time, who gave it to them, what was their actual experience, how many of them begun to use marijuana regularly, where they take money for it or if they grow it themselves and if they tried as well as other kinds of drugs. In my thesis I also wanted to show a preventive program how primary prevention affects pupils in terms of prevention in the teaching, but as well as lectures and discussions at schools from external and special trained workers. The main goal of this thesis was increasing of awareness of the public about this issue.

Analytical part of the thesis is focused on analysis of recent situation in the market with cannabis products. There is presented survey dedicated to consumption of cannabis drugs by students of high (secondary) schools. The survey also deals with attitudes of these students towards cannabis drugs. The survey is the source of data for regression analysis. Research has shown the most of users of marijuana do not pay for the drug. In case of act of buying there are frequent volume distcounts. Procurations of anti-drug policy which are trying to influence the price therefore may not have any impacts on buying behavior.
Price Discrimination on the Marijuana Market: Schwag or Endo?
Stroukal, Dominik ; Šťastný, Daniel (advisor) ; Bolcha, Peter (referee)
This paper presents an example of price discrimination on the market for marijuana in northern Bohemia in 2006. First, a model for a multifirm market is built, with emphasis on the existence of two types of firms and two qualities good offered. It is shown that in the case of a dealer of two qualities of marijuana there is an incentive to raise the price of the more expensive quality and reduce the price of the cheaper. Using econometric estimates, price discrimination is found in accordance with the predictions of the model in the amount of about 50 crowns per gram.

Zemanová, Miroslava ; Písař, Pavel (advisor) ; Chalupníček, Pavel (referee)
This thesis refers to the contemporary drugs policy and its impact in the area of cannabis. Even if the antidrug policy is set by the international conventions of the United nations, there are many significant differences among states especially if cannabis is concerned. These policies focus mainly on the supply side restrictions, but the aim of the thesis is to analyze the effects on the demand side of the market. First, the main principles of the antidrug policies of selected states are described. The states were picked up to compare the most different policies of the western society possible. The USA represents a prohibitionist approach on the other hand the Netherlands and the Czech republic are closer to the liberal approach. The purpose of the thesis is to find such a policy that is succesful at reducing the number of cannabis users. The comparaison is based on several indicators such as rates of use, drug potency and it also considers the costs of state drug control funding.
