Specifics of Translating Biblical Texts into Czech Sign Language

The bachelor thesis is concerned with the principles of translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses Bible translation in general, and more specifically, in relation to sign language translation. It summarises existing findings from studies on foreign translations of biblical texts into sign languages, such as American Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, Sign Language Lesco. The practical part provides an analysis of the Dictionary of Signs for Christian Concepts for Deaf People and two video translations of passages from New Testament into Czech Sign Language, making recommendations for updates to the Dictionary based on these findings. The thesis then brings together the theoretical knowledge and the present findings and proposes a set of principles and mandatory guidelines for translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. Role of a Deaf Assistant in Primary Schools for pupils with Hearing Impairment

Thesis dealt with deaf assistants who work in primary school for pupils with hearing impairment. The aim was to find out their benefits for pupils with hearing impairment. The first chapters include introduction to the topic of hearing impairment, cultural minority the Deaf, development and education of students with hearing disabilities, focusing on the personality of the deaf assistant and his contribution in the educational process. Another part of the thesis deals with the research whose objective was to describe the influence of deaf assistant at a primary school for pupils with hearing impairment within the teaching process. The survey was carried out by observation in the classroom, where the deaf assistant worked primarily with the hearing teacher. As is clear from the survey results, the presence of a deaf assistant at a primary school for pupils with hearing impairment is of great importance for the development and education of pupils with hearing impairment in many ways.
Sign language interpreting at universities in the Czech Republic

The Bachelor's thesis "Interpreting for the Deaf at Czech Universities" maps out the current situation of providing interpreters at universities, and it describes ways of providing and problems encountered by responsible support centres. It consists of two parts. The first part is theoretical and it describes legislative measures concerning interpreters in the operative legislation in the Czech Republic, it further gives an overview of support centres assisting students with disabilities at individual universities which stress providing interpreting services to students, and it finally focuses on two university programmes of study intended primarily for deaf students where interpreting is taken for granted. The second part is practical and it includes research conducted as a questionnaire inquiry. The research focuses on opinions of deaf university students about the level of provided interpreting and their personal experiences with and opinions about interpreting provided during their studies. The thesis describes the results of the research and adds suggestions about possible solutions to the given problematic situations. Factors influencing interpreter's performance in educational facility

The thesis deals mainly with all the aspects having an impact on the interpreter's setting at primary and secondary schools and colleges. Whether special or mainstream with deaf students integrated. In the theoretical part, we can learn about characteristics of educational interpreting, development of this type of interpreting in the Czech Republic and the situation in interpreting in 1991 and since that year until now. Most of the work deals with the individual factors that influence the quality of simultaneous interpretation in general way. From these factors, I chose those that were specific to sign language interpreting in the sphere of education. To have an idea of what the current situation in the education of interpreters is, I interviewed one interpreter of each secondary school or college. In the practical part we will find a questionnaire survey of Czech sign language interpreters working in the field of education. This survey aims to determine whether the factors have anticipated impact on interpreters in education during the interpretation process, and if so to what extent. Answers and opinions of the interpreters from the questionnaire investigation have been summarized in the survey part. Time Prepositions in Writings of Czech Deaf

The thesis deals with the written Czech language of the Czech Deaf, specifically with time prepositions. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes knowledge about the written Czech language of the Czech Deaf, the ways of expressing tense in Czech language and in Czech sign language and gives the description of Czech prepositions, especially Czech time prepositions. The second part of the thesis is practical and includes the research focused on using time prepositions in writings of the Czech Deaf. The research includes the analysis of written texts and also testing of qualities in the usage of prepositional phrases by pupils and students of schools for the hearing-impaired. The thesis is based on Czech and foreign studies related to relevant topics.
Sign Writing

This bachelor's thesis examines the SignWriting notation system and its application for Czech Sign Language. SignWriting is a notation system that allows for graphical representation of sign languages. Due to the simultaneous articulation in the manual-visual modality of sign languages, sign language notation systems are very different from those used for spoken (audio-oral) languages. Sign languages contain manual and non-manual elements all of which can be represented in SignWriting using pictorial (iconic) symbols. The introductory chapters of this thesis describe the origins and progressive transformation of SignWriting, its basic principles and the method of individual symbol formation. Further, the thesis introduces specific symbols used for the manual components of signs - place of articulation, handshape, movement and body contact, non-manual components of signs - body movement and position, facial expressions and mouthing, and the use of punctuation symbols. The last chapter discusses the use of SignWriting in the Czech Republic and worldwide.
Multilingualism in sound film

This thesis deals with issues of multilingualism, i. e. appearance of two or more different languages, in a film. The first part of the thesis provides an introduction to the theory of communication, then follows a brief look at the character of film communication, i. e. its primary and secondary stucture. The second part concerns with multilingualism on both levels of communication in film discourse. The author discusses filmmaker's intentions related to comprehension or incomprehension of a foreign-language text and establishes the functions of multilingualism. The following parts research three separate film categories whose classification is based on types of languages that appear in film. The first category embraces films in that several different real spoken languages figure, the second one includes films where real spoken language and fictional language appear, films of the third category present spoken language and means of communication used by deaf people. Changing Role of an Educator in the Life of a Person with a Hearing Impairment

This bachelor thesis discusses the different conditions in the boarding houses for people with hearing impairments now and in the past. It provides the experience of the deaf and overviews available literature. The theoretical part explains the basic terms associated with hearing impairment, communication, and methods of educating the deaf, deaf institutions, defines the upbringing, education and teaching positions and deals with the boarding house in the context of past and present. The practical part describes the experience of hearing impaired people with boarding houses and with educators using a questionnaire survey analysis.
Application for Sign Language Education for People with Mental Handicap

The thesis describes creation and development of an application for sign language education for people with mental handicap. The thesis describes basic principles of the theory of computer therapy, which is the basis for the application, as well as a target group of users. The application is developed for the operation systems Android and iOS, which are briefly introduced in this work. Then there is an analysis of some already existing applications of this kind, a design of a new application, and implementation of the design. At the end, there is a feedback by three application users with mental handicap and their lectors, and there is also a plan for the further extension of the application proposed.
The Hearing Child´s Life in the World of Silence

This work inquires into a life of a hearing child who is brought up by deaf parents. The theoretical part is characterized by people with hearing disabilities, their education, communication and culture. It describes the different life for the child with deaf parents. These children are a specific group, which is rooted in two worlds - the world of deaf people and the world hearing ones. These children are often bilingual, at home they communicate in sign language and away from home in czech language. Almost all of these children are experienced by interpreting for their parents. Parents are often dependent on their children. The practical part includes three case reports of these offspring and their comparison. All the girls consistently described both negative and positive aspects of their lives.
