English book titles in gerundial form
Blaheta, Radek ; Dušková, Libuše (advisor) ; Šaldová, Pavlína (referee)
The category of gerund is a symptomatic component of the grammatical system of present-day English. Numerous studies have dealt with its nature and functions as well as with its delimitation as opposed to related forms of present participle or verbal noun. No matter whether the term gerund is used or not and whether it is theoretically sustainable to differentiate between the related -ing forms, it is obvious that the -ing form that in many contexts clearly displays both nominal and verbal features plays a crucial role within both written and spoken discourse. Nonetheless, apart from the gerund operating within continuous texts, it is revealing to explore its behaviour and functions in the text-frame components, particularly the title, i.e. a text-frame component with a crucial role in the printed publication of a book type. In this context, it is necessary to present 3 basic starting points of the present study: 1. the notion of gerund as a grammatical category is retained in this study (see 2.1.3); 2. a new term - gerund title l - is introduced in order to capture the analyzed structures (see the detailed characterization in 2.3); 3. the analysis is largely based on the functional approach.

Re/construction of masculine identity among men with disabilities within the Czech auto/biographical narrative. The diploma thesis thematizes intersection of masculinity/ masculinities and disability. It focuses on mechanisms and strategies that are used for self-defining by men with disabilities in the intention of hegemonic discourse of masculinity. These mechanisms and strategies are uncovered on the strength of chosen autobiographical and biographical texts. Content of czech autobiographical and biographical textual material is compared and it serves as a background for critical interpretation of particularly circumscribed narrative of disability in the context of manliness within the czech sociocultural milieu. Epistemological and ontological scope is social constructivism resp. critical theory paradigm. Method of deconstruction is a qualitative content analysis focused on manhood acts creating a sense of male non/normative body through interaction, relation and categorization. Men with disabilities are conceived by processes of re/masculinization and normalization, which are linked to marginalized status and disadvantageous sociocultural representations of the men with non-normative bodies. Keywords: masculinity/ masculinities, disability, intersectionality, auto/biography, narrative,...

Context-Dependent Dictionary for Translators
Fanta, Petr ; Bojar, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kuboň, Vladislav (referee)
During a manual translation of short texts, such as texts occurring on social networks or microblogs (e.g., Twitter), translators are often forced to gather additional information from various sources. These can include less common words, domain-specific terms, or numerous abbreviations. The aim of this thesis is to design and implement a system which automatically creates a minimal context-dependent dictionary for the given short message. The system identifies suitable dictionary entries in the translated text and searches for their definitions, translations, and examples from available open sources, or extracts them automatically from a parallel corpus. The resulted dictionary is ideally sufficient for human translators to understand the message, and to choose appropriate translation equivalent (including technical terms). An empirical evaluation is based on statistics which tracks how often users were satisfied with the proposed entries, how often the entries were incorrect and to what extent the system correctly identified the relevance for the input text.

The access to healthcare for asylum seekers in Italy: disparities between legislation and practice
Rossetti, Elisa ; Štěrbová, Ludmila (advisor) ; Zeitel Bank, Natascha (referee)
Asylum seekers are a socially excluded migrant population, presenting specific healthcare needs, which are often not acknowledged, nor properly addressed by national and European laws. Hailing from areas with poor sanitary attention, exposed to violence during the journey, they arrive to Italy with a high health vulnerability. The aim of this thesis is to find the discrepancies between the legislation providing healthcare access to the asylum seekers, in compliance with the fundamental human rights, and the practical healthcare responses in the Italian context of the North African Emergency (2011-2013), relying on a systematic literature review. The emergency-driven responses to the asylum inflow resulted in a heterogeneous reception and healthcare assistance, as the Italian asylum legislation focuses more on asylum procedures than healthcare, which remains regionally fragmented too. Asylum seekers faced discrimination and barriers in accessing healthcare, mainly due to information, linguistic and bureaucratic difficulties. Therefore, NGOs and associations intervened locally to fill the gap left by the institutional response, with a better focus on the social determinants of health and the importance of social integration as well. After 2013, better reception conditions were formulated and the legislation revised. However, the difference between legislation and practice on the asylum seekers healthcare access constitutes a human rights violation still present nowadays. Clearer approaches should be developed to address the issue uniformly.
