Pastoral care, or persuasion? The influence of church leaders and their control of clergy and believers. Research of religiosity, communication strategies of priests and their image in letters in the late 19th and early 20th century. Tomáš W. Pavlíček SUMMARY The author of the Ph.D. thesis examines the religious culture in Bohemia in the late 19th century. Contrary to the concept of secularization and the prevalent opinion about an extraordinary decline of religiosity in the Czech society, he attempts to explain the interdependence of social and religious changes in the modern times. Within the sociological concept of secularization and disenchantment of the world, the author focuses on three phenomena: the vocation of a priest, religious practices and conversion, which he treats as religious concepts and at the same time applies them in historical research. The biggest part of the thesis is devoted to the first object of the research - the attitude of a priest towards his vocation, as the clergy is the agent of religious change. The thesis contributes to the current discussions about the relationship of the church and the state and the role of clergy in the society. The main questions are: What is the role of a priest in the religious changes? In what way or under what circumstances does a person get the...

Analysis of the experience of pastoral care in hospitals
Lauerová, Dana ; Vodáčková, Daniela (advisor) ; Šťastná, Jaroslava (referee)
(in English): The topic of pastoral care in hospitals leads us to places that are not very well known to the public. Almost everyone knows what the words mean, but not everyone is able to explain what pastoral care offers, who provides it, and where people can seek it. My thesis aims to explain and document the role of a hospital chaplain, and to define the contents and the potential of pastoral care. Furthermore, I have tried to find out, whether and where there is place for pastoral, spiritual care within our health care system. Also who is using this type of care and whether and how the care is perceived by its potential recipients. What I value the most about my work is the opportunity to gain knowledge from chaplains, clerics, workers of the spiritual care wards, who describe their duties accurately. They explain the ways and methods of providing pastoral care, name target groups, introduce dilemmas and situations of crises within their service. They reveal the way of finding the power to do their duties, give recommendations for the improvement of pastoral care coming from both the provider and the medical facility. The objective of my thesis is to clarify the role, contents and meaning of pastoral care in the health care system. The thesis brings both general and specific pieces of knowledge...
The king as a writer: The image of Anglo-Saxon rulers in the perspective of contemporary artists and society
Kantorová, Aneta ; Panušková, Lenka (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee)
The present thesis focuses on the importance of the written word as a ruling device of the Anglo- Saxon kings. Due to the availability of historical evidence, the studied period begins in 597 with the arrival of Christian missionaries from Rome and ends prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066. The kings' approach to the written word is analyzed on the basis of surviving literary and iconographic evidence, i.e. on documents composed for or by the rulers, and on the visual images of the rulers as portrayed in surviving manuscripts. The first chapter provides a historical background necessary for the correct interpretation of the examined texts and portraits. This section is aimed at the main concepts discussed in the thesis: medieval authorship, medieval kingship, and the spread of Christianity within the Anglo- Saxon kingdoms. The second chapter offers the analysis of written documents and focuses on the texts composed within the scope of King Alfred's educational and religious reform. The close reading of the OE translations demonstrates the king's use of the texts as didactic tools mainly serving to promote religion and learning within the kingdom. The key texts are Gregory's Pastoral Care, Augustine's Soliloquies, and Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy; an additional context of the king's life and...
