Clinical Application of Lung Function Testing in Children
Bašek, Pavel ; Kokštein, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kopřiva, František (referee) ; Pohunek, Petr (referee)
SUMMARY: In my thesis I have been able to show important results from the clinical application of lung function testing in young children. Following children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, we have shown that many survivors of CDH have significant respiratory problems. However, the continual growth of airways and lung corrects the initial pulmonary function deficit. In our study, we reported on exhaled nitric oxide in CDH survivors and found normal, non-elevated levels. Studying children with inflammatory bowel disease, unlike as a single published study in adults, we found elevated exhaled nitric oxide also in children with non-active inflammatory bowel disease. The fact that conventional analysis of spirometric parameters failed in predicting the course of asthma has motivated our group to next study. It was an intriguing observation, that the subjective analysis of clinical severity of obstructive lung disease can be correlated to the measurement of curvature by using a mathematical equation. Nitric oxide is an important mediator of inflammation in several pathological conditions and the tendency to measure exhaled nitric oxide under different conditions has reached the neonatal medicine also. The multiple- breath method allows sampling of exhaled air via side stream during tidal breathing in...

Epidermal growth factor receptor as a predictor of tumor response to preoperative chemoradiation in locally advanced gastric carcinoma
Sirák, Igor ; Petera, Jiří (advisor) ; Šlampa, Pavel (referee) ; Soumarová, Renata (referee)
The purpose of my doctoral thesis was a retrospective evaluation whether the intensity of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression in tumor biopsy predicts tumor response to preoperative chemoradiotherapy in patients with locally advanced gastric carcinoma. Thirty-six patients with gastric adenocarcinoma in clinical T2-4 stage and/or with nodal metastases were studied. Preoperative treatment consisted of 30-45 Gy of gastric irradiation with continuous 5-fluorouracil and weekly cisplatin. Surgical resection was performed 4-6 weeks later. EGFR expression in pretreatment tumor biopsies was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Level of EGFR expression was determined from the intensity and extent of staining. Tumor response after chemoradiotherapy was defined as a reduction of at least one T-stage level and/or finding of intense tumor regression in histopathologic examination. Seventeen patients responded to preoperative chemoradiation - 8 patients (22%) had pathologic complete response, 9 patients (25%) were downstaged. Positive EGFR expression was found in 8 tumors (22%), and represented a significant predictive marker of poor tumor response in multivariate logistic regression analysis (p = 0.015). Response to chemoradiotherapy was found in 57% (16/28) of EGFR negative patients and in 13% (1/8)...

Measuring performance of financial institutions
Pohanka, Eduard ; Křížek, Tomáš (advisor)

Radical view of subjectivism according to L. M. Lachmann and its implications for consumer theory
Panáčková, Eliška ; Špecián, Petr (advisor) ; Máslo, Lukáš (referee)
This Bachelor Degree Thesis is concerned with methodological approach of the radical subjectivist economist Ludwig M. Lachmann and application of his approach on consumer theory. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether is methodological approach of Lachmann compatible with the approach used in mainstream consumer theory, eventually how these approaches are different. The first part deals with the context of radical subjectivism, its pivotal points and the general differences in methodology of Lachmann and mainstream. Then I devote the work of Alfred Schutz, George L. S. Shackle and Max Weber, on the basis of which Lachmann reached the radical approach. In the practical part I apply radical subjectivism on the consumer theory and according to these result I evaluate these approaches are not compatible. Arguments of radical approach is not supported by strong evidence, and this approach is incapable of giving prediction more quality alternative of consumer theory.
