Borůvková, Tereza ; Čížek, Martin (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
This work is focused on development of anti-homosexual legislation and conditions of decriminalization in the newly established Russian federation. It is focused on attempts to organize Gay Pride festival in Moscow in 2006 and negative reactions of Russian authorities and subsequent lawsuit. The works informs on change in rhetoric with respect to LGBT community, which was cause by medialization of Gay Pride affair as well conservatism that was being established. It describes Russian conservatism that set itself in contrast to the West by its traditional values, which are in alleged conflict with homosexuality. This development reached its summit in 2013 when anti-propagation law was enacted on federal level. We then focus on immediate reaction to enactment of this legislation and its effects. The work draws from academic articles that appeared after enactment of the act and, and importantly also news articles that could capture ensuing event in real time. It becomes apparent that ostracizing of homosexuals in Russia is a long-term trend that is supported by state controlled news agencies and legislative steps. We explain behavior that is subjected to recently enacted anti-propagation act and reasons for its enactment. In addition, we review how this act is criticized by LGBT activists all over the...

Vlčanová, Kateřina ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Švec, Kamil (referee)
The aim of the present thesis is to determine whether the Tea Party candidatesʼ attitudes towards selected controversial issues influenced their electoral success and the success of the Tea Party movement as a whole. The thesis consists of two parts, theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part the author focuses on the historical perspective of the political and party system in the United States of America, bipartism and position of third parties in the system. It also includes a brief analysis of the Democratic and Republican parties. Next, the author examines the Tea Party phenomenon - its genesis, structure, purposes and ideals. The subsequent section deals with three controversial issues, i.e. abortion, LGBT rights, and race, which reflect an ideological cleavage among the american public. The empirical part presents a case study entitled The influence of controversial issues on the (non)success of the Tea Party candidates, which deals with attitudes of the House and Senate Tea Party candidates who won the 2010 congressional elections towards the above- mentioned controversial issues.
Travesti show and sexual orientation from the perspective of addiction psychology.
Fejklová, Martina ; Matoušek, Petr (advisor) ; Kalina, Kamil (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of interrelation among addiction, homosexuality and drag/travesti subculture. Since, according to numerous studies, there exists some connection between an increased risk of addiction creation and the LGBT community, the aim of this thesis is, building upon a case study, to map out one of the segments, to which only little attention is devoted in the scientific literature, both on the gender and on the addiction problematics - i.e. the possible effect of drag/travesti subculture on the addiction creation. Due to the fact that drag performers are gay and at the same time they exhibit significant femininity features, they are exposed to a double social stigmatisation, often even by the gay subculture. This stigmatisation as well as discrimination and struggle with their own identity are the factors which - as suggested by the scientific literature - can contribute to development of an addiction. The case study conducted in the practical part of the thesis focuses on mapping out of the development of drug addiction by one Czech travesti performer. The data obtained served to create a general picture of how the sexual orientation and gender identity but also a specific social environment can contribute to a possible use of various types of addictive...

The Changing Legal and Social Status of the LGBT People in the U.S. Since 1990
Sochacký, Jakub ; Hervey, Norma (advisor) ; Young, Ralph (referee)
This paper deals with the role of American courts, specifically their decisions, regarding the rights and social status of LGBT people, which is an acronym standing for lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. The main finding is that court decisions in favor of LGBTs make lives of such people even more difficult, because authorities in states where such decisions are taken often try to circumvent these decisions using legislative powers. However, in the long term, it seems that courts manage to initiate debates about LGBT-related topics with various arguments that the American society is forced to consider. It appears that in such debates common sense prevails over prejudices and myths. One such myth that was widely accepted by society was that when a child lives with a homosexual in a common household, such child was going to become homosexual him- or herself. This paper also explores an analogy between current efforts of LGBT people to reach full equality and secure anti- discrimination measures for themselves and the struggle for civil rights of African-Americans. Both these groups have faced treatment which suggested that they are second-class citizens. One of the ways society expresses this second-class citizenry is by denying LGBTs access to the institution of marriage arguing it...

Between Liberal Policies and Conservative Values: The Role of the EU in Improving Sexual Minority Rights in Albania
Vinther, Christian Kjaelder ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Žíla, Ondřej (referee)
Master Thesis by Christian K. Vinther, Charles University, Prague (77110981) 21/05/2015 Between Liberal Policies and Conservative Values: The Role of the EU in Improving Sexual Minority Rights in Albania Abstract In 2009 the People's Advocate in Albania announced their suggestion that Albania should become the first Balkan country to legalize gay marriage, a suggestion backed by the country's Prime Minister Sali Berisha. The odd thing is that this suggestion was presented in the same country voted the "most homophobic in Europe" according to a recent study, and simultaneously the suggestion came at a time when Albania did not even have an anti-discrimination law, and, assumingly, at a time when LGBT activist groups seemed more or less nonexistent. Since 2009, Albania has progressed severely in relation to LGBT matters, and the small Balkan country has adopted noteworthy liberal sexual minority policies. Yet, as stated above, this appears as a rather paradoxical fact, since homophobia in Albania appears widespread, and since it could be questioned why a country would even need to legalize gay marriage, since the gay population are unlikely to benefit from this kind of legislation, due to the harassment and marginalization of this particular minority group. The mismatch between the conservative values in...
