Standard - Non-standard in the Modern Czech
Velčovský, Václav ; Mališ, Otakar (referee) ; Starý, Zdeněk (advisor)
The thesis focuses especially on three aims: (1) to characterise the development of opinions about literary language since the time of Dobrovský until today, (2) to analyse various theories, models and aspects of the literary language as a specific variety of national language in the Czech eyes and (3) to attempt to create, analyse and apply a certain term that would cover the suggestibility and influencing of the concept of literary language by non-linguistic factors. Dobrovský, who, in fact, was the first to codify Veleslavín Czech in all its complexity, is often blamed for the present linguistic (partly diglossic) situation. On the other hand, he conceived his grammar as a description of the humanistic Czech. Only the succeeding generation made a norm of it and the norm was to be accepted by the new Czech language. What Dobrovský described was brought to life by Jungmann and his generation. With regard to the incomplete functional spectrum of humanistic Czech, the situation was even more complicated. The foundation stone of the new Czech language was the Czech - German antagonism. Defensive purism was in the tempestuous time of language and administrative disputes of Cisleithania replaced by an offensive one. PLC tried to cope with the heritage of the offensive purism in the light of change of the...

The language of the Portuguese advertising
Melounová, Irena ; Jindrová, Jaroslava (referee) ; Hricsina, Jan (advisor)
My graduation work, The Language of Portuguese Advertising, deals with modern and dynamic promotional discourse. The results presented in the project are based on the analysis of self-gathered promotional wordings in the Portuguese press from 2006 - 2008. The project is divided into 8 chapters reflecting individual linguistic discipline and verbal level. Advertising is mainly one-way communication originating from a company and going to anonymous parties, not a specified potential customer group. First of all, the promotional message has to catch the recipient's attention; secondly, it should inform about product purchase benefits in the best way. The conative function ranks first among the linguistic functions.Printed advertising has a verbal-iconic character. The brand name in advertising represents minimal linguistic utterance. Primarily, I devoted the chapter on pragmatics to conversational maxim denials. Promotional messages often don't adhere to relevancy and quality. They usually deputize indirect verbal acts. Expressions such as aqui and agora predominate in the temporal and local area of deixis and they refer the utterance to the moment and place of the speech. The most frequent demonstrative is este that refers to subjects being promoted. The most-used morphosyntactic means to praise a product or...

The diploma thesis describes the development of British Labour Party from its foundation in 1900 to the end of the first term of Tony Blair's government. The work focuses on the ideological development of the party in historical context. The party was founded as a left-wing organisation, supporting the working class, collaborating with trade unions and its main aim was nationalization of the means of production and establishing of socialism in Britain. The party left this aim at the end of 20th century by the revision of its constitution it claimed to be a modern social democracy, which supports capitalism. The kernel of the problems is in the so called "revisionist era", i.e. from 50th of 20th century to 90th of 20th century, when Blair became a leader. Then the party was labeled as New Labour Party and it introduced itself as an organisation with its own concept of the Third Way. The work is based mainly on publications of British political scientists, whose works have not been translated yet into a Czech language.
