Dominican Immigrant Alienation in the Short Fiction of Junot Díaz/Odcizení dominikánských imigrantů v krátkých povídkách Junota Díaze
FLACHOWSKÁ, Lenka
This diploma thesis deals with a literary analysis of the collection of short stories by an American-Dominican author Junot Díaz. The central subject of his work Drown is the problematic of immigration mainly from the Dominican Republic to the United States. This diploma thesis is focused on a detailed study of the alienting consequences caused by the uprooting of characters from their Dominican culture and nation but at the same time by the effort to assimilate with the new culture, in this case with the culture of the United States. Each of the ten stories of the collection of short stories Drown is separately evaluated and subsequently the possible causes of the alienation are deduced. Alienation is not only restricted to the culture and nation, but it also plays an important role in considering conflicts within the family members. Secondly, the thesis analyses the matter of not being able to adapt to the new environment. For a broader scope of all the probable causes and manifestations of the alienation, another three short stories by Junot Díaz published in The New York Time are added to for the analysis. Junot Díaz repeatedly mentions some of the poingnant historical events of the Dominican Republic. For better orientation, the brief history of the Dominican Republic as well as the major points of the U.S.-Dominican relations are included in this diploma thesis. The introduction also consists of biographical information about Junot Díaz and short theory of postcolonial literature.
The Transformation of the U.S. Labor Market during the Period 1939-1945
Šafařík, Martin ; Johnson, Zdenka (advisor) ; Tajovský, Ladislav (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the influence of the Second World War on the labor market in the USA. In addition to explaining changes to the labor market as a whole, an emphasis is put on the labor market with regard to specific relevant minorities (namely women, Americans of Japanese descent and Afro-Americans). The main part of each chapter is devoted to sector changes in employment on the supply side of the market. This thesis indicates that the circumstances of the Second World War and the Postwar Era greatly shaped the circumstances of the U.S. labor market during these periods. Employment during this time also demonstrated characteristics of being affected greatly by these significant events. The results of this thesis also indicate that the Second World War in the context of the labor market contributed to breaking certain social barriers connected to the process of employment, which in turn accelerated the social evolution of some groups.

Ritterová, Zuzana ; Minárik, Pavol (advisor) ; Hladík, Miroslav (referee)
This diploma thesis shows, that higher incomes of American Jewish people are related to specific factors. The question is if there is some kind of specific human capital which influences Jewish incomes and if there is, how it differs from the common human capital. To find out the answer, the earnings of Jewish men and women and earnings of common Americans without connection to religion will be analyzed. Besides proving the importance and influence of education, other factors, which may increase or decrease the incomes, are also mentioned in the text. This thesis adds to the topic by including analyses of the qualitative data gained by the author; it thus should add to completeness of the research.

The aim of the thesis is not only to analyze US foreign policy towards Iran but also to deal with the issue of the US non-intervention of Iranian territory to halt the Iranian nuclear program.
