Sustainable development indicators of european regions at the NUTS 2 level
HOŘČICA, Antonín
This work is focused on indicators of sustainable development in European regions at the level NUTS 2. The historical context of the concept of sustainable development and its current application are described. This information serves as a starting point for eval-uating the fulfilment of the concept's objectives using sustainability indicators. The fol-lowing is an overview of the requirements for these indicators and their definition in re-lation to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a key indicator of economic perfor-mance. The main sustainability indicators used at the global and regional levels are de-scribed, and the organizations that publish the indicators are listed. The Regional Human Development Index (RHDI) indicator was chosen for the practical part of this work. The aim of the work was to check its applicability in regions at the level at the NUTS 2 in comparison with the indicator of GDP per capita and to find out whether there is a re-lationship between them. The main result of the work is that the direct relationship be-tween GDP per capita and RHDI has not been confirmed. Partial results are the finding of interregional differences between the two indicators and the fact that a higher value of GDP per capita does not necessarily mean a better RHDI result. The RHDI indicator can be considered as a very good tool for monitoring progress in the sustainability of re-gions at the level NUTS 2 and that it can be used to compare EU regions. Therefore, it should serve at least as a complementary indicator to GDP per capita, possibly in con-junction with other sustainability indicators, such as the Genuine Progress Index (GPI) and / or the Sustainable Development Goals Index (SDG Index). Further developments in the field of sustainability indicators are necessary in view of the need to assess future European Green New Deal sustainable development plans.
