Remittances and their impact on Eastern Europe
Kršjaková, Zuzana ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Stuchlíková, Zuzana (referee)
Diploma thesis "Remittances and their impact on Eastern Europe" examines the phenomenon of remittances as part of global migration and its having been largely economically motivated and having a positive impact on poverty alleviation. The chosen approach is empirical-analytical methodology. The paper suggests several motivations leading to migration and remittances as well as some positive impacts and risks affecting the senders, receivers as well as the beneficiary economies of remittances. This thesis offers an overview of both all principal source countries and the main corridors of remittance flow. The paper analyses three countries from the former eastern block - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova - and the reasons which have lead to migration and remitting in these states in relation to their economic transformation from centrally planned to market economies. The analysis considers many factors such as the regional financial crisis in 1998 as well as the ethnically based military conflict which occurred due to the disintegration process in the former Yugoslavia. These issues influence not only the scale of remittances flow but also expand the variety of the senders which commonly include both refugees and Diasporas. Lastly, this thesis presents some possible scenarios related to the...
Okun's Law and Social Expenditure
Batíková, Marta ; Hanus, Luboš (advisor) ; Baxa, Jaromír (referee)
This thesis analyses Okun's law and its cross-country differences based on social expenditures. To estimate the law in time, Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimation is employed, which has not been applied to Okun's law in any previous study. Thus, to assess the robustness of the model, the statistical testing of hypotheses is used to evaluate the time-varying coefficients. The analysis is executed on OECD countries between 1995 and 2019, and the results are mainly in line with the previous literature. Periods with higher GDP growth and lower unemployment rates, on average, tend to have higher Okun's coefficients. Moreover, cross-country comparison reports the tendency of countries with, on average lower unemployment spending and higher GDP per capita to exhibit higher Okun's coefficients.
Decent Work and Economic Growth-Analysis of the Sustainable Development Goal 8
Letovská, Vendula ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kopečná, Vědunka (referee)
Sustainable Development Goals are focused on international cooperation in the field of socioeconomic, political and environmental issues. This bachelor's thesis deals with Goal 8, which promotes achievement of sustainable economic growth, decent work and full employment, and examines three indicators of the goal: annual growth of GDP per capita, domestic material consumption and the rate of unemployment. Thesis is based on the panel data analysis of 132 countries, which were obtained from the World Bank and Sustainable Development Goals databases for selected variables as observed in the time period of 2000 - 2019. According to the regression results, variables education, inflation, adjusted net savings and unemployment rate report significant effects on the annual growth of GDP per capita. Similarly, unemployment rate is strongly affected by the level of obtained education and inflation, as well as by the growth of population and GDP per capita. Inference of domestic material consumption did not uncover any statistically significant variables. Evaluation of the best-fitted forecast models does not predict a strong probability of actually fulfilling the goal or at least its sub targets by the agreed deadline. Thus the Goal 8 proves to be difficult to achieve only a few years after the introduction...
Three essays in Development Economics
Valíčková, Petra ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Janda, Karel (referee) ; Ščasný, Milan (referee) ; Nicolas, Claire (referee)
This dissertation thesis touches on some important aspects of development, including financial development and improved access to reliable energy sources, regional integration and expanded opportunities for trade. This thesis was written to help guide policy reforms especially in developing countries to expand sources of growth and put countries on track to better meet their long-term development goals, including a better and more sustainable future for everyone. This dissertation consists of three papers. In the first paper I investigate the empirical evidence on the relationship between financial development and economic growth. In doing so, I assessed over 270 studies for their potential inclusion in a meta-analysis. From those studies that contained an empirical estimate of the finance growth relationship, I compiled 1,334 coefficients and coded study characteristics for each. Taking the reported estimates together, I find a positive link between financial development and economic growth, but with widely varying individual estimates. By applying a multi-variate meta-regression, I explain the variation in reported results, stemming not only from differences in research design (by authors addressing or ignoring potential endogeneity issues) but also from real drivers (different regional and time...
Analysis of the Investment Environment of Chinese Commercial Properties in Czech Republic
Wang, Yining ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee) ; Radošević, Slavo (referee)
Many countries would like to use foreign direct investment to increase the growth of GDP and promote stable development. The Czech Republic is one of the countries having the largest FDI within Central and Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Chinese investments have increased significantly and already became an important feature of the China-Europe relationships during recent years. The closer cooperation between China and Europe could encourage FDI. Within the kinds of FDI, the real estate industries experienced a rapid increase in many developed and emerging regions. Therefore, the aim of this study is aiming to analyse the investment environment of Chinese commercial properties in the Czech Republic. Two basic research designs will be employed for this research. The first design is focusing on collected recent available data to present the investment climate of the Czech Republic. In this part, we also make comparisons of the Czech Republic with serval economies. We found that the relatively low cost of labour, low inflation rate, easier to set-up a business (in terms of both times consuming and cash consuming) make the Czech Republic becomes more attractive. And this is consistent with the empirical analysis. Secondly, the questionnaire method was used for the study and we get back 108 questionnaires....
Fiskální decentralizace a ekonomický růst v zemích Evropské unie
Šustrová, Romana
Šustrová, R. Fiscal decentralization and economic growth in the European Union countries. Diploma thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2017. This thesis analyses relationship between fiscal decentralization and economic growth in the European Union countries. The empirical investigation is based on panel data regression analysis. The regression models include 27 member states from 1997 to 2015. The investigation of relationship between economic growth and public budget balance is also one of the research question of this thesis. This relationship is check through Granger Causality testing. Obtained results are compared with results of earlier studies.
Mzdy a produktivita práce v ČR v rámci EU
Šulcová, Darina
The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate factors that affect net wages in the economy and deal with the problem why the share of Czech annual wages on GDP is lower compared to the rest of the EU. The analysis shows the influence of social policy, minimum wage, trade unions, share of industry and services, education and R&D activities. All these factors are quantified for each member state and compared with each other. In the very end, these factors are characterized concretely for the Czech Republic and possible solutions or threats are defined.
Environmental quality related to economic growth: meta-analysis of environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis
Petříková, Viktorie
This diploma thesis examines scientific articles to determine if there is an agree-ment in literature on the topic of relationship between economic growth and en-vironment. This investigation uses meta-analysis to explore the systematic varia-tion across environmental Kuznets curve studies to better understand the specific factors that affect this relationship. Binomial and multinomial logit models are performed. Final results stimulate an ongoing discussion of not discovering any unity in this area.
Význam politických a institucionálních faktorů růstu v postsovětských zemích
Náplava, Radek
Diploma thesis focuses on chosen political and institutional factors and their rela-tion to long-run growth in post-soviet countries. Political and institutional environment represents three areas: bureaucracy (Doing Business), freedom (Free-dom House) and governance matters. For quantification of their influence is used static and dynamic panel data analysis. Results show the importance of govern-ance matters for long-run growth. Political stability, quality of political process and civil liberties also have positive impact while voice and accountability has negative. In view of the fact that results come from static panel data models, we cannot exclude the presence of endogeneity.
