Prevalence of Childhood Obesity and Associated Problems
SLAVÍČKOVÁ, Klára
Obesity is a major concern not only of the Czech Republic, but of all developed countries of the world. It is therefore a global pandemic, against which it is necessary to introduce effective measures. According to epidemiological studies, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are among the states with the highest prevalence of obesity. In most European countries, the prevalence of obesity in women is higher than in men, by about 3-6%. But a big issue is childhood obesity, which predisposes individuals to obesity also in adulthood. This results in an increased risk of premature morbidity and mortality due to complications of obesity. In obese children the risk of musculoskeletal diseases and cardiovascular and respiratory systems is increased. Obesity often leads to disorders of sexual development, skin complications and changes in the psyche. According to the World Health Organization, there are about 43 million overweight or obese children in the world. The treatment of childhood obesity is not simple. It is necessary to establish a long-term strategic plan, based on the lifestyle change focused on nutrition and eating habits, physical activity and strengthening the self-confidence of the child. This diploma thesis was carried out by the quantitative research through the secondary data analysis. The research group consisted of children registered at the general practitioner for children and adolescents, Šárka Mičanová, M.D. The main goal of my thesis was to survey the prevalence of obesity and overweight in children at this selected pediatric office. Four hypotheses were stated for the research. Hypothesis No.1, children with a high BMI at the age of 5 years show the signs of obesity also at the age of 15-17-years, has not been confirmed. Hypothesis No.2, in childhood, obesity originating in alimentation prevails over obesity of endocrinological origin, has been confirmed. The hypothesis that obesity prevalence has increased in recent years has not been confirmed. The last hypothesis presuming that levels of biochemical markers in children with overweight and obesity do not differ from those of children with a normal weight has not been confirmed.

KLUIBEROVÁ, Michaela
The thesis deals with the topic of eating disorders and with their link to the obesity and trendy lowering diets. The theoretical part involves fundamental information about eating disorders, which means general characteristics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Also abnormal disorders such as binge eating, orthorexia nervosa, bigorexia and drunkorexia are introduced here. This work further deals with risk factors that participate in developing these disorders, states the health risks resulting from these diseases and their treatment. The thesis also mentions both the links of eating disorders to the obesity and the relationship of these disorders with trendy lowering diets. Also a brief BMI characteristics is introduced. The conclusion of the work is devoted to the prevention of eating disorders. The practical part of the thesis presents the results based on my research. It had the form of blind questionnaires for two groups of students from the Secondary Grammar School of Milevsko and the Vocational School of Milevsko. The questionnaires focussed on the students? awareness of eating disorders issue, of optimum BMI and it also focused on their personal experience with lowering diets. Overall results of the research show that the students are roughly informed about the issue, however, it is essential to supply them with lacking information and focus on prevention at tender age. At the same time it is important not to underestimate dieting, as lowering diets pose a big risk for developing these disorders and not to neglect lack of information regarding the BMI values.
Nutrition of younger school children of age 7- 10 in district Třebíč - progress, trends, present situation
MARIÁNKOVÁ, Alena
In my bachelor thesis I deal with nutrition and eating habits. In the theoretical part I have tried to sum up by means of secondary literature the basic information on principles of healthy nutrition and principal nutrients necessary for healthy development of the organism. Meanwhile I focus on the researched group, that is school children in the age of 7-10. I further describe the historical development of nutrition from our ancestors to present day, I deal with actual trends in nutrition coming along our modern time and I describe pathophysiology of nutrition, especially obesity. The paper aimed at describing eating habits of school children in the district of Třebíč. The quantitative research method applying questionnaire survey was applied. The research was carried out among children at 6 primary schools, both in the town as well as in the villages. Besides researching the issue of eating habits of children and finding out information on their awareness and knowledge, the paper aimed at confirming or overcoming 4 set hypotheses. Based on the assessment of data two hypotheses have been confirmed and two overcome. The results of the research have shown that school children do not follow healthy nutrition principles. It has been further confirmed that children consume throughout the day empty calories that have no nutritional value. Unexpectedly the hypothesis was overcome which stated that along with the increase of inappropriate eating habits the BMI value is increasing. The hypothesis that eating habits differ in town and village was also overcome. The bachelor thesis can be used as a source of information on healthy nutrition and the right eating habits of children in general and the eating habits of the researched file of child population. It could be of benefit for parents and teachers as they have a great influence on children and ought to exercise a positive impact on children.
Prevalence of obesity in children in a classical kindergarden and a healthy life style kindergarden in České Budějovice
HORNÁTOVÁ, Klára
Children obesity is a frequently discussed issue nowadays as it becomes the extents of an international epidemic. It occurs in greater frequency in lower age categories, which is caused mainly by change in eating habits, a wrong composition of meals and great lack of motion. Children nowadays prefer sitting in front of their computers or television. Children obesity brings along mental harm to the child. He/she is often being laughed at for his/her weight and causing the child to feel alone and seeking solitude and many children thus succumb to overeating. Besides obesity causes health problems such diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, locomotive organs disease and mental problems. Therefore kindergarden is so important since children meet other eating habits than at home. The family is often the trigger of unhealthy eating habits. Quantitative research was applied in the bachelor thesis by means or a questionnaire for the parents. The researched file represented preschool children in the age of 3 to 6 years of age. The questionnaires were distributed in two kindergardens, one of which was a healthy life style kindergarden and the second was a classical kindergarden. Two goals were set in the paper. To assess the rate of obesity growth in children in kindergardens and to monitor the attitude of children and parents to the topic of food and obesity. The research has shown that obesity rate keeps increasing, however there is a smaller rate of obesity in the healthy life style kindergarden than in the classical one. In general, parents are well informed on the food and obesity topic in both kindergardens but in practice they do not adhere to the correct principles. Further, two hypotheses were set. Children in healthy life style kindergarden eat healthier food according to principles of rational nutrition (taking account of food in the kindergarden) and have lower BMI than other children of the same age. The first hypothesis was thus confirmed. The second hypothesis that parents are not sufficiently informed on the right eating habits for children was not confirmed. The results of the research in the bachelor thesis can be applied as study material and they were offered to parents who took part in the research.
The obesity issue in primary school children in Most
JANOŠOVÁ, Kateřina
Obesity in children has become a serious problem not only in our country but in all developed countries all over the world. The Czech Republic has ranked among the leading countries in Europe in prevalence of obesity. In an obese child the risk of later chronic diseases is increased, there is a greater probability of heart diseases, joint diseases and mental problems. An effective treatment and prevention of child obesity presupposes a complex attitude. For the bachelor thesis a quantitative research was applied by means of a questionnaire. The research file was made up by pupils of the first grade of three primary schools in Most aged 6-11 years. The main goal of the paper was to find out prevalence of obesity in school children at chosen primary schools in Most. By means of the research I came to the conclusion that 9,4% of children are overweight, 7,8% are obese. Further I have set three hypotheses. In boys of 6-10 years of age excessive weight appears more frequently than in girls, which was confirmed. Insufficient physical activity influences occurrence of obesity in younger school children. This hypothesis was also confirmed. Overweight children do not have a regular sport activity. This hypothesis was not confirmed. This bachelor thesis should be used as an information material for parents and teachers.
Prospective study: Influence of BMI, comorbidity and aplication of antibiotics on healing of laparotomical cuts by women
CIMLOVÁ, Ivana
ABSTRACT At the end of the 20th century, the rapid development of new information also affected the gynaecological surgery. Ever new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been proposed, huge quantities of ever more effective medicaments are being developed, the physicians are being confronted with the solution of problems resulting from the adverse effects of the environment on the modern man. The care for women and mothers has completely changed in the last twenty years. In the classical gynaecology the diagnostic methods and the classification have changed (the inflammatory diseases, for example), new surgical methods were introduced into the routine practice. In this paper, we address the classical gynaecological surgical methods - the surgical therapy which only uses invasive surgical methods. We monitor the surgical wound healing after abdominal laparotomies. The objective of our work was to ascertain and compare the surgical wound healing after laparotomy surgeries in women with different BMI{\crq}s [Body Mass Index] and to find out during the hospitalisation whether women with an elevated BMI (25.0-29.9) are treated with antibiotics after laparotomy surgery. Three hypotheses were proposed. The first hypothesis reads as follows: ``In women with BMI within the norm (BMI = 18.4-24.9), the operation wound heals per primam{\crqq}. The results have not confirmed this hypothesis completely. Even though the wounds healed per primam in an unequivocal majority of women, there were also women with wound healing per secundam. The second hypothesis says: ``In women with elevated BMI (25.0-29.9) and high BMI (equal or above 30.0) the surgical wound heals per secundam. The results represented in the graphs show that the second hypothesis was also disproved, there was not exclusive secondary healing in the groups with elevated and high BMI; nevertheless, the result was positive. The hypothesis 3 says: ``The women with elevated (25.0-29.9) and high (30.0 and more) BMI are treated with antibiotics during the hospitalisation. This hypothesis was confirmed. The quantitative investigation was carried out using the method of data collection from the medical documentation in randomly selected patients in the period August 2006 - November 2006. The data were collected in the archive of the České Budějovice Hospital, a. s. In this investigation, the healing of surgical wounds in women with different MBI{\crq}s was ascertained and compared. This work has brought us to the conclusion that the postoperative course is generally less complicated in women with BMI within the norm that in women with elevated or high BMI index. Therefore, attention must be paid to the increasing obesity and the connected complications, no only for health reasons. The results of this investigation can expand the health personnel{\crq}s information in the sphere of wound care after laparotomy surgery, and they could also serve as a basis for further investigations into this problem. This work can also be used in the teaching at the South-Bohemian University, published in professional journals and on the Internet.
