Comparative quantitiative content analysis of Photos from Timeline regional Facebook pages of ELLE Magazines

Theoretical part of diploma thesis Comparative quantitative content analysis of photos from Timeline regional Facebook pages of ELLE Magazine explores the theory of visual culture, what kind of role pictures or photos play in contemporary digital age. Also Facebook online marketing and Facebook pages are described. The third chapter of thesis looks into history of global trade brand ELLE Magazine and it describes the owners of brand-license in examined regional countries. The last theoretical section explores a globalization of communication including magazine trade and the Internet. The thesis also contains research review of contemporary studies with similar topic. Methodological part firstly describes a content analysis and its aplication on research of photos. Secondly a diploma research with main reseach question: Are regional differences in thematic composition of published photos on facebook pages of ELLE magazines?

Stanislav Tereba: His Career and Photographic Style

The paper focuses the career of photographer Stanislav Tereba, the only Czech winner of the main World Press Photo Prize. He succeeded with the photography of Miroslav Čtvrtníček, the soccer goalkeeper, played in Prague, Letna stadium. The paper deals mainly with Tereba's work in evening paper Vecerni Praha where the winning photography was paid a great attention there. As well as a lot of journalists since the 1990's Tereba have faced the problems after the Velvet Revolution when his career nearly stopped as the media went to private ownership. Tereba's career is explored in the context of the development of sports photography in the Czech Republic. Tereba's photographic style is studied by using semiotic analysis and the method of compositional interpretation there. In addition, the work consists of a case study of Tereba's success in World Press Photo. Tereba's photography is compared to the other winning photographs as well as to the competition in 1959 when he was honored with the main prize at the expense of war photographs usually awarded. Attention is also paid to the creation of Tereba's winning photography from participation in the stadium to subsequent photo editing.

Use of user-generated content in Czech media: the case of Metro daily

This thesis is a case study examining a user-generated content delivered to a newsroom of Metro daily and its subsequent evaluation, selection and utilization in printed edition of the newspaper. Their bold attempt of participatory journalism - online gallery of readers' photographs - remains one of the few successful examples of this type of alternative journalism in Czech media even after five years since its foundation. The first chapter provides necessary field context related to the demonopolization and deprofessionalization of journalism as well as to the transformation of the communication framework and the roles of the producer (journalist) and the user (recipient) of media content, furthermore some types of alternative journalism are listed and distinctively characterized. Secondly, a phenomenon of user-generated content (UGC) is described in detail, focusing on its specifics in relation to journalism and on selected examples of the UGC occurring in Czech media. The role of embedded journalism in reporting on Medecins Sans Frontieres missions

Médecins Sans Frontières is one of the most respected humanitarian organisations in the world, they focus mainly on providing medical care in places of emergency and war. These places are also interesting for journalists who can take advantage of the protection on the missions while also acquiring unique stories. Working in conflicted areas under a protection of an organisation is called embedded journalism. This concept has been until now studied in connection with army when journalists travel with soldiers. Therefore, their view of war can be distorted. However, a journalist who travels with Médecins Sans Frontières may also have a distorted view of world. Twelve journalists from around the world, who visited the missions and documented the work of doctors, gave interviews for this diploma thesis. In the interviews, they described their experiences, the advantages and disadvantages of being embedded, and how the organisation may have influenced their work. Several Médecins Sans Frontières workers have also shared their experience. The interviews were put in context by a content analysis that focused on the articles and photographs made on missions by these journalists.

Authorship of the online photography

This thesis focuses on the issue of authorship of the online photograph. For purpose of dealing with this matter the thesis defines term photograph from the media and legal point of view and deals with the ethical and the legal aspect of use of photograph. The thesis pursues the principle of authorship and stipulates all the conditions which shall be fulfilled in order to determine the origin of authorship. Other part of this thesis is focused on the possible means of use of online photograph with and without the consent of its author according to the applicable laws of the Czech Republic. In this part, all suitable means of use of photograph are described - use for the personal need, free use and news licence. The licence agreement and related matter of online photograph provided by the photo bank are analysed as the use of online photograph with the consent of the author. In conclusion of the practical part, the thesis briefly pursues court decisions in connection with the use of online photograph available so far. Final part of this thesis deals with the issue of use of online photograph in practice. From Linguistic Aberration to the Subversion of Power: Literary Code-switching and Code-mixing as Tools for Upsetting the Language of Power and Expressing Expatriation

This thesis explores literary code-switching, i.e. multilingual aspects within a single speech, as a key polyphonic structural element in the selected works. First, it analyzes Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands: The New Mestiza = La Frontera (1987) as a work, where the author seeks to establish a literary tradition that would reflect the life in borderlands and the given community through a new language. Secondly, the language of photography and multilingual speech patterns in W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants (1992) are considered as vital elements of the authenticity play. The following chapter deals with Franz Kafka's short stories, where gestures form an essential part of, if not the whole stories, and determine the fragmentary nature of such writing. Finally, the importance of language of power, the discourse of social realism altogether with their emergence into private and intimate discussions through repetitions and variations is commented upon in Václav Havel's play The Garden Party (1963).

Visualition of Great War in the Weekly Světozor

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of imaging of Great War in czech weekly "Světozor". It will examine how much space during years 1914-1918 is given to war events, what sides of the war conflict are shown and with what frequency. The thesis also wants to cover whether there is any change in the manner of imaging during the course of the war. Last section of the thesis will be on the topic how could the reader perceive the Great War based on the photographs of this weekly.
