The Paper on Understanding the Subsistence Manner on the Transition of Neolithic and Eneolithic Age (a Comparative Study between the Western Culture Complex and Regions of Bohemia and Moravia)

The study presented deals with the phenomenon of increased hunting activity on the transition of the Neolithic and Eneolithic Age, the reasons of which have been so far investigated only in regard to environmental conditions of locations. The phenomenon is observed on locations of a wide area of Middle Europe. Nevertheless, there exist locations with prevailing agricultural economy. On the basis of a detailed comparative analysis of the material culture of the Western culture circle and Bohemia and Moravia, the study aims to trace the reflection of the phenomenon in archaeological materials - differences between locations with predominant domestic sources, and locations with predominant wild sources. Alongside, the study deals with a possible environmental impact on increasing hunting tendencies. In order to created a database, a detailed catalogue of locations has been compiled. The catalogue holds the most essential information on material culture with regard to expected agricultural manners. The catalogue also serves as a clue for setting particular indicators of the database, the purpose of which is to organise the data in a comparable form. The Stroked pottery site Jaroměř in the light of the settlement of eastern Bohemia in the younger neolithic

The present work describes the results of processing the excavations obtained during the research of habitation at a Stroke-ornamented ware culture in Jaroměř (Náchod county). The inner chronology of the habitation was studied using spatial relation analysis and the study of the ceramic collection. Through the study of the stone tools, the habitation was set within the wider distribution relationships of the region and it was also possible to observe the manufacturing activity in the researched location. With the help of the ceramic remains, three residential phases were identified which correspond with the shift between the older and the younger degree of culture. This chronology also corresponds with the changing building tradition of the houses of the habitation. The existence of an independent manufacturing region was not proved. The present study looks at the form of the pottery at an important time when the Lengyel influence started to permeate from Moravia to Bohemia. Neolithic house in the Balkans - genesis and ethnoarcheological study

Thesis focuses on the house and its evolution in the Neolithic period in the Balkans. It describes the construction and internal organization of the buildings. Further it is focused on the way how the buildings were used by the former society and how the individual architectural structures influenced respective population. On the basis of available resources the Neolithic houses in specific areas in the Balkans are studied, including chapters which provide the general insights into this topic.

The Neolithic settlement area Hrdlovka: analysis of ceramic material

The presented diploma thesis aims primarily to the analysis of ceramic material obtained from the Neolithic settlement area Hrdlovka excavated during salvage terrain excavation since the year 1987 to 1990. For the purposes of processing of finds and excavation situations the complex database and digitalised site plan were created in the GIS interface. The analysis of ceramics was targeted particularly to the establishing of settlement area relative chronology and separating of individual settlement phases. Current description system of Czech Neolithic pottery was modified and replenished with regard to Hrdlovka´s finding situation specifics. The process of chronological analysis comprising also spatial data was divided into several steps. Resulting sequence comprises 10 settlement horizons (Hrdlovka A - J), which correspond to nearly uninterrupted development since the early stage of the Linear Pottery culture to the late stage of the Stroked Pottery culture. Important pieces of knowledge were obtained mainly about the transitional phase between the both cultures, which was in Hrdlovka documented by two settlement horizons. The analysis of ceramics spatial distribution and some architecture characteristics are also presented in limited range.

The Longhouses of the Stroke Ornamented Pottery Culture at the Site of Hrdlovka - Liptice (Teplice District)

The present work aims to partial assessment excavation of Neolithic settlement site located on cadastres of former villages Hrdlovka-Liptice. With regard to the amount of material obtained through excavation and exposed situation, the field of interest was reduced to the StK period longhouses. The ceramic material from the filling of objects spatially associated with the house no. 3 was analysed, which enabled closer dating of the house. These findings are compared with current knowledge and views of Neolithic longhouse construction and function.

Archaeozoology of the Neolithic of Bohemia

An archaeozoological analysis of the assemblages of animal bones and teeth of Neolithic (Linear and Stroked Pottery cultures; approx. 5500-4200 BC)settlements in Bohemia, provide new elements on the way of life of early farmers. By means of study of animal bones and teeth we can specify the role of domestic and hunting animals in the Neolithic economy, define the herd management strategies for main domestic animals and focus on the environmental reconstruction and investigation of births distribution of domestic animals (for exemple of cattle in the case of this study) through the analysis of the carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of fossil tooth enamel bioapatite. To achieve these objectives, we can use, except standard archaeozoological methods and stable isotope analysis, more specific procedures, e.g. determination of damaged bones of animals using the ELISA test.

The present state of knowledge regarding the Moravian Painted Ware culture fortified settlement at Hluboké Mašůvky (Znojmo district)

Despite its special place in the awareness of the professional public and in the literature, the oft-investigated Neolitic site at Hluboké Mašůvky-"Nivky" has still not been processed as a whole. The information available come s from a range of finds reports, some published, studies bosth large and small and above all the major finds assemblage of the "Vildomec collection" and the National Museum in Prague. The field excavation methods of the pre-war period, with no detailed general plan of all the investigated features and areas, and a lack of systematic stripping within the fortified area, have resulted in imprecise information that must be reviewed. This paper takes on this challenge, employing the results of rescue excavations undertaken on the site in 2003 by the Institute for the Archaeological Heritage, Brno.
