Využití a výcvik ovčáckého psa
ZIKMUNDOVÁ, Michaela
The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the use of a dog in competitive herding, which is based on the use of a dog on the farm and to verify its ability to control the herd. Furthermore, the thesis describes the characteristics of breeds that are used for herding. The training of the monitored dog was carried out in 5 stages at 2 training centers under the guidance of experienced instructors. In the second phase, the dog passed the unofficial Natural Herding Aptitude Test (NHAT), with the rating "passed" in the Socialization section and "excellent" in the Shepherd Talent section. The training was completed by successful completion of unofficial competition with fourth place out of 12 dogs. The most commonly used dog breeds are Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, and Smooth Collie. The possibility to attend training sessions in several training areas and to consult training with more instructors has a positive effect on the overall training progress. An integral part of the overall performance of the pair is the role of the handler, who must give commands to the dog in time and correctly estimate the situation. When complications occur while training, it is not advisable to force the dog to work, as it might loose interest. At the competition that test the readiness of the dog and the handler, the handler should try to stay calm, as stressed handler might negatively affect the performance of the dog by sending wrong body signals.

Hereditary monogenic health disorders in canine breeds in relation to breeding
ORSÁKOVÁ, Kamila
This thesis deals with problematic of prevalence of single-gene disorders for various dog breeds. The goal was to discover the groups of dog breed with the highest prevalence of single-gene disorders and discover which of these disorders tends to affects most of the dog breeds. We have evaluated 23 closely related groups of dog breeds (Parkerová et al. 2017) with the appearance of some single-gene disorder as we predicted based on our analysis based on OMIA database dated to year 2018-2020. The analysis showed us that the Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) and Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRCD) affecting most of the dog breeds. We also discovered that the genetically closely related dog breed group 20T, which contains 16 dog breeds, suffers from over 49 types of single-gene disorders. We also discovered that the Border Collie is the dog breed with the highest single-gene disorder prevalence in previously mentioned group 20T. This dog breed is affected by 9 disorders at least. In our analysis the dog breed Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd are suffering from most types of single-gene disorder (more than 15). These dog breeds are one of the most common dog breeds in Czech Republic. This finding supports the hypothesis that the popular dog breeds tends to have better mapped genome and are subjects of testing more often. This thesis provides the characteristic of selected dog breeds. The genetic specifications also contains the recommended breeding method parameters for the minimization of disorders in population.

Prevention of children risk bahaviours in interactions with dogs
NÁHLÍK, Jan
Dog attacks on children are a widespread problem, which can occur when parents fail to realise a potentially dangerous interaction between a dog and a child. The aim of the study was to evaluate dogs attacks to children in Czech households, the ability of parents to identify dangerous situations from several everyday child - dog interactions, determine whether the participants connected these situations to a particular breed of dog and whether participants intend to participate in the dog bite preventing program for them and their children. Data were presented via an online survey to parents of children no more than 6 years old. Data from 208 respondents were analysed using procedure GLIMMIX in SAS program, version 9.3 and Pearson's Chi-squared test in program "R". We recorded 19 dogs attacks on children and children always knew attacking dog. Parents were present and supervised 18 children when attacks happened. Three children had to receive medical help after being attacked by a dog and one developed a post-traumatic stress disorder - a phobia of dogs. Most participants would welcome educating programs about child - dog interactions, more often those who owned a dog (p < 0,05). The probability of risk assessment varied according to dog breed (p < 0.001) as well as to the depicted situation (p < 0,001). Results indicated that Labrador Retriever was considered the least likely of the three dogs to be involved in a dangerous dog - child interaction (with 49 % predicting a dangerous interaction), followed by Parson Russell Terrier (63.2 %) and American Pit Bull Terrier (65 %). Participants considered one particular dog-child interaction named 'touching a bowl' a dangerous interaction at a high rate (77.9 %) when compared with the other presented situations, which were assessed as dangerous at rates of 48.4 % to 56.5 %. The breed of dog seems to be an influential factor when assessing a potentially dangerous outcome from a dog - child interaction. Contrary to our hypothesis, interactions involving the small dog (Parson Russell Terrier) were rated more critically, similarly to those of the American Pit Bull Terrier. These results suggest that even popular family dog breeds, such as Labrador Retrievers, should be treated with more caution.
Therapy of epilepsy in dogs and cats
Šenková, Monika ; Vokřál, Ivan (advisor) ; Lecová, Lenka (referee)
Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology Student: Monika Šenková Supervisor: PharmDr. Ivan Vokřál, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Therapy of epilepsy in dogs and cats Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting dogs and cats. This chronic disorder is manifested by recurrent epileptic seizures. The true prevalence of epilepsy in dogs and cats is unknown. It is estimated to be 0,6-0,75 % in general dog population, and 1-2 % in hospitalized dog population. There is no known estimate for general cat population, but it is estimated to be 0,5-3,5 % in hospitalized cat population. Genetic predisposition has been proved in several dog breeds, and in some breeds, it is assumed. Diagnostics of epilepsy could be often difficult, and it reflects only the symptoms described by the pet owner, therefore the close cooperation between the pet owner and the veterinarian is needed. The aims of the treatment are to decrease seizure frequency, duration, severity, and the total number of epileptic seizures that occurs with none or at least minimal adverse effects, to maximize the dog's and owner's quality of life. Currently, there is no guideline for choice of treatment and a final decision should be made on a case-by-case basis. Monotherapy is preferred...
The effect of tactile and acoustic signals on reduction of signs of stress in dogs
Murínová, Karolína ; Santariová, Milena (advisor) ; Fuchs, Roman (referee)
Being touched by the human brings up physiological and behavioral feedback in the dog which indicates touch has a calming effect. Measurements taken include noticable changes in blood pressure, heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) as well as hormonal changes - especially oxytoxin and cortisol levels. The primary objective of the fieldwork was analyzing the influence human touch has on the stressed dog and trying to bring its stress levels down using voice stimulation and a combination of voice and tactile stimuli. The dog was put into an empty room, causing elevated stress levels. After a fixed period of time the dog's owner would enter and try to calm the dog down using afromentioned treatments. The owner would then sit down on a chair and pay no more attention to the dog. The relaxing effect is being evaluated using two cardiovascular parameters, HR and HRV, and behavioural signaling. Measurements of each of the sessions are being taken three times when the dog is not moving. Phase 1 is when the dog is alone in a room, Phase 2 is taken just after the interaction with its owner has ended and Phase 3 at the end of the experiment when the dog's stress level is still. The results showed that, instead of the expected calming effect of social interaction with the owner, the effect was...
Protists in oral cavity of humans and animals.
Brixí, Kateřina ; Tachezy, Jan (advisor) ; Rada, Petr (referee)
Trichomonas tenax, Trichomonas gallinae, Trichomonas gypaetinii, Trichomonas stableri, Trichomonas equibuccalis, Trichomonas brixi, Tetratrichomonas canistomae, Tetratrichomonas felistomae and Tetratrichomonas empyemagena are unicellular eukaryotes (protists) that may occur in oral cavity of humans and domestic animals. These protozoans are mostly referred as commensals and relatively low attention is paid to them, since they usually are not primary cause of serious health problems. However, based on current knowledge, it can be concluded that more appropriate term for Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax would be an opportunistic pathogen, while Trichomonas gallinae is a primary pathogen. There are very little studies and findings about the rest of oral protozoans and their pathogenicity, therefore it is not possible to assess their significance for a host. Nevertheless, the oral protozoans should not be neglected, as in some cases they can cause serious health complications in their host.
