Wedding ceremonies in the Czech Brethren Church

The diploma thesis named Wedding ceremonies in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren aims to reflect the importance and development of wedding ceremonies in this church dating from its foundation in 1918 to the present. This thesis is based on the officially accepted liturgical forms and materials of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, namely on official agendas published in 1939, 1953 and 1983 and other published texts of this church. The thesis also explores the development of attitudes to mixed marriages from the perspective of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and offers a comparison with the attitudes of the Catholic Church. Transformations of Diakonia in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren

The thesis aims to contribute to the theoretical grounding of diakonia as the Christian-oriented practice of helping in modern society. Methodologically the author works with the social systems theory developed by Niklas Luhmann, which enables a differentiated description of the multidimensional reality of Christian helping action in its historical development and present situation. In the first part, the topic is theologically grounded ? biblically, historically and dogmatically. Then the main features of social systems theory are presented. Emphasis is placed on the dual ? primary (functional) and secondary (social) ? differentiation in society and its consequences for understanding diakonia. In this context diakonia is observed as the structural coupling of the systems of social help and Christianity and subsequently defined as helping in gospel perspective, which can be observed at micro-, meso- and macro-levels, i.e., in the context of interaction, organization and society ? and at the same time different theories must be developed for Christian helping at the individual levels. In the second part, the sociological description of the differentiation of diakonia is first confronted with theologically-oriented descriptions of differentiation in the context of Christianity and, following especially Wichern?s division of diakonia into civic, free and ecclesial, attention is focused on the ?tripod of diakonia? in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in the form of Diaconia of ECCB, Christian service and diaconate. This multi-focus view of diakonia makes it possible to reflect on its mutually irreducible layers and search for adequate theories for each of them. In the formation of the Christian dimension of the organization emphasis is placed on cultivating an adequate organization culture. Interaction has to do with the mutual ?neighborly? help within a community. The specific function of diaconate is identified in constructing bridges between the ecclesial level of Christianity and its connection with the system of social help, as well as other partial systems in society ? and in this sense it is perceived as again highly relevant. In the concluding chapter, the communication-based approach of social systems theory is correlated with the practical-theological paradigm of gospel communication. In this context diakonia is understood as an inseparable part of ?gospel communication?.

Abortion, Comparison of K.H. Peschke´sview and W. Huber´s view

The thesis deals with the topic of induced abortion. It presents views of catholic and protestant Christian ethicists by way of selected sources. A part of the thesis addresses the question of when a human life begins, next it deals with the four indications when an induced abortion is allowed, and compares the attitudes of catholic and protestant ethicists. Further, it works with the Sixth Commandment "Thou shalt not kill" and presents biblical references concerning abortion. Another part of the thesis deals with the statement of the German Evangelical Church on the German abortion law. In the conclusion of the thesis, the similarities and differences in the opinions on abortion of the two biggest Christian churches are presented.

The protestants in the region of Jindřichův Hradec from the time of the Toleration patent to the beginning of the ČCE

My thesis deals with the history of the Evangelicals in Jindřichův Hradec from the time of the issue of the Patent of Toleration to the establishment of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. The first chapter deals with the situation in Jindřichův Hradec just after the issue of the Patent of Toleration. The following chapters survey the origination and development of individual congregations and preaching stations. The aim of this thesis is to acquaint the reader with the development of evangelical religiosity in Jindřichův Hradec between 1781-1918. Children at the Lord's Supper. Theological considerations and current practice in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren

Celebration of the Lord's Supper with children. Theological assumptions and current practice in Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. Summary This thesis researches the presence and participation of children at the Lord's Supper. The main aim of the thesis was to research whether also today it is possible to find understanding for the reception of children around the Lord's Table in Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. First of all it was the issue, whether the participation of children at the Lord's Supper is sufficiently accepted in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. The first part is focused on the historical and theological background of the Lord's Supper, on the practice in the Old Testament and Apostolic times. This chapter deals with the question: What is the Lord's Supper and what is its meaning? The second part is devoted to the issue of children and their participation in the Lord's Supper. It focuses on the period from the Early Church through the Middle Ages to the Czech and World Reformation. Different views of churches in the Czech Republic are described in the third part of the thesis. I focus here mainly on their current practice. Attitudes of the ECCB members towards current social moral issues

In my diploma thesis, I deal with five socio-moral topics and with the attitudes of members of The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB) towards them. These topics are: 1) Marriage and family 2) Homosexuality 3) Ethnical minorities 4) Dispute over the legacy of communism 5) Refugees and immigrants. First part of the thesis is dedicated to the official statements of the synod and the Synodal Council. Furthermore, this chapter reveals the process leading to adopting these positions. This rather descriptive part is followed by a sociological survey of opinions on the issues, mentioned above, held by members of ECCB. The aim of the survey is to figure out, whether these opinions are in agreement with the official statements. The final chapter is dedicated to data evaluation. The main goal of my diploma thesis is to find out what issues are for ECCB members easy to agree on and in which cases are the opinions rather individualized. The Bequest of the Unity of the Brethren in the Lore and Practice of the Contemporary Protestant Churches in the Czech Republic

This theses researches the bequest of The Unity of the Brethren in the lore and practice of the contemporary protestant churches in the Czech Republic. The first part evaluates numerous sources to concretize the bequest of The Unity of Brethren to ten points, which represent the most specific characteristics of its lore. The second part focuses on comparison of the previously specified bequest of The Unity of Brethren with practice and lore of particular contemporary churches. Through analysis of church sources and structured interviews with the heads of contemporary churches the thesis shows which points of the bequest of The Unity of Brethren actually appear in the lore of the examined churches and to what extend these points influence the real life of the communities. The main objective of the thesis is to examine whether the rich Brethren tradition can be found in today's Czech churches. Moreover this work also asks to what extend these churches manage to keep the Brethren bequest alive in the modern social environment.

Repatriation of Czech White Mountain Battle exiles from Poland to Bezdružice after the Second World War

This graduation thesis talks about returning emigrants who left in the middle of the eighteen century because of then forbidden evangelical denomination into Prussia, and about their return back to the motherland. First chapters talk about the consequences of the White Mountain Battle in 1620 for non-Catholics, their move into foreign land and general religious situations in Czech countries during the eighteen century. Other chapters of this thesis describe the life of non-Catholics in foreign land and the rise of major Czech colonies in today's Poland. The major portion of this work describes, based on memories of the eye witnesses, the return of emigrants from the Polish Tábor into then Czech and Slovak Republic after WWII and their new beginnings in the home land, specifically in villages Zhořec, Kamýk, Pačín and Loučky in the Bezdružice region. This thesis talks about original german inhabitants too and their transfer to Germany. Here it is described, assignment of farmsteads and land to returning emigrants, elections in the village of Zhořec, in which some of the candidates were new emigrants, the coming into existence of local division of the Board of Czech Exiles in Zhořec. The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in Democratic Revolution 1989

The aim of the thesis is an analysis of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB) in the democratic revolution 1989. The main questions the author asks are what did the democratic revolution mean for ECCB and how did the ECCB respond to this, how did the ECCB evolve in the first year of the liberal democratic system and how did the ECCB put up with the communist past. Method of thesis is historical analysis. This method is critical evaluation of archival sources, which are articles in the evangelical journals from this era and secondary literature. Publications used to indicate context deal with democratic revolution 1989 chart the history of the ECCB in 1948-1989 and value this period by members of the ECCB themselves. Democratic revolution gave the ECCB not only the freedom, but the oportunity to evaluate recent past, as well. The splitting-up of the church, roots of which were deep in times of nondemocratic system, grew up, due to different approach to this affair in the ECCB. Josef Hromádka, synod senior and deputy chairman in the Government of National Understanding, played a specific role in the discussion of the ECCB.
