Between dream, play and reality: the Alfred Kubin's novel "Die andere Seite" and its Czech translation

The Russian Translations of A Clockwork Orange
Václavová, Andrea ; Hlaváček, Antonín (advisor) ; Hříbková, Radka (referee)
The diploma thesis "Russian translations of A. Burgess' novel lA Clockwork Orange" deals with the question of translation of Russian words used in the book written in English into Russian. It also deals with the problem whether the former aesthetic value of the original is being preserved in the translated works as well. You will discover linguistic and literary analyses of the original version and its three Russian translations (which were published in Russia under the title 'Заводной апельсин') and a comparison of them. The Sinélščikov's translation seems to be the most successful at the first sight. He translates the Russian expressions used in English by English and American words. But only if you read the whole book you will find out that he slightly changes the original plot and thus he also shifts the meaning of the novel. In other words he does not preserve the original aesthetic value of Burgess' work. In comparison, Nëtësovova's translation is the most successful of all as for the maintenance of artistic value of the book. Paradoxically, the most often published Bošnjak's translation is excessively vulgar and it is the less imaginative translation of all. His translation does not give the reader the possibility to get known or to understand the meaning of Burgess' literary work. Powered by TCPDF...

Fantasy and Science-fiction in Novels for Children using German Texts, Working with a Literary Text with Children for Teaching
Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

The Novel of Central Europe The Green Virgin by Bernhard Setzwein

Decline of southern aristocracy in the selected novels of William Faulkner
Mackal, Jan ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
The main aim of this thesis is to analyze the decline of the so-called Southern aristocracy in two selected novels by William Faulkner, namely Absalom, Absalom! and The Sound and the Fury. Their protagonists are members of rich planter family in the first case, or, as in the second case, descendants of such a family. They all inhabit Faulkner's fictitious Yoknapatawpha County and are considered Southern aristocrats by their fellow citizens. Yet they are not living the life of leisure and luxury often ascribed to people of their rank but facing their own decline instead. In both novels, the nature of this decline is both materialistic and spiritual; the latter being the beginning of the former. The decline of Southern aristocracy is primarily seen as a conflict of two sets of values or, in other words, as a struggle between the "Old South" and the "New South." Therefore the main cause of this decline is seen in the enormous dependence on the past, which goes hand in hand with the notion of the myth of the antebellum South. The first two chapters of this thesis constitute a theoretical introduction for the subsequent analyses of the novels, for they discuss the key concepts associated with the South; namely the myth of the Old South in comparison with the actual historical development, and the notion...

A cycle about love written by Princess Alexandra of Dietrichstein, married Countess Schouwaloff: German Love, Italian Love, Russian Love, Swiss Love.
MUSILOVÁ, Martina
The bachelor thesis focuses on selected literary pieces written in French by Alexandrine Schouwaloff, married Dietrichstein (1775-1847), a noblewoman of Russian descent. The handwritten works survived in Dietrichstein´s Family Archives in the Moravian Land Archives in Brno. The first part of the thesis concentrates on life of the countess. I have felt the necessity of describing the turn of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth century, its cultural milieu where the writer lived as well as her background and later life when she wrote her books. The following part presents the author's writings of literary and personal nature. The love cycle contains four novellas - German Love, Italian Love, Russian Love, Swiss Love - which are analyzed based on genre, themes and narrative. The analysis and interpretation of selected excerpts reveal the applied linguistic method and its function in the text. The objective of my thesis is to introduce the writer as an unknown artist, integrate her within the literary and historical framework of her period and reveal at least a small part of her unpublished literary heritage.

"Gâtée par le monde." Princess Alexandra of Dietrichstein's literary oeuvre
MUSILOVÁ, Martina
The thesis deals with a handwritten literary oeuvre by Francophone noblewoman Alexandra of Dietrichstein, born Shuvalov, which represents, by its extent, the unique case for the Bohemian lands. In what follows we interpret Princess Alexandra of Dietrichstein's political, religious, social and her literary opinions as well as her conception of sentiment and love on the basis of nine literary texts. Each of them represents a different genre there are short stories, novellas, novels and an educational treatise. Furthermore, her work originated within Francophone aristocratic culture in the Romantic period. Primarily, we focus on the development of the Francophone culture in Russia. Thanks to methods of cultural history and literary analysis of aesthetic norms we were able to demonstrate how her literary work developed over time in terms of ethics and aesthetics and point at the influence of the political and cultural changes in the period called in the Bohemian lands "in between times".

After the disaster – the serialized pulp novel as a craft and an expression of internal dialogue. Morana or The world and its nothingness
Janoušek, Pavel
The author analyses the prose work Morana čili Svět a jeho nicoty (Morana or The World and its Nothingness) which Karel Sabina published in 1874 under the pseudonym Arian Želinský, as an expression of his personal, philosophical and above all literary reaction to the “national court”, which unmasked him as a police agent and turned him into an excommunicated “traitor to the nation”. The objective here is to establish the manner in which Sabina reflected his private fall from grace in his literary testimony, working inter alia with the flood motif, which was inspired by the disastrous floods of May 1872, i.e. the way he reflected his internal discord in the external form of a conventional serialized pulp novel with an aristocratic setting, with mordant dialogue between various life truths.
