Computer graphics flow visualization methods
Častulíková, Veronika ; Štefan, David (referee) ; Urban, Ondřej (advisor)
Flow visualization is one of the important topics in the scientific visualization, which is a subject of ongoing research. Data obtained by numerical simulations are further analysed to gain a better understanding of fluid flow. With the rapid development of computational simulations, demand for more advanced visualization methods has grown. Basic overview and a detailed description of the fluid flow visualization techniques is introduced in the bachelor thesis. Afterwards, the techniques are applied on data obtained by CFD simulation of a vortex rope in the draft tube swirl generator.
Transparent packing for optical experiments in Rotating packed beds
Hájek, Jiří ; Elcner, Jakub (referee) ; Malý, Milan (advisor)
Given the amount of energy and industrial processes that produce carbon dioxide, it is necessary to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. One option is to capture and store the carbon dioxide produced, called CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage). For effective capture, a rotating packed bed absorber can be used, which works on a similar principle to a static absorption column, but the driving force of the liquid is not gravity but centrifugal force. This allows the device to be very compact in size. To optimise the absorption process, it is necessary to analyse the nature of the flow inside the absorber. This work focuses on the design and testing of a unique packed bed with stainless steel wire filling and transparent plexiglass support parts for optical analysis of the internal flow. Using a high-speed camera, the nature of the fluid flow was recorded under different operating modes. The changed parameters were the operating speed, which ranged from 300 to 1,800 rpm, and the velocity of the fluid flow, ranging from 1.25 to 11.5 m/s. When evaluating the nature of the flow, attention was paid mainly to the inner part of the packing fill, where the droplet size and velocity change the most. However, the assessment of the flow across the entire packing was also evaluated. Recommendations for the choice of operating modes, evaluation of droplet size and, finally, the empirical correlation for the calculation of the absolute liquid velocity at the inner part of the packing is also discussed.
Interesting cases of fluid mechanics
Čáp, Filip ; Hájek, Ondřej (referee) ; Jedelský, Jan (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with the description of some interesting phenomena in the field of fluid mechanics, methods of flow visualization and its recording using a high-speed camera. First, a number of terms and different types of fluid flow are briefly introduced, which is followed by the description of the methods of visualization that enhance the visibility of flow of liquids and gases. The thesis also describes high-speed cameras and examines some interesting effects in fluid dynamics which can be encountered in everyday life as well as in engineering practice. The last chapter is then dedicated to the conducted experiments and their recordings.

Visualization of particle motions in superfluid helium flows
Švančara, Patrik ; La Mantia, Marco (advisor)
Flows of normal and superfluid 4 He (He I and He II, respectively) are investigated experimentally. Relatively small particles of solid hydrogen and deuterium are suspended in the experimental volume and their motions are tracked in both mechanically and thermally driven flows. A statistical study of the particle velocity and velocity increment distributions is performed at scales smaller and larger than the mean distance between quantized vortices, the quantum length scale of the investigated flows. We show that, at small scales, the observed particle dynamics in He II is greatly influenced by that of quantized vortices. We, additionally, report that this behavior is independent of the imposed large-scale flow. Instead, at large scales, we observe that particle motions are quasiclassical, that is, very similar to those reported to occur in turbulent flows of viscous fluids. The study reinforces therefore the idea of close similarity between viscous flows and large-scale (mechanically-driven) flows of He II, and simultaneously highlights the small-scale differences due to the presence of quantized vortices in He II.
Study of vortical structures generated by a swirl generator
Kurková, Michaela ; Pochylý, František (referee) ; Urban, Ondřej (advisor)
This bachelor’s thesis deals with the study of vortical structures generated by a swirl generator. The theoretical part is focused on the description of experimental and numerical studies of the vortex rope phenomenon. This part also includes a brief overview of vortex identification methods. The second part is dedicated to the study of vortical structures captured by CFD simulations. The vortex identification methods are compared on an example of the vortex rope.

Visualization of superfluid helium flows in the proximity of boundaries
Hrubcová, Petra ; La Mantia, Marco (advisor) ; Jackson, Martin James (referee)
The investigation of superfluid helium (He II) flows is an active and challenging research field. Progress in our phenomenological understanding of the underlying physics has been achieved in recent years by employing flow visualization techniques that allow following the motion of relatively small particles suspended in the fluid. The flow-induced particle behaviour is studied in the case of thermal counterflow - the most common type of He II flow - close to the flow source, where a significant vorticity enhancement is observed. The work aim is therefore to give a significant contribution to the emerging line of scientific enquiry dedicated to the study of wall-bounded quantum flows.
