Educational game for teaching cartography
Zýma, Marek ; Havelková, Lenka (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The presented thesis focuses on the creation of an educational game, as a mean for teaching cartography in lower secondary education. The game serves as a tool for preventing a formation of misconceptions related to cartography and for developing map skills of pupils in lower secondary schools The bachelor thesis also includes a review of literature focused on teaching cartography on lower secondary education, especially focused on cartography in curricular documents, map skills and misconceptions in cartography. Moreover, an integral part of the thesis is the methodology of creating the educational game specialized in cartography teaching and thorough description of the individual components of the game.
Map skills development in geography lessons
Štolcová, Kristýna ; Hanus, Martin (advisor) ; Fikarová, Veronika (referee)
Presented diploma thesis describes the process of map skills development in educational reality. The key element of the thesis composes of teaching reality examination, which has not been explored in connection to map skills before. The reality examination allows us to document current situation in map skills development and to implement possible changes into the process. The main aim of this thesis is to describe various teaching approaches to map skill development in practical use, all documented by video recording which is the main method used for this thesis. Theoretical part defines the term of map skills and their descriptions as well as the personal approach to teaching and its impact on the educational process. The personal approach to teaching is in practice performed by the selection of teaching method and forms which are also discused in this thesis. The practical section of the thesis is dedicated to examination of the cognitive difficultness of tasks assigned by teacher, using the video as a method of the research which eliminates possible misinterpretation. Assigned tasks are classified to several map skill types and based on the data colection further classification of 3 main teacher types is performed. Part of the thesis is also dedicated to comparison of cognitive difficultness of...
The utilization of the School world atlas in interdisciplinary topics
Škvorová, Tereza ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Hanus, Martin (referee)
This bachelor work is focused on secondary-school interdisciplinary topics and their tuition with making use of School world atlas. A part of this work is analysis of interdisciplinary topics from General National Curriculum Frameworks for ecodary schools particularly out of geographical view and its comparison with selected foreign curriculum documents. The work also reminds the importance of cartographic skills, their development in the course of studies and their necessity for the correct working with School Atlas of the World. Utilization of School world atlas itself during classes and teaching the interdisciplinary topics is given on various examples. For each interdisciplinary topic there is one selected thematic circle with presentation of factual real assignments which can be applied during lessons and can help to inspire teachers. Key words: school world atlas, interdisciplinary topics, secondary school, map skills
Map use according to the students' level of mathematical skills
Švubová, Kateřina ; Hanus, Martin (advisor) ; Řezníčková, Dana (referee)
The presented diploma thesis belongs to studies that deals with map skills. This thesis focuses on thematic maps - namely the choropleth map and proportional symbol map - and research correlation between map skills and mathematical skills. The main aim is to research correlation between these two variables using didactic test. This thesis also researches the effect of success in a given mathematical skill in the mathematical part of the test on success rate in questions that examine that skill in the map part of the test. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the mathematical skills that are needed while working with maps were defined and analysed. Given that various mathematical skills are needed while working with various cartographic expression methods, detailed list of these skill has been developed for the four most widely used cartographic methods - flow map, area class map, choropleth map and proportional symbol map. The main part of the thesis is devoted to general testing of map and mathematical skills among pupils in the ninth grade of elementary schools and corresponding class of grammar schools. In the first part the test verified reading, analysing and interpretation of choropleth map and proportional symbol map, in the second part the mathematical skills used while working with these...
Reading and analysing of old and contemporary maps by students of elementary and grammar schools
Gallus, Adam ; Hanus, Martin (advisor) ; Burda, Tomáš (referee)
The main goal of the thesis is to answer whether an ability to use maps in different ways is affected by one or more criteria specified by the author. The author has decided to test abilities of fifteen-year-old pupils to work in different ways with actual and old maps. The thesis examines possible impact of type of the school, gender, school marks achieved in History and Geography lessons, and previous experience with using maps. Before the practical part of the thesis was executed the theoretical part of the thesis had been dealt with. Different map skills were specified and characterized. Maps which the author had chosen to use for the purpose of the thesis were thoroughly described and particular odds of work with old maps were emphasised. For the purpose of the research part of the thesis the author developed a didactic test. At pilot testing a sample of 34 pupils completed the test to verify it is suitable for the thesis purpose and it meets all requirements for scientific research. At the second stage of the practical part of the research a group of 125 pupils from two different types of school completed the test. After the practical part of the thesis the author rigorously analysed completed tests and discussed whether the abilities to use maps seem to be affected by some criteria that had...
The impact of the cartographic method on students' map skills level
Havelková, Lenka ; Hanus, Martin (advisor) ; Bláha, Jan Daniel (referee)
The presented diploma thesis focuses on the map skills' problematic, which is currently becoming widespread in the Czech research environment. In contrast to the previous empirical studies, this thesis is devoted to the thematic map skills and their level of development among students of grammar schools and geographically oriented branches of university studies. Due to the significant differences between used cartographic methods of visualization on thematic maps the main aim of this diploma thesis is to identify and explain used cartographic method's influence on the level of these important skills. To achieve this aim, it was necessary to focus on different parts of the curriculum (intended, implemented, learned) and to use several scientific methods because this topic hasn't been well established yet and therefore only few theoretical and empirical studies dealt with this specific issue. Firstly, the review of literature focused on thematic cartography, map skills and on identifying their level of development among students was done. Due to the lack of specialized resources the model of thematic map skills was created. This specific model was further used during didactic test's designing and also for its results' interpretation. Similarly for the creation of appropriate didactic test -...
