The role of private security companies in conflict resolution in Africa

This thesis concentrates on the topic of private military companies in the relation to their activities within conflict resolution in four selected African countries - Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Côte D'Ivoire. The main goal of this thesis is to chart their activities in three areas - within peacekeeping operations, in peacebuilding and within the efforts to maintain stability - and by comparison of collected data for each case study evaluate within which phase of conflict resolution they operate most frequently. At the same time the attempt of this thesis is to identify services that are desired most during conflict resolution process in Africa and examine the possibility that private military companies came through some changes since 1990. In order to gain relevant data for the comparison, technical texts and collected data analysis is being carried out. The role of private security companies in peace-building in Africa

This thesis concentrates on the topic of private military and security companies in the relation to their activities within peacebuilding efforts in three african countries - Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria. The main goal of this thesis is to chart their activities in these countries and evaluate the level of their influence on the quality of the security, and to draw the attention to risks related to their engagement. This paper postulates the thesis that after proper regulation of their activities, private military and security companies could play an important role in peacebuilding in Africa. This thesis tries to vindicate this claim by technical texts analysing along with collected data. Furthermore, this thesis evaluates the state of current research in this area and look on the opinions of specialists on the engagement of private military and security companies in peacebuilding efforts. The role of international community in the post-conflict reconstruction and development of Afghanistan during the transition period

Security, economic and societal challenges of the 21 century place demands on international community and deepens the need to precisely define this term and its role in the global development as well as the legitimacy of international organization, which often place themselves as representatives of the entire global community. Conflict in Afghanistan and its reconstruction is a great case study of mechanisms, which allow the international community to assess security challenges, apply former experience to respond and prepare for future operations. There are many lessons that can be learned from the case of Afghanistan. This article addresses the successes and failures connected with Afghan reconstruction and stabilization efforts and its impacts on development of the country. The article stresses the negative consequences of the international involvement as well as the deepening dependence of Afghanistan on foreign assistance.
Comparison and evaluation of the post-war reconstruction in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the post-war reconstruction in Wester European countries after the Second World War

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe historical development of the process of post-war reconstruction. This will be achieved by comparing two examples. One of them is process of post-war reconstruction in countries of Western Europe after the Second World War and the other is process of post-war reconstruction in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the civil war that ended in 1995. Importance of this topic is underlined by an increasing number of low-intensity conflicts. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate reasons of the success of the process of post-war reconstruction in Germany and failure in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This thesis contains a view on forming and development of post-war reconstruction. Later on the situation in countries of Western Europe after the Second World War is described, followed by an evaluation of this process in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the end these two processes are compared. This work contains a historical context and geopolitical and strategic importance of the chosen countries. Supervisor of bachelor thesis: doc. Ing.
