Leaching characterization of platinum group elements from automotive catalytic converters

The distribution of platinum group elements and increase of thein emissions in the environment are mostly related to the use of automobile catalyst. The antropogenic emissions of these noble metals accumulate aloung the roads. The methods such as ICP-OES and XRD were used for determinativ of phase and elemental composition of these samples. The matrix of the gasoline catalyst is composed of Al, Ce oxides with Pt-Pd-Rh coatings. Matrix of diesel catalyst is composed of cordierite with Pt coatings. ICP-MS was used for determination Pt, Pd and Rh. Before the analysis was performed such as pre-concetration fire assay fusion into a NiS button. The leaching characterization of Pt, Pd and Rh was examined during kinetic batch experiments in sodium chloride (1g/l, NaCl), 20 mM Na2P4O7 (NaPyr), fulvic acid (FK, DOC 50 mg/L) and 20 mM citric acid . The results show, that the dissolution of Pt and Pd is the fastest in citric acid and sodium pyrophosphate. Sodium chloride in the concentrations employed, which could be derived from melt waters formed during winter road treatment, does not have a substantiv impal on the speciation and mobilization of Pt and Pd. Organic acid does not have significantly impct on the release of Pt and Pd to the solution. The calculated normalized bulk released NRi values in the range 0,16...
Air quality monitoring in areas with high traffic load

Emissions of pollutants are one of the most serious problems of transportation, particularly as a result of a significant risk to human health. The causes of emissions of pollutants to ambient air are the exhaust gases generated by the combustion of fuel in motor vehicles. They are complex mixtures containing hundreds of chemical substances at different concentrations contributing to long-term warming of the atmosphere, the so-called "greenhouse effect" or often with toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic properties for humans. The presented methodology was developed within project TE01020168 - Center for effective and sustainable transport infrastructure (CESTI) with the financial support of the Technological Agency of the Czech Republic within the Competence Centres Programme. Its aim is to unify the procedures for the implementation and evaluation of air quality monitoring in order to provide objective information on the actual status and development of air quality in areas with intensive transport. It summarizes the legislatively defined requirements for air quality monitoring and at the same time defines the pollutants whose very important source is transport and which should be monitored when assessing the impact of transport on air quality: nitrogen dioxide, (nano)particles, benzene, or platinum group elements and benzo[a]pyrene. The methodology can be used by the Ministry of Transport, road owners or their managers (ŘSD, regions and municipalities) as an effective tool for controlling both long-term monitoring and indicative measurements of air quality in the vicinity of roadways. At the same time, it will find application to metering processors and organizations providing their own air quality measurement to provide a standardized procedure to ensure a precise air quality assessment based on real data. The methodology will also help to deepen the knowledge of the staff of all the mentioned institutions and provide a standardized procedure for which, for example, contracting authorities may refer to public procurement.

Nanoparticles of platinum metals in the environment

Platinum nanoparticles, mainly released from automotive catalysts, pose a potential risk to the environment. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate the effect of platinum nanoparticles on soil properties at different humidities. Specifically, how nanoparticles affect the stability of hydrogen bridges, the stability of aliphatic crystals, and water retention in soil. For the analysis of relations between platinum nanoparticles, water and soil, a method of thermal analysis was used, namely differential scanning calorimetry. The theoretical part is devoted to the general introduction to platinum metals and nanoparticles. And the preparation of nanoparticles, their characterization and their properties. The result of the experiments is that platinum nanoparticles affect the soil properties relatively significantly.
Study of contamination of river sediments with platinum metals

This work deals with the characteristics of platinum metals and problems related to their toxicity and mobility in the environment, especially in the aquatic environment. These metals are released into the environment due to the use of automotive catalysts. Their function is based on the catalytic properties of platinum metals. Because of the high temperatures, these metals can be oxidized in the catalyst and subsequently emitted together with the combustion products into the surrounding atmosphere. The aim of the thesis is to measure real samples of river sediments of the river Svratka on the territory of the city of Brno and to find the possibility of contamination of the aquatic environment with these metals.
Application of electrochemical methods for the determination of platinum metals

This bachelor thesis deals with the optimization of platinum determination conditions using electrochemical methods, namely voltammetric analysis. The theoretical part describes the physical and chemical properties of platinum and platinum group metals, their occurrence and their use. The theoretical part also deals with the toxicity of platinum group metals and their environmental cycles. Finally, other possible methods of determination are mentioned, including a detailed description of the voltammetric analysis. The experimental part describes the process of optimization of the conditions of voltammetric analysis of platinum and the application of the optimised method on real samples.

Determination of Pt metals in environmental samples

Platinum group elements are increasingly used in various industries, and that generates their occurrence in many parts of the environment, including biota. The interest of scientists is currently focused on studying the behavior of Pt metals in the ecosystem because of the potential health risks of Pt metal compounds. There are used various techniques for this purpose, including analytical methods. This bachelor thesis deals with properties of PGE, their appearance and behavior in the environment. Geochemistry of upper mantle rocks from Mohelno-Biskoupky locality

Peridotites occuring in orogenic massifs provide important insights into geochemical processes of the Earth's upper mantle by providing direct evidence of mantle evolution throughout Earth history. It has been previously demostrated (e.g. Medaris et al., 1990, 2005) that the uppermost tectonic unit of the Bohemian Massif - the Gföhl Nappe hosts a variety of peridotites that originated from different sources, including subcontinental lithosphere, suboceanic asthenosphere, and possible ultramafic layered intrusive complex. The Czech peridotites of the Gföhl Nappe has been divided into three groups, defined by Medaris et al. (1999), according to their chemical compositions, identity and relations of the aluminous phases, ortopyroxen compositions and estimated P-T conditions. According to Medaris et al. (2005) "Type I" peridotites - represented by Mohelno and Biskoupky bodies - equilibrated in low P-T regime (recording the highest equilibration temperatures - up to 1335 ⁰C at 29 kbar - among the Gföhl peridotites) consist of spinel peridotite with garnet appearing only at its margins. The use of ion exchanges for preconcentration of platinum group metals

The aim of this thesis is the elaboration of a detailed literature review on the use of ion exchangers for the preconcentration of platinum group metals. This work contains an actual literature review on this issue. In this work you will find information about the current occurrence of platinum metals in the environment, their impact on health, properties, resources and the use. There are also described ways of decomposition, extraction and use of ion exchangers. In the experimental part this thesis deals with optimization of ion exchangers and following application of real samples from the city of Brno.
Use of biomarkers for assessing environmental pollution by platinum group metals

This diploma thesis in the theoretical part analyses the characteristic feature of individual platinum group elements, their toxicity, anthropogenic sources and the presence of platinum group elements in the environment of the Czech Republic. In addition, there are specified types of bioindicators focusing mainly on lichens, mosses and needles. There are described individual bioindication techniques and pre-treatment of samples for platinum metals determination in bioindicators. The subject of the experimental part is to verify the sorption efficiency and ability of platinum and palladium using the SPE method and to determine the actual platinum metal contamination in selected localities in the city of Brno. There was also the additionally subject to verify the sorption potential of selected bioindicators and determination of the environmental pollution by platinum metals using the bag technique. In the experimental part, the bioindicators of moss Pleurozium schreberi, lichen Xanthoria parietina, lichen Flavoparmelia caperata and needles Pinus nigra were used.
