Do National Hockey League Players Perform Better During Their Contract Years?
Liehman, Jan ; Opatrný, Matěj (advisor) ; Janhuba, Radek (referee)
This thesis analyses the validity of the contract year phenomenon in the Na- tional Hockey League (NHL). This notion, that players increase their perfor- mance in the final year of their contract, has been supported by previous find- ings in baseball and basketball, but ice hockey has been largely overlooked thus far. This thesis further extends the analysis to the second-to-last year on players' contract and distinguishes between unrestricted and restricted free agents. Rigorous analysis of the NHL contract structure is employed to elimi- nate contract states that would bias the results. By using a within-player fixed effects model in combination with advanced performance metrics, it arrives at an unexpected conclusion that upcoming unrestricted free agents improve their performance in the second-to-last year of their contract, but there is not enough evidence to suggest that they improve in the final one. No performance increase was found for upcoming restricted free agents during the final two years of their contract. Title: Migration of Czech ice hockey players to North America. Objectives: The main objective of this diploma thesis is to evaluate the current development of migration of Czech ice hockey players to North American highest competition - NHL since 1990. The sub-objective of this thesis is to investigate migration factors, then to describe historical developments within migration and to compare with other ice hockey powers. Further analysing the influence of Czech ice hockey players on the performance of teams in North American competitions, as well as introducing leagues themselves. Methods: This thesis used qualitative research which abnormally consists of a questionnaire survey and precedes quantitative research, which includes deskresearch, a method which is also referred to as secondary data analysis, data are mainly drawn from the outputs of mass media and virtual data for this work. Next method of comparison and correlation analysis. Hereinafter the comparation method and correlation analysis are used. Results: This study reveals the importance of focusing on the experiences of the migrants themselves as well as on the factors related to migration. They exist not only in professional field, but also in personal life. All this affects the overall adaptation process. The most motivating factor...

Title: Czechs and Slovaks in the first season of the second century of NHL Abstract The theme od the thesis are Czechs and Slovaks in the first season of the second century of NHL. The main aim of my work is to analyze the course of the season 2017-2018. In my work I will focus on the Czech and Slovak players and their comparison with players from the other European countries and with USA and Canada ice hockey superpowers. The comparison will be focused on the number of players, Canadian points, players' productivity in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, their average age, and the players' age versus productivity. I will also focus on the team statistics (representation of Czechs, Slovaks and Europeans in each team). Key words Ice hockey, NHL, ice hockey players, Czechs, Slovaks, Europeans, goals, points

Conditional abilities of Czech ice hockey players in NHL according to the Wingate test
Janek, Michael ; Heller, Jan (advisor) ; Vojta, Zdeněk (referee)
Title: Conditional abilities of Czech ice hockey players in NHL according to the anaerobic Wingate test Aims: The aim of this thesis was to find out and evaluate the level of anaerobic readiness of selected Czech forwards and defenders playing in NHL between 2001/2002 and 2015/2016 seasons. The evaluation was based on comparison of the results in Wingate test of the research groups and specified standards of the first league (ELH) players. The other purpose was to find out whether there are differences between the results of the forwards and defenders. Methods: There were used the research methods of quantitative analysis including effect size. Research sample consists of the group of 26 forwards (mean age = 20.5 ± 4.4) and the group of 16 defenders (mean age = 23.2 ± 4.5) who have played in NHL. Results of the main parameters, i.e. peak power output, peak power relative to 1 kg of body mass, anaerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity relative to 1 kg of body mass, of the 30 s anaerobic Wingate were used. The data were collected from database of Faculty of PE and sport, Charles University in Prague and confronted with the first league ELH standards from the longitudinal research (Heller, Vodička 2014). The comparison was based on the mean values and dispersion of performances, effect sizes were...
Determinants defining pay of NHL players
Sigmund, Pavel ; Chytilová, Helena (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The thesis is focused on examination of various determinants having effect upon National Hockey League players´ pay. It also aims at the role of players´ individual skills, personality as well as characteristic of each club. I have decided to test pay determination on the base of Jones and Walsh model (1988), which uses a set of specific variables and is formed and tested for each post (goalkeeper, defender, forward). I enriched the model with other variables (market value of the club, annual profit, average price of a ticket). The empiric part contains regression analysis (OLS) of data sets of all players - newcomers in season 2015/16. Skill and experience of the players are the most relevant factors of the model. The influence of team characteristic appeared to be (compared to the previous research) statistically less significant (close to 0). Pay discrimination of European NHL players against the ones from North America was not proved. In spite of the supposition positive effect of European origin on players´ pay emerged.
Marketing of NHL in 2005-2015
Kadeřábek, Jan ; Halada, Jan (advisor) ; Šesták, Zdeněk (referee)
This thesis is focused on marketing of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2005 to 2015. The NHL, having been founded in 1917, is the oldest and most famous ice hockey competition in the world. The aim of the study is to investigate the role and the impact of marketing and its techniques on the NHL. I start with 2005 because the then season was completely cancelled due to disagreements among players and owners of the clubs. It is considered to be a turning point in the history of the NHL since a salary cap has been introduced and clubs could spent limited amount of money on players. The main attention of the thesis is directed at single marketing activities of the league - television broadcasting, outdoor games, sponsors, All-Star Games, lockouts, the salary cap and revenues. Considerable space is devoted to comparison with the biggest competitors of the NHL on the North American sport market. The findings from the research show that management of the league uses marketing and its tools very extensively. Marketing helps the NHL to fulfil its plans, bring new fans and attract lucrative sponsors. The study concludes with a prediction what the future will bring to the league. An extension of the NHL into new markets in Las Vegas and Quebec is set to happen together with growing revenues.

The role of molecular genetic and cytogenetic analyses in the diagnosis and prediction of treatment response in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphomas
Berková, Adéla ; Zemanová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Goetz, Petr (referee) ; Smolej, Lukáš (referee)
Malignant lymphoproliferative disorders include highly heterogeneous entities, i.e. lymphomas (Non-Hodgkin - NHL, as well Hodgkin's lymphoma), lymphoid leukemias, multiple myeloma and others. As currently many chromosomal aberrations with diagnostic and prognostic significance are known, molecular cytogenetic analyses of tumor cell genome has become a substantial examination also in lymphoproliferative disorders. This thesis focuses primarily on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), which is one of the mature B-cell neoplasms and represents the most common type of leukemia. We analyzed four most frequently found aberrations (13q14 deletion, ATM and TP53 gene deletion, and trisomy 12) by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and also IgH gene aberrations in some patients. We compared the findings with other factors and clinical characteristics. This work shows that the conventional G-banding is analysis relatively little relevant. FISH was more effective in detecting aberrations in CLL. Although none of the four aforementioned changes is specific to CLL, the prognostic impact is significant, particularly that of TP53 deletion. Next, detection of some IgH gene translocations is essential in differential diagnosis of CLL and other NHL (follicular, mantle cell, diffuse large B cell, Burkitt's...
