A purpose of this paper is to point out some current problems related with wave concepts and quantitative AE source identification. Main tasks concerning AE detection, localization and source identification are discussed and their advances during the last ten years are mentioned.

Tested materials (polypropylene and its blends with polyethylene and other additives) exhibit large localized plastic deformation or necking, reaching hundreds of percent before failure. Image analysis procedure based on displacement of contrast markers on the surface has been usedto quantitatively evaluate axial and lateral strains and strain rates along the sample.
Threshold counting in wavelet domain

New AE signal parameters (wavelet counts) are introduced using atwo-level threshold counting of wavelet coefficients. The application of wavelet counts is illustrated in three examples of both real and simulated AE data. The significance of various classicaland newly introduced AE signal parameters used to AE source identification is tested using theneural network sensitivity and factor analyses.
