Representing mountain landscapes in English travel literature of the 18th century in comparative perspective
Štětka, Ondřej ; Daniel, Ondřej (advisor) ; Power, Martina (referee)
This thesis deals with the image of mountains, mountain landscape and nature in selected English travelogues of the eighteenth century describing journeys to four different areas - the Alpine region, the Scottish Highlands, the Irish mountain ranges and Wales. These destinations are looked at as distinct cognitive frameworks or social contexts for perception of the same or similar - i.e., mountainous - type of landscape. The aim of the thesis is to identify, present and explain the similarities and differences in the description and evaluation of such landscape between the areas, i.e., contexts. The main part of the text consists of five chapters: the first four are each focused on one of the above-mentioned destinations and presents the main trends in the description of the local mountain landscape mentioned in the analyzed travelogues about the area. In the last chapter, based on the comparison of the findings on the perception of each of the destinations, the main similarities and differences in the description and evaluation of the mountain landscape between these regions - i.e., various frameworks - are presented and explained. Key words Mountains, landscape, space, nature, travelogues, travellers, Great Britain, 18th century.

Analysing contrasting representations of folklore in the Czech Republic through the lens of participatory movements of traditional music
Perrenoud, Zoé Mathilda ; Power, Martina (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Matěj (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
This paper combines theoretical questions with empirical research to bring to light the vitality of folk processes in the urban modern world. The fieldwork focuses on participatory forms of traditional music. With the help of the interviews I conducted, this paper seeks (to explain) the participants' motivations for their enactment of folklore. We analyse the musicians' motivations, as well as the functions their practice of folklore fulfils, while putting the emphasis on the living dynamic and transformative creative processes of tradition. We concentrate more on the functions and forms of their enactment of folklore rather than on the aesthetic material or folklore itself. What needs do participatory forms of folklore express, especially in our urban modern world? KEYWORDS: Folklore, ethnomusicology, anthropology of music, tradition, authenticity
Perception of political boundaries and their role in the division of geographical space: the Irish-British and Bohemian-German boundaries between 1750 and 1850

Perception of political boundaries and their role in the division of geographical space: the Irish-British and Bohemian-German boundaries between 1750 and 1850 Abstract This thesis aims to assess changing perceptions of political boundaries and space as represented in German travel literature about Bohemia and British travelogues about Ireland between 1750 and 1850. Both countries had multi-ethnic and multicultural features, historically defined boundaries and were parts of more extensive political units. The perception of political belonging is examined especially in the context of integration tendencies coming from the state cores. The thesis also examines the importance of alternative types of boundaries, e.g. geographical boundaries (sea and mountains that were often described as "natural boundaries") and cultural boundaries. It is presumed that confessional, linguistic and ethnic boundaries, as well as boundaries between different types of landscape (mountains or lowland) and between poor and prosperous regions, will be of importance in Bohemia and Ireland. Although the presence of cultural boundaries could have a manifestation in the physical appearance of landscape, the construction of the cultural boundaries is considered to be a product of observers'/travellers' mind. Therefore the thesis analyses...
Eighteenth Century Representation of Collective Identity in Tuscany - Content Analysis of Traveller Testimonies on England
Prokopová, Oldřiška ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Power, Martina (referee) ; Militello, Paolo (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
The Master's thesis is based on testimonies of eighteenth-century Tuscan travellers to England. The main questions of the research are how their own identity was created through the categorized and often-stereotyped image of the Other, whether and how it was related to the Enlightenment and what were the cognitive strategies that the travellers used when they encountered the English. The research is based on the method of content analysis applied to the Tuscan traveller Luigi Angiolini, who is then compared to five other Tuscan travellers. An analysis of various aspects of the definition of the Self and of collective identification ensues.

Occidentalism in Russian Travel Literature in the 18th Century: Example of Nikolaj Mihailovič Karamzin Summary The purpose of this research is to explore how the national and cultural identity of Russia was constructed in the eighteenth century through the vehicle of travel writing. At the heart of this research is a close analysis of the travels of the Russian author Nikolaj Karamzin to the Western Europe. Karamzin's Letters of a Russian Traveller is a travelogue in the form of memoir in epistolary arrangement based on his travels through the states of Germany, Switzerland, France and England in 1789-1790. The era and the author chosen are justified by the graveness that the eighteenth century has for the history of the Russian literature. An era of major transformations in all social and cultural aspects of the till-then known Russian lifestyle set the ground for a move towards modernity. By travelling to the Western Europe and displaying the values and rich greatness of some aspects of the cultural, political and social lives, Karamzin proposes a set of alternative national ideals. These ideals would assist the country and the nation to get closer to the standards of the Western traditions and subsequently closer to 'paradise' and the 'perfect' life. As a contextual backup for the analysis of Karamzin's...
