Europeanisation of gender equality in Eastern European countries: the case of Slovakia and Slovenia
Petrechová, Sára ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Menclová, Barbora (referee)
Gender equality has long been declared as one of the European Union's (EU) core values and priorities, and its importance is still emphasised today. EU Member States are expected to participate in and take action to promote gender equality. This thesis focuses on the analysis of the process of Europeanisation of gender equality agenda in two Central and Eastern European (CEE) member states, namely Slovenia and Slovakia. Slovenia has long been at the top of surveys on the state of gender equality. Slovenia is more active and successful in promoting and supporting gender equality compared to other EU Member States in the region, while Slovakia is at the other end of the ranking, facing stagnation and lack of progress in this area. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on the new institutionalism, which allows to analyse the impact of institutions and institutional changes at the national level on the process of Europeanisation of gender policy. At the analytical level, the thesis applies a three-level framework of polity, politics, and policy, which examines institutional arrangements, political parties and their approach to gender equality, and legislative changes related to gender equality in both countries. The aim of the thesis is to identify factors that positively or negatively...
An acoustic-prosodic analysis of contrastive reduplication in English
Petrechová, Sára ; Luef, Eva Maria (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
Sára Petrechová An acoustic-prosodic analysis of contrastive reduplication in English MA Thesis Prague, 2022 Abstract Contrastive reduplication (CR) is an emerging trend of spoken and written English that has been approached from many different angles, such as morphology, semantics, and pragmatics. The phonology and prosody of this phenomenon is to this date quite underresearched. The main function of contrastive reduplication is expressing contrast between the prototypical meaning of a word and its subcategories (e.g., the salad-salad, not tuna salad). This contrast between two reduplicated elements can be defined in acoustic as well as prosodic terms which emphasize the contrastive feature of CR constructions. The aim of this study is to analyze approximately 200 spoken excerpts based on a corpus of CR compiled by Ghomeshi et al. (2004), which includes written examples of CR taken from literature, radio, movies, and TV series. These written examples are manually retrieved and edited from the corresponding movies and TV series in spoken form. The spoken excerpts include primarily American English with a few examples of British English. The analysis focuses on the overall intonation pattern of constructions and differences between two reduplicants in intonation and other acoustic properties, such as overall...
Single uncomplemented adjectives available, responsible, and possible in pre-/post-head position
Petrechová, Sára ; Šaldová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Sláma, Jakub (referee)
The thesis is a qualitative corpus-based analysis focusing on three single uncomplemented adjectives, namely available, responsible and possible in their pre- and post-head position, and analysing features determining the two adjectival positions. The analysis is based on the syntactic and semantic properties proposed by Cinque (2010), which are applied to corpus examples with the intention of attesting or not these properties, namely deictic/generic meaning of adjectives, non- /restrictiveness, stage-/individual-level interpretation, and non-/specificity-inducing character of adjectives. The analysis also employs analyses from other theoretical studies by Bolinger (1952), James (1979) and a corpus-based study by Blöhdorn (2009). The abovementioned properties were attested as relevant in the examples of pre- and postmodifying available and responsible, while the adjective possible showed unclear results. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the quantification, reference, presupposition and semantic meaning play a significant role in determining the adjectival position. Key words: uncomplemented, adjective, adjectives, pre-head position, post-head position, premodification, postmodification, presupposition, quantification
