Analysis of the success of category A contestants in the Geography Olympiad on the example of the Praha-východ district
Konečný, Jaroslav ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Krajňáková, Lenka (referee)
The present bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the success rate of the competitors of category A of the district round of the Geography Olympiad on the basis of their preparation for the competition. The model region of Prague-East was chosen for the analysis. The aim of the thesis is how the contestants prepared for the competition and what aspects of their preparation played a role in their subsequent success in the competition. A sub-objective was to find out whether geographically gifted pupils are found among the most successful competitors. These objectives were narrowed down to a number of research questions to which answers were sought using a questionnaire survey and focus group interviews. It was found that the preparation for the competition varied among the competitors. Some aspects of preparation play a more important role than others. A possible deficiency in some students' preparedness may be little or no involvement by teachers in the preparation process. Key words aptitude in geography, gifted student, preparation for the competition, Geography Olympiad
Analysis of students' errors when creating a map of an ideal island
Čornyjová, Veronika ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Bernhäuserová, Veronika (referee)
This thesis aims to identify the most common errors of pre-service geography teachers when making a map of an ideal island, which is one of the assignments in the compulsory course entitled Cartography (for teachers). The theoretical part of the thesis presents current findings about map-making skills with a focus on university students and describes the main principles of map creation. Followingly, the thesis characterizes various methods for map evaluation with a focus on criterion evaluation. Within this chapter, previous relevant studies are presented as well. The empirical part focuses on process and the results of the analysis of map of an ideal island that were created by the students in the academic year 2021/2022. A total of 221 maps was evaluated. For clarity, the evaluation criteria were divided into four groups (Topographic background, Thematic content, Other compositional elements, Labelling and others). The results showed that the total frequency of errors decreases with every attempt and the most problematic criteria are evenly distributed in all four groups. Moreover, it was found that students' knowledge of maps, map-making skills, and art skills might influence the final map quality. Geography pre-service teachers' perceptions of using artificial intelligence in education
Balvín, Vojtěch ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Cimová, Tereza (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on pre-service teachers'perspective of artificial intelligence. The thesis aims to explore how geography pre-service teachers perceive using artificial intelligence during their study and teaching. The stated aim was achieved through semi-structured interviews with twelve students. For the evaluation of the students' responses, the content analysis method was utilised. The findings show that most of the interviewed pre-service teachers have a positive view of artificial intelligence, and each of them has used it at least once during their studies. It is mostly used by them for writing seminar papers and for information retrieval during their studies. When teaching in lower- or higher-secondary schools, AI is then mainly used by the students to prepare lessons and educational materials. Respondents themselves are trying to deepen their knowledge and skills regarding artificial intelligence. They would also like to attend courses where they would be given the basics of how to work properly with artificial intelligence.
Map making in geography education from teachers' perceptive
Djadik, Martin ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Kuberská, Markéta (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on map making during lessons, which, according to previous research, happens only rarely, even though it has the potential to comprehensively develop pupils. The main objective of the thesis is to characterize in more detail map making during geography lessons at Czech lower-secondary schools and to identify which factors prevent teachers from incorporating this activity more frequently into their lessons. The theoretical part of the thesis describes map skills, including the skill of map making, which is subsequently characterized in detail. A crucial part is the classification of map types, which can be made during school lessons, based on Czech and foreign literature compiled by the author. The theoretical part also summarizes the occurrence of map making in curriculum frameworks, the benefits of map making, teachers' attitudes towards this activity, and the level of pupils' map making skills from the perspective of their teachers. The data for the empirical part of the thesis were obtained through a questionnaire survey, in which 253 geography teachers from lower-secondary schools participated. They filled out a questionnaire containing closed and open-ended questions that were based on academic literature. The research findings showed that the majority of teachers...
The usability of the educational game for the cartography education in lower-secondary schools
Zýma, Marek ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The presented thesis focuses on the usability testing of the educational game Map of an imaginary island for teaching cartography, which was created by the same author in 2020. The work also briefly introduces the game concept, including a description of its individual components and their functions. To improve clarity, the thesis firstly reviews the literature related to educational methods, particularly didactic games, then the issue of usability, its significance, and application in product testing is presented. The research section of the thesis aims to subject the educational game to usability testing, examining the perspectives of both pupils and teachers on its use and identifying the most significant shortcomings, which are then addressed in a separate chapter. The research was conducted using the two most common methods used in general product testing, i.e., questionnaire surveys and interviews with users. The research results showed that the game is a welcome addition to teaching, with rules that are understandable for both pupils and teachers, evoking a pleasant feeling in them, and despite its gaming nature, maintaining a clear didactic purpose. However, in some cases, there were problems with correct solving of various tasks, mainly due to pupils' age. As mentioned earlier, the thesis...
Motivation of pupils to study geography on the example of the Geographical Grammar School
Zdeňková, Vladimíra ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Krajňáková, Lenka (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is devoted to the motivation of pupils to study geography. The goal of the thesis is to evaluate the motivation of students in geography at secondary school and to find out which factors have the greatest influence on their motivation. These variables are evaluated on the example of the Geographical Grammar School in the form of Focus group interviews with the pupils of the school. The bachelor's thesis is supplemented by information from the school management, obtained using a semi-standardized interview. The result of the analysis is that motivation is necessary in the teaching process in geography and it is important that there should be used elements of support for both external and internal motivation in the lessons.

Pupils' perception of maps
Benešová, Eva ; Krajňáková, Lenka (advisor) ; Mísařová, Darina (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on pupils' map perception and its main objective is to characterize how sixth-grade pupils perceive visuals that resemble maps in their appearance or characteristics, or are defined as maps according to commonly used definitions. The theoretical part of the thesis explains in detail the concept of maps in foreign and Czech literature, but also in geography textbooks for the sixth grade of elementary schools. An important part of the theoretical part is also the description of mental map schemata, which were presented in detail by the American geographer A. MacEachren in his book How Maps Work. A total of 22 respondents from three elementary schools participated in the research. The selected pupils took part in approximately fifteen-minute interviews, in which they first described what they think a map is, and then decided whether the presented visuals were maps or not, providing their reasoning for their decisions. A total of 15 visuals were presented, which were selected based on the previous analysis of the literature. The results of the research showed that the used geography textbook and the teaching style of the teacher influence how pupils perceive maps. Several basic elements according to which pupils recognize maps were derived from their answers. Among the most...
