The main theme of this work is analysis blending of sport and international relations. This relationship is discussed on the example of Olympic Games in Moscow and Los Angeles. These Olympic Games met with collective boycott of the Western or more preciesly the Eastern block. Boycotts of both of these Olympics Games were associated with the current political situation and with the culmination of the Cold War. The Soviet Union invaded to Afghanistan in 1980.Significant part of the Western world responded to this invasion by announcing a boycott of the olympic games in Moscow. The olympic games in Los Angeles were held four years later. Most of the countries of the Eastern block decided to boycott the games beacause of the fear for the safety of their sport expeditions. The theoretical part of this work describes the main events between sport and internetional relations in the 20th and the 21th century. The practical part is devoted only to olympic games in Moscow and Los Angeles, It is especially focused on the period before these Olympics Games. During these periods it has been decided about the boycott of the games at the high level policy. Final thesis, which is based on this diploma work, is the fact, that the sport is frequently used tool of the foreign policy and it is not very effective.
Which political regime produces better sports results - capitalism, or socialism
Janoušek, Filip ; Lahvička, Jiří (advisor) ; Čermáková, Klára (referee)
The main aim of my paper is to investigate the influence of the political system on sports achievements. I examine the difference between medal achievements of athletes from so called socialist countries with one ruling party and command economy and those from democratic countries with market economy in the following 5 major sport events in the period from 1949 to 2009: The Summer Olympic games, The Winter Olympic games, The World Championships in Athletics, The World Swimming Championships, The World Gymnastics Championships. In order to determine this influence, two models are used. The first is the basic model, which is similar to models widely used in existing works on this topic. The second is the model with dummy for countries, which uses fixed effects. This paper performs a detailed analysis of wide range of sports which makes it different from existing research. Using the two above mentioned models, the comparison of countries with similar GDP per capita shows, that socialist countries athletes obtained more medals that those from democratic countries. The difference was 1.8 -- 3.7 percentage points from the total number of medals awarded for analyzed period of time.
