The Road to Democracy in Communist Countries: Exploring the Influences in Transformation including nationalism

This research delves into the transformative political journeys of Eastern Bloc countries following the disintegration of the Soviet Union, emphasizing the distinct paths they embarked upon-ranging from democracies to autocracies. Central to this exploration is the potent role of nationalism, particularly the dynamics of inclusive and exclusive nationalism, in steering these transitions. Through comparative analyses, the study unravels the complex interplay of factors that influenced the trajectories of these nations. The findings not only map the road to democracy in communist countries but also illuminate the profound influence of nationalism on such metamorphoses. By shedding light on these intricate dynamics, the research offers a robust framework for understanding and guiding democratic transitions in other regions, emphasizing the nuances of nationalism that can either bolster or hinder the pursuit of democratic ideals. Cleavage politics and Europeanisation-induced transformation of the national political space - the case of the Czech Republic

Abstract This research seeks to map the national political space and assess the prevailing cleavage patterns in the Czech Republic. Processes of globalisation and Europeanisation have left their imprint in Western Europe - splitting the electorate into winners and losers of globalisation and denationalisation. This demarcation vs. integration magnet is also relevant in the CEE region - altering and reshuffling the underlying structure of party competition and EU contestation. By employing quantitative content analysis of print media the prevailing issue and cleavage dimensions will be reconstructed both during early stages of democratic transition (1996 Parliamentary elections) and after the 2004-EU-enlargement (2010 elections). While the political discourse and politics in the 1990s are primarily structured by issues of economic transition and post-communist transformation (underlying the classical socio-economic cleavage between market and state), in 2010 also cultural and post-materialist political...

First Teachers, Then Students: Media Education in the Czech Republic.

1 As more media continues to become available, there is an ever-growing need to consider how certain technologies and media messages affect users and society overall. The aim of this dissertation is to develop an understanding of media literacy in the Czech Republic and to investigate its significance within education, particularly teacher education. The research methods adopted for this study include an in-depth review of relevant media literacy literature, coupled with interviews from Czech Pedagogical Faculty members, and analyses of Czech national policy and university curricular documents. The findings from this work show that the main benefit of media literacy in primary and secondary schools is a non-hierarchical learning environment that encourages discussion, interaction, and critical thinking amongst students. Additionally, current media education policy in the Czech Republic is found to be ineffective. The main conclusion is that with more required media literacy courses or even a national standard for media literacy in teacher education programmes, the Czech Republic could improve teaching methods and present policy.

Euroscepticism has recently started to enjoy a renaissance, boasting many different works in different formats whether it be a comparative study of two European countries or, investigating Euroscepticism in different national contexts to account for possible variations of Euroscepticism. This work aims to show the contrary. Using country case studies of the Czech Republic and the UK, this paper shows that regardless of temporal differences and differences in national contexts, Euroscepticism is intrinsically linked to some lines of argument concerning economy and democracy.
