Construction of gender identities in sports: Comparative study of yoga and MMA
Hoza, Matyáš ; Országhová, Kristína (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
In my work, I am researching strategies of gender identity construction in MMA and yoga. In the first part of work, the matter of masculinity construction, within the boundaries of yoga, is discussed. The most interesting concept shown is "second sport". In this concept masculine actors demean yoga as a sport and associate it with passivity. Strategies of construction are also researched with female fighters in MMA environment. In MMA the main concepts are fragile sex and intimacy. Female fighters show signs of refusal of violence. The creation of femininity and masculinity is then compared. The comparison is quite tricky, as the conditions are not the same for both genders. Masculine actors in yoga have no desire in practices of feminine gender, whereas female fighters need to practice femininity and masculinity. Even so, some correlations can be observed, for example the expression of gender through heteronormativity. In the second part of the work there are identified four models of masculinity, through which I am watching the evolution of manliness in martial arts sports. Masculinity models are working with the sense of dominance and aggression. For the creation of data, semi structured interviews and participant observation, were used.

Strategic Outness and Doing Gender of Trans* Women
Demjanovičová, Klára ; Andresová, Nela (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor's thesis explores the social specifies of trans* women, whose gender identity may contrast with gender expectations of two seperate and opposing categories of women and men. Gender identity is part of every individual's social identity, communicated through how they do gender. Trans* women thus may be situated in a specific situation of strategic decision- making about doing femininity in a functioning gender arrangement. The paper uses the concept of strategic outness to capture this strategic identity managment, which raises the issue of social factors influencing outness about trans* gender identity, but also builds on the specificities of doing femininity, which occurs as subordinate to masculinity in a hierarchical gender order. The aim of the paper is to approach the aspects that influence trans* women's acceptance and outness about their gender in different social contexts and to explore how their strategies of doing femininity differ according to how they interpret these different social contexts. The empirical part is based on the analysis of six in-depth interviews with trans* women of different ages, who are connected by their experiences in the workplace. The analysis followed qualitative techniques of segmenting and coding parts of the interviews. Key findings include...

Importance of material objects in Ječná street from perspective of individual and social biography of Ječná 39a building
Strecková, Anna ; Grygar, Jakub (advisor) ; Kotík, Michal (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Importance of Material Objects in Ječná Street from Perspective of Individual and Social Biography of Ječná 39a Building" deals with social significance of material objects, using the material environment of a very busy Prague street Ječná as a case study. The central idea of the thesis is that people understand and assign meaning to material objects based on their role in inter-group networks that constitute their social identity. The way in which individuals (or groups of individuals) perceive material objects is also subject to the spatio-temporal context. We base our hypotheses on data obtained in interviews with the residents of the street, we analyze how they interpret their physical environment and how these interpretations differ or match. We also analyze the situation when the perception of a material object changes over time using the case study of the Ječná 39a building, examining its social biography employing theorie of Igor Kopytoff. We are trying to show that even busy, traffic-loaded streets, seemingly lacking any social significance, offer a lot of social context based of the way people relate to its material environment.
Gender stereotypes women face in business in the Czech Republic
Rollová, Elisabeth ; Teichman, Klaudia (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This thesis deals with gender stereotypes that women face in business in the Czech Republic. Although it may seem that men and women are equal in society, women still face gender biases that place them in the roles of mothers. Entrepreneurship is then perceived as a male domain. These gender roles and other stereotypes make it difficult for women to integrate into the labor market. Because of this binary perception of roles in society, women often do not even consider entrepreneurship as a career choice for fear of not having a chance to succeed. The main objectives of this thesis are to find out what stereotypes women encounter in entrepreneurship and how they cope with them. The thesis analyses qualitative data obtained through semi-structured interviews with six Czech female entrepreneurs.
Motivation for migration of young adults from the Moravian-Silesian region to the capital city of Prague
Němcová, Tereza ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the motivation of migration of young adults from the Moravian- Silesian region to the capital city of Prague. With the help of qualitative research, the thesis tries to present the motivation to migrate as an outcome of the current situation in the Moravian- Silesian Region. It is primarily a statement not only about individual decisions, but also about the impact of structural problems, inequalities, and socio-economic differences in Czech society on mobility and on the dynamics of demographic development. Using the examples of individual respondents, the thesis shows a certain specific life path typical for the children of the so-called "Husák children" generation from the Moravian-Silesian region. These life trajectories of the selected individuals are strongly connected with the idea of social success and the culture of migration that individuals adopt from their environment. Motivation to migrate is framed in the paper primarily using push and pull factors. The research is based on a series of in-depth episodic interviews with students and graduates of Prague universities. The main finding of the thesis is the crucial role of opportunities, in the areas of education, employment and the acquisition of social capital in the form of contacts, which functioned as the...
Social Management of Intragender Nudity
Tomková, Hana ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
Social management of intragender nudity Hana Tomková In this thesis, I examine women's behaviour in spaces with limited privacy, such as changing rooms and showers at sports venues or wellness facilities. In the theoretical part of the thesis I try to use the literature to highlight the issue of judging not only female nudity and the issue of increased female veiling in spaces where intragender nudity is expected. In this first, theoretical, part, I deal with the definition of shame and its possible presence in such spaces. I formulate the assumption that this shame, and by extension increased levels of veiling, may be due to the judgement of bodies based on the prevalence of medical and other professional discourses among the lay public. I use Foucaultian theories of judging the obedience and utility of the body to define such judgments in this thesis, where I attempt to point out that in our, modern, age, experts are not the only ones with the power to judge. In this thesis I have used qualitative research, specifically ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, supplemented by interviews. The research showed that rather than a sense of judgement, it is habit, covering up based on learned stereotypes, the desire to maintain personal space and, last but not least, personal responsibility,...
