Training of visual selective attention in older adults
Frydrychová, Zuzana ; Georgi, Hana (advisor) ; Jarolímová, Eva (referee) ; Špatenková, Naděžda (referee)
Introduction: The effect of cognitive training on cognitive performance has been of interest to researchers for many years. Training is most often targeted at attention, working memory, or executive functions that are affected by age. The goal is usually not only to test whether it is possible to improve performance on the trained task, but also on other untrained tasks that are assumed to be related to the trained task. Given the aging of the population, these interventions are increasingly targeting the older adults. Aim: The study aims to examine the effects of training visual selective attention and working memory using Filter It - our version of the canonical Change Detection Task (CDT) for a mobile device, the tablet. Method: The sample consisted of 62 older adults aged 60-75 years, who were divided into experimental and active control group through the block randomization. The experimental group trained using the Filter It application, and the active control group trained using the Clouds application. The aim was to examine the effectiveness of a 6-week individual visual adaptive CDT training administered on a tablet, in terms of specific training improvements (Filter It - Colors and Shapes paradigms) and transfer effect on measures of working memory (Letter Number Sequencing, Visual...
Geriatric anxiety-Anxiety and cognitive performance in older people
Heissler, Radek ; Georgi, Hana (advisor) ; Blatný, Marek (referee)
Many researches are focused on the study of depression in older age, their results show a negative impact of depression on the cognition of the elderly. There are not many studies that focus on geriatric anxiety and their results are often contradictory. In the theoretical part, this thesis aims to provide an insight into the anxiety from the philosophical and clinical standpoint, and in particular to describe the specifics of the geriatric anxiety and various areas of human life that may affect it. The practical part presents the results of 279 participants of the NANOK study aged 60-92 years, the analysis focuses on the effects of anxiety symptoms on cognition, taking into account depressive symptoms. Significant differences in healthy elderly persons are found only in the tests of immediate and delayed recall, no significant differences are found in the attention and executive functions tests. Various ways of influencing cognition by anxiety are discussed. In our sample of healthy older people, the rate of anxiety symtoms was not associated with the level of cognitive performance. Normative Study Of A Memory Test "FCSRT-IR" in Older Population
Horáková, Karolína ; Georgi, Hana (advisor) ; Kulišťák, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis is focused on standardization of the neuropsychological test The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test with Immediate Recall (FCSRT-IR), this test is a one of memory tests which contains phase with controlled learning. In the theoretical part it deals with aging and cognitive functions especially memory, further episodic memory test especially FCSRT-IR and its administration and benefits of this test against other episodic memory tests. In the practical part of this diploma thesis we report norms based on population in age 60 years and older (N= 362; range of age from 61 to 97), the norms are based on National Normative Study of Cognitive Determinants of Healthy Ageing which took place from 2012 to 2015 (IGA NT13145) and the author of this diploma thesis was a member of its team. In the second part of this thesis we deal with validation study which was conducted on population of people with dementia in Alzheimer's disease (N= 37; range of age from 61 to 88) comparing with healthy control group. In this validation study we confirmed that FCSRT-IR is a sensitive method for detection dementia in Alzheimer's disease. Keywords: Episodic memory, FCSRT-IR, controlled learning, norms, validation

Title: The Effect of Multimodal Method of Rehabilitation of Cognitive Functions using Computer-Assisted program NEUROP Author: Mgr. Alice Pulkrabková Department: Department of Psychology, Charles University, Faculty of Arts Supervisor: doc. PhDr. Petr Kulišťák, Ph.D. Abstract: Neuropsychological rehabilitation of cognitive functions is an important field of clinical psychology application. It can moderate brain damage sequelae and has a major impact on patients'quality of life. At present, with an improving medical knowledge and care, we are able to cure previously fatal conditions. That is associated with the fact, that a number of people who are facing the cognitive impairment is steadilly growing. Therefore it is important to develop new methods of rehabilitation of cognitive functions and to assess their effectivity. In our thesis we outline the theoretical background of rehabilitation of cognitive functions and map different types of interventions. The main goal is to assess the effectivity of our group multimodal complex cognitive training program. It combines the conventional methods of cognitive rehabilitation with a computer-assisted program NEUROP and education. The program is designed for a small group of max. 10 patients. The length of the program is 8 weeks, with 2 weekly sessions (2x 40 mins...
