Specific Features of Non-Traditional Students in Tertiary Education

Nowadays, mature (i.e. nontraditional) students form an integral and relatively numerous part of the higher education student population not only abroad but also in the Czech Republic, which is a follow-up to the tradition of distance adult education widespread before 1989. Nontraditional students reflect a rapid development of the Czech higher education system after 2000 resulting in massification of higher education and soaring numbers of undergraduates. Nontraditional students are representatives of the knowledge society and lifelong learning - the concepts widely supported throughout Europe. The aim of the thesis is to approach the segment of nontraditional students as a whole and to cover their key attributes. The main features of nontraditional students are presented, especially in terms of their numbers, age stratification, choice of schools, subjects of study and forms of study and also dropout rates. Furthermore, their primary motivational factors and barriers to university studies are also mentioned as well as adopted learning strategies. I will also mention the attitude of employers to the importance of university degrees. Reference services of Musical Department of Municipal Library of Prague

This bachelor's thesis seeks to analyze, describe, and evaluate the current state of reference services at the Music Department of the Municipal Library of Prague. Within the scope of this work, the author will perform: - A basic exploration of the subject matter in terms of the available literature and other information; the research of selected sources and gathering of relevant information "on site", at the MLP building, will result in a brief presentation of key terms and principles pertaining to reference services, with a particular focus on the established practice of such services where they are associated with public music libraries. - An analysis and detailed description of the reference services on offer at the Music Department of the MLP, which will be presented in the main part of the thesis (the role of these services within the overall context of the reference service system at the MLP as a whole, and of cooperating music libraries across the Czech Republic; the operational coverage of these services in terms of storage and work space, financial funding, and manpower; reference stocks and resources; typical users of these services and types of requests; records of requests and their assessment; etc.).
