Assessing ecosystem services and the alternatives of their future development in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves
Harmáčková, Veronika Zuzana ; Vačkářová, Davina Elena (advisor) ; Cudlínová, Eva (referee) ; Pechanec, Vilém (referee)
The provision of ecosystem services within social-ecological systems is influenced by multiple environmental and anthropogenic driving forces, affecting natural ecosystems. At the same time, the capacity of ecosystems to concurrently provide different types of ecosystem services is inherently limited. Thus, ecosystem changes and their effect on ecosystem services have direct implications for human existence and well-being. The aim of this thesis is to present a modelling approach to assess regulating, provisioning and cultural ecosystem services and to quantify their potential trade-offs, illustrated by two case studies carried out in selected UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in the Czech Republic, Třeboň Basin Biosphere Reserve and Šumava Biosphere Reserve. Both of the selected case study areas are characterized by high levels of natural and cultural assets and challenges regarding future landscape management. In this study, first the social-ecological dynamics within the study areas was analysed by creating participative scenarios through collaboration with local stakeholders, eliciting their preferences regarding future landscape development to 2050. Second, the impact of the scenarios on ecosystem services and their trade-offs were assessed using a combination of spatially explicit models and...

Procházková, Adéla ; Bartoš, Michael (advisor) ; Cudlínová, Eva (referee)
The focus of this diploma thesis is organic farming. Its goal is to evaluate the positives and the negatives of organic farming from the sustainable development point of view. However, this thesis uses the division into four pillars of sustainability, in which the social pillar is divided into socio-political and human pillar, which is more fitting in this case. This division allows a more detailed evaluation of organic farming. The thesis also deals with the question of sustainability of the researched farm in the future. The method chosen for the thesis is a case study, thanks to which a specific case was researched and answers for the stated questions could be found. Rainton farm in the South of Scotland serves as the case for the practical part of the thesis. Since the early 1990s Rainton has been in the process of conversion from the conventional to the organic way of farming. The business has been diversified and therefore the research could be focused also on the development of the visitor centre, ice-cream or cheese making. Thanks to the data from interviews, participant observation and other documents, a complex picture of the organic farm was created. The research has shown that the...

The research includes a brief assessment of the situation of sales of local food in Pilsen and in particular, the calculations of local multiplier of farm shop in Pilsen. Furthermore this method and the results are evaluated. The thesis is combination of social and cultural ecology and Keynesianism with emphasis on the concept of the multiplier. Firstly, the aim is to calculate the value of the local multiplier and also evaluate the use of this tool. Since assuming positive influence of the farm shop on the local economy, the result of the indicator could be another argument for strengthening efforts in promoting local food and localization.

Local people and national parks: Šumava and Pelister in comparative perspective
Petrova, Saška ; Čihař, Martin (advisor) ; Těšitel, Jan (referee) ; Cudlínová, Eva (referee)
People's views towards national parks have been reshaped since the designation of Yellowstone, the first national park in the world. Faced with the necessity to protect nature, on the one hand, and the lack of financial and human resources, on the other, national park administrations are forced to find creative ways to improve local resident participation in park management. Thus, determining the factors responsible for the changes in people's perceptions and attitudes has become one of the priority activities in the creation and implementation of the management strategies in national parks. This research investigates the local residents' perception of, and attitudes towards, nature protection and local development in two national parks: Pelister National Park in Macedonia and Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic. It analyses the significance of the residents' place attachment as a factor in creation of their attitudes and perceptions. The study supplements previous similar research carried on in these two parks and as such explores potential trends and changes in their management practices, especially the issues related to residents' involvement. Data are collected with the aid of a standardised questionnaire undertaken in two years in each park. The strength of people's connections to, or...
