Rewritings in the postmodern novel. A transatlantic comparison between Roberto Bolaño and Jáchym Topol

This thesis is a comparative analysis between the novels Amuleto (Amulet 1999) by Roberto Bolaño and Misiones nocturnas (Night work 2001) by Jáchym Topol. Novels from different regions that, besides being written on the threshold of the 21st century, are inspired by the traumatic events of 1968 in Mexico and Prague, respectively. Even more important for this research is the identification in both works of some aesthetic tendencies attributed to postmodernity: the mixture of different genres, the fusion between the old and the new and the fragmentary aesthetics. This study focuses mainly on the rewriting of literary genres, which occurs in various dimensions: either as an innovation of popular genres such as the fairy tale and the detective story, or as a reinvention of writings such as the Greek myth and oral narratives such as the Czech foundational myth. Thus, the first chapter is devoted to the aesthetic characteristics of postmodernism found in novels. The second chapter analyzes the rewriting of the predominant genres in the works: the detective story in Amuleto and the fairy tale in Misiones nocturnas.
