Dramaturgy of death: Czech film 1993-2003

Je-li téma této diplomové práce definováno korelací mezi fenoménem smrti a prvním desetiletím samostatné české kinematografie, není to proto, že by filmy daného období představovaly obzvlášť vhodné východisko k obecným úvahám o smrti. Vždyť pokud si tyto filmy představíme v souvislosti s klíčovými díly československé kinematografie, zejména šedesátých let, typu OBCHOD NA KORZE (1965), DÉMANTY NOCI ( 1966), KOČÁR DO VÍDNĚ ( 1966), OSTŘE SLEDOVANÉ VLAKY ( 1966), MARKETA LAZAROVÁ (1967), VŠICHNI DOBŘÍ RODÁCI (1968) nebo ZBÉHOVÉ A POUTNÍCI ( 1968), ve kterých se motiv smrti projevuje velmi intenzívním způsobem, sotva v nich nalezneme obrazy srovnatelného významu a působivosti. Dokonce se přinejmenším na první pohled zdá, že se v českých filmech v tomto období smrt snad ani v podstatnější míře nevyskytuje, to je ale již jen zdánlivě pravdivý dojem. Při bližším pohledu se ukazuje, že smrt je zde naopak téměř všudypřítomná, nalezneme jen málo filmů, ve kterých by se vůbec neobjevila. Podle očekávání mezi nimi sice naprosto převažují tzv. komerční komedie z produkce Jaroslava Soukupa, Víta Olmera a dalších, což platí zejména pro období devadesátých let, po roce 2000 však nalezneme i několik filmů s poněkud vyššími ambicemi, které motiv smrti prakticky neobsahují, jako POČETÍ MÉHO MLADŠÍHO BRATRA (2000), LÁSKA SHORA...

The film and the railways. Films which take place in the train

Film i vlak jsou symboly moderní doby, rychlosti, osudovosti a pomíjivosti. Tématem této diplomové práce jsou filmy, které se odehrávají ve vlaku. Nikoli filmy, v nichž hraje železnice jakoukoliv roli. Soustředím se především na jízdu vlakem a její filmové zobrazování. Tento typ syžetu je oblíbený v literatuře i v celých dějinách filmu, protože jízda vlakem zaručuje, že se něco bude dít, i když se zdánlivě nebude dít nic. Základní premisa všech uměleckých děl odehrávajících se ve vlaku je, že cesta vlakem znamená změnu. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí: teoretické, ve které se zaměřuji na vybudování a popis vztahu mezi železnicí a kinematografií, vztahu, který je založen na modernistických základech rychlosti a mobility, a analytické, ve které jsem si vybral modelové příklady filmu, které zastupují určité varianty filmového zpracování jízdy ve vlaku. Jsou to: Frigo na mašině (The General; Buster Keaton a Clyde Bruckman, 1926), Na sever severozápadní linkou (North by Northwest; Alfréd Hitchcock, 1959), Jeden večer, jeden vlak (Un soir, un train; André Delvaux, 1968), Evropa (Europa; Larse von Trier, 1991) a Kalamita (Věra Chytilová, 1982). Nepracuji s předem přesně daným korpusem filmových děl, ani se teritoriálně neomezuji na konkrétní národní kinematografii. To, co vytvářím, je určitá typologie možností,...

Everyone's heroine. Filmic representation of Jean d'Arc

Tato diplomová práce je základním úvodem do problematiky filmové reprezentace Jany z Arku. Pokusila jsem se ji reflektovat v širším dějinném i teoreticko-filmologickém kontextu. Z nedostatku prostoru jsem ve své práci opomenula velmi důležitou a zajímavou otázku, proč si režiséři vybrali zrovna postavu Jany z Arku, rovněž jsem se nevěnovala osobě Karla VII., která tvoří jakýsi pandán k Janině figuře. To vše je otázkou budoucího výzkumu, stejně jako zvážení dalších možností i případných limitů mnou navrhované metody, která se věnovala elipsám v rámci narativního příběhu, ovšem nezabývala se spojením těchto výpustek, což je nesmírně podstatný krok k prohloubení této metody. Mým cílem nebylo podat ucelený obraz o Janě z Arku ve filmu, ale seznámit čtenáře s bohatou filmografií o této postavě a navrhnout metodu, jak je možné na historické filmy pohlížet. Snad se mi alespoň do jisté míry podařilo vykreslit Janin obraz a její reprezentaci na filmovém plátně v její mnohavrstevnosti, neboť právě v neuchopitelnosti této figury spatřuji její největší kouzlo - a snad právě proto mě stále "případ Jana z Arku" zajímá, vzrušuje i provokuje. 105

Cinema in the typewriter. The phenomenon of fictious scenario in Czech lands

Abstract This thesis is dedicated to a specific type of literary film art called rather innovatively in the paper as "a fictive screenplay". It is a literary work of art which uses different forms established as a basis for a transformation of a written art to a film: film thesis, libretto, literary or technical scenario. So called "fictive scenarios" are different from other creations of this type primarily by the apparent intention of the author to see them as a complete piece of art in its printed form without any ambitions or actual need for subsequent realization of its film version. The composition of the paper is based on a study of the relevant materials and is divided into three parts. The first part covers a compilation of texts collected by screen editor Kurt Pinthus in the 1910's (Das Kinobuch, the oldest Czech "fictive scenarios"). The second part covers film-related literary art pieces created by the Czech avant-garde in the 1920's. (Fictive scenario as a form of the Czech avant-garde.) Golden Prague

This work deals with patriotic symbols which have been processed in feature films in the occupation period 1939- 1945, with emphasis on the symbol of Prague. Prague was sometimes used only as a scene, but for example in the film Pantáta Bezoušek it has become the theme of the whole film. It should be noted that these films which we perceive rather sentimental now, had a big own role and gave hope at the past time. Against these films I put in contrast the German film The Golden City which shows Prague as a city full of corrupted people and pitfalls.

The Silence after Mankind

Vladimír Körner is one of the prominent Czech screenwriters and his contributions to the Czech cinema are considered equivalent to any distinguished director. According to his own words he is dealing with only one subject matter ? he creates an apocalyptic vision of a world without mercy and love. This analysis of his body of work and its singular structural elements broadens the discourse from which it is possible to look at his creative output. Körner?s influences can be found in modernist literary traditions, proto-novel structures and the philosophical tradition of existentialism. The analysis pursues his use of leitmotivs and recurrent themes that are the main vehicles of Körner?s artistic message. The pros and cons of his auctorial method are demonstrated through the analysis of the construction of the diegetic world and the characters, both continuously made of identical sems. The analysis points as well at him being one of the first authors who brought the theme of the shattered communal life and coexistence of Czechs and Germans. First and foremost it however tries to shed light on the evolution of his work from outstanding psychological dramas and historical allegories such as Adelheid, Údolí Včel (Valley of the Bees) and the novel Písečná kosa (Sandy Beach) in the sixties and fifties to midcult creations from the nineties and the beginning of the 21st century such as Krev zmizelého (Shadows of the Deceased). It relies on the neoformalist analysis of the sources that are his scripts, novels and novellas. In three case studies we as well examine the relationship between Körner and another creative contributor ? the director.

"Král Šumavy" - phenomenon and ideology of / in the film

This bachelor thesis is interested in one of the most famous, popular as well as controversial movie of Czechoslovak provenience of the 1950s ? in the movie Král Šumavy (Smugglers of Death). This movie is so pupular because of perfect and imaginative interpretation, but then it is controversial due to ideological content. The thesis tries to put the movie into perspektive of history and of today. Analyses the movie, exactly its parts and its context. It takes into consideration got finding and consultation, and confronts them with general or conventional explications of communist ideas. Finally, it concentrates on problem of ideology in/of film and cinematography in its entirety.
