Subject Matter Jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court
Bureš, Jan ; Šturma, Pavel (advisor) ; Čepelka, Čestmír (referee) ; Bílková, Veronika (referee)
in English The theme of this dissertation is the subject matter jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Offences such as aggression, genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, sometimes called the "core crimes", are the most serious crimes ever indentified under international law. These crimes do not violate only some particular rights, but they threaten the whole international community, peace, security and well-being of the world. Therefore it is essential to have a precise legal definition of these grave crimes and to establish an effective judicial mechanism for prosecution of the most dangerous criminals. However, it is not easy to find general consent on these matters among the international community. There is not much space for internationalisation in the field of criminal law, which was traditionally considered an important part of national sovereignty. Thus the path towards establishment of the ICC, which is the first permanent international criminal judicial body ever, was extremely difficult, as was definition of the four core crimes falling within its jurisdiction. This thesis scrutinises the concrete provisions of the ICC Statute, the "Rome Statute", which constitute substantive law by defining the crime of genocide (art. 6), crimes against humanity (art. 7), war...
The identification of the risk factors and optimization of the follow-up of colorectal cancer patients and their families
Vítek, Petr ; Bureš, Jan (advisor) ; Dítě, Petr (referee) ; Zavoral, Miroslav (referee)
The identification of the risk factors and optimization of the follow-up of colorectal cancer patients and their families Introduction: Patients after colorectal cancer resection are at risk of a recurrence of neoplasia at the site of anastomosis as well as metachronic neoplasias. First-degree relatives of colorectal cancer patients also have a higher risk of the disease that is caused both by hereditary and non-hereditary common factors. Objective: The main goal of the endoscopic part of the project was to evaluate the benefit of chromocolonoscopy with a solution of methylene blue for detection of neoplastic lesions in patients after colorectal cancer resection. The epidemiological part of project was focused on the evaluation of risk factors and current follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer and their families. Methods and results:In the endoscopic part of the work we performed regular white-light colonoscopy followed by chromocolonoscopy in 62 patients after colorectal cancer resection. We used 0.1% solution of methylene blue; total chromocolonoscopy was possible in 94% (58/62) of the patients. Endoscopic and histopathological characteristics of detected lesions were assessed for both methods. Chromocolonoscopy resulted in a statistically highly significant (p < 0.001) higher detection of...
Applications of multiple reference frames environments in behavioral research
Telenský, Petr ; Bureš, Jan (advisor) ; Němec, Pavel (referee) ; Otáhal, Jakub (referee)
This work has been motivated by the desire to enhance our knowledge about specific cognitive requirements of navigation in multiple reference frames environments and to understand the roles of the hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex in this behavior. The main conclusions of this thesis are: (a) We have developed a novel behavioral test called the Enemy Avoidance Task. The initial set of experiments has shown that laboratory rats are able to plan their movement with respect to a to-be-avoided moving object. Behavioral performance in the task may be quantitatively evaluated. (b) The aforementioned ability is crucially dependent on the functional integrity of the dorsal hippocampus. To the contrary, functional inactivation of the dorsal hippocampi by local infusion of tetrodotoxin did not cause any impairment in the ability of the animal to estimate its distance from a non-moving object. The finding suggests a specific role of the hippocampus in dynamic cognitive processes required for flexible navigation strategies such as continuous updating of information about the position of a moving stimulus. These results are at odds with the two major theories of hippocampal function (Cognitive map theory and Declarative memory theory) and therefore suggest that revision of the theories is necessary. (c)...

The Rise and Fall of the Green Party
Sklenářová, Zdeňka ; Bureš, Jan (advisor) ; Polášek, Martin (referee)
Anotation The thesis' purpose is to analyse the evolution of Green Party between 2006 and 2010. Thesis is concentrated on the period when the party recorded under the leadership of M. Bursik its greatest electoral success and managed to not only exceed the electoral clause to enter the Chamber of Deputies, but also participate in forming a government together with the ODS and the KDU - CSL. Soon it became clear that the party was splitted in opinion and there was a struggle between realists, realizing that if they wanted to enforce their policies they would have to accept many compromises, and ecological radicals, who wanted to impose all or nothing. The thesis also describes the work of the Green Party in government and growing conflicts between members of Party, which resulted in the establishment of intra-party fraction "Democratic challenge" and consequent elimination of MPs O. Zubová and V. Jakubková of the Green Party parliamentary group. Particularly, intraparty conflicts and the inability of its President M. Bursik to unite the party meant a slow but steady decline in party preferences. This observation was confirmed by the electoral failures in regional elections and following elections to the European Parliament, after whichM. Bursik resigned. But finally even his successor O. Liška didn't manage...
