Ethnicity in China - Who are the Hui and who are the Dungan?
Horálek, Adam ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Uher, David (referee) ; Wicherkiewicz, Tomasz (referee)
Ethnicity in China - Who are the Hui and Who are the Dungan? The thesis has three main objectives: (1) to develop a concept appropriate for the comparison of different ethnicities, (2) to use this concept to identify differences of ethnicity in China, and (3) to analyse these differences in the cases of the Huis and the Dungans. The second section postulates the concept of ethnicity as a secondary identity, and this becomes the main theoretical and methodological frame of the work. Six primary identities and dimensions, that together form the components of ethnicity, are discussed. Policy, which is interpreted as a context of ethnicity, and (ethno)culture, understood as an expression of ethnicity, are not seen as components. The concept enables the comparison of distinct perceptions (emic) and qualitative atributes (etic) of ethnicity from six main perspectives. The third chapter is focused on ethnicity and the ethnic policies of China. The central objective is to define a Chinese official category minzu, its position in the context of European concepts of ethnicity and nation, and its comparison with the concept of nation in the Soviet tradition, which represents minzu's template. Minzu is interpreted, unlike most other concepts, as an ethnic group rather than a nation, and is seen as a political...

Kreisslová, Sandra ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Nosková, Jana (referee) ; Šatava, Leoš (referee)
The aim of the dissertation is to find answers to questions that are connected to the problems of the construction of ethnic/national identity and related identification signs. This discourse creation of collective identity is analyzed on the basis of biographic texts of the citizens of the Czech Republic who identify with Germans, and remained, after the forced extradition of the German-speaking population, for various reasons in the country of their origin. The research project is, from the territorial point of view, situated in the border region of Chomutov which has been for centuries formed mainly by the German population. Using the biographic method there has been recorded, in the course of the terrain investigation itself, a total of 50 biographic narratives of the representatives of three successive generations of this community. By means of analysis and interpretation of the content of these biographic materials there are primarily captured the collectively shared pictures of the past and important identification attributes by which protagonists of the oldest generation of this community form their ethnic/national identity. In this way it is clarified how the narrators themselves re-construct and re-interpret their subjectively experienced "we", at the same time defining themselves against...

There were frequent mutual struggles for control of territory or the acquisition of central positions in the ruling states. The 14th - early 15th century West Mongolian tribes joined together into one power- political entity, which appears in historical literature called the Oirat tribal federation - Derben Oirat (in Kalmyk Dörven-öörd, i.e. "Four Close"). The Oirat tribal association was composed of four main tribes: the Züngars (royal family Chorose), the Derbets, the Torgouts...
