John's Gospel and History
Plíšek, Jonáš ; Roskovec, Jan (advisor) ; Pokorný, Petr (referee)
THE PURPOSE OF MY THESIS IS TO EXPLORE HOW MUCH THE JOHN'S GOSPEL - NAMELY THE JESUS PRESENTED BY IT - IS HISTORICALLY RELIABLE ACCORDING TO THE CURRENT SCHOLARSHIP. METHODICALLY, I BASE MY INQUIRY ON COMPARISON WITH THE SYNOPTICS, ON CONFRONTATION WITH THE COMMENTARIES AND SELECTED RELEVANT SCHOLARLY STUDIES. I SEEK TO DEMONSTRATE THAT - CONCERNING THE QUESTION OF HISTORICAL RELIABILITY - JOHN'S GOSPEL IS IN A BETTER POSITION THAN MANY MIGHT THINK. OF COURSE, NOT THE GOSPEL AS A WHOLE. BUT DETAILS SPREAD ALL THROUGH THE GOSPEL SEEMINGLY UNIMPORTANT AT THE FIRST SIGHT POINT OUT TO A SURPRISINGLY PRECISE EVANGELIST'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL AND SOCIAL DETAILS OF JERUSALEM BEFORE THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SECOND TEMPLE. THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS OF THE PAPER ARE CONCERNED WITH THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS QUESTION, FROM THE FIRST CENTURIES UNTIL TODAY, AND WITH THE HERMENEUTICAL DIFFICULTIES NECESSARILY ACCOMPANYING SUCH A TASK. THE THIRD CHAPTER IS THEN DEDICATED TO THE EXEGESIS OF SELECTED PASSAGES OF JOHN'S GOSPEL - MOSTLY FROM THE PASSION NARRATIVE-, WHERE I SEARCH FOR THE HIDDEN HISTORY.
The Interpretation of Matthew 23
Muráň, Benjamín ; Mrázek, Jiří (advisor) ; Roskovec, Jan (referee)
This thesis is an interpretation of Matthew 23. It is an exegesis of a New Testament text focusing only on the text alone and its interpretation; moreover, it does not include history of interpretation and its use in liturgy. Individual chapters are gradually dedicated to textual criticism, comparison of various translations, synopsis, structure of the text, language analysis - where an excursion of the term "ouvai" is added, historical context of Mathew's church, historical connections, addressees, literary context, and finally interpretation of the text alone, which is built on the knowledge of the previous chapters. At the end of this thesis is placed concise summary of the exegesis, which includes results of the exegesis followed by a conclusion, where the message of the text is put in a way it touched me. I understand Jesus' speech toward the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees as a polemic, critical speech, but at the same time as an appeal to repentance. "Ouvai" should lead the listener to realization of wrongdoing and resolution to change. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Worship in the epistles of Apostle Paul
Matějka, Daniel ; Mrázek, Jiří (advisor) ; Roskovec, Jan (referee)
In this work the gathering of the church in Corinth and its problems are analyzed in order to understand Paul's theological thinking and intentions about worship. These intentions are brought into connection with Paul's usage of worship terminology. Further, the significance of the Corinthian gathering for the life of the church is discussed. The analysis of the problem of the Corinthian Eucharist shows that different groups begin the dinner breaking the loaf at different moments as they arrive. Paul denies that this dinner is the Eucharist and re-establishes it by quoting the paradosis that emphasizes Jesus' dominance over the Eucharist and community with those for whom Jesus died. Concerning the Corinthian gathering where charismas appear Paul presents the profession of Jesus as Lord as a criterion of true spirituality. The general criterion for reformation of the worship is oikodome as the benefit for the church that is Christ's body. Paul emphasizes the integrative character of worship. However, Christian worship exceeds all sacral forms and fills the whole life of a believer. That's why Paul likes using sacral terminology in a transferred meaning. The Corinthian gathering for the Eucharist is very important for the church suffering from schism. The existing way of eating the dinner encourages the...
Sibylline Oracles I-II and VI-VIII, Questions of Bartholomew, New Testament Apocrypha in Czech Translation.
Dus, Jan A. ; Pokorný, Petr (advisor) ; Roskovec, Jan (referee) ; Radová, Irena (referee)
The Kingdom of God in Paul
Bandhauer, Petra ; Roskovec, Jan (referee) ; Mrázek, Jiří (advisor)
This graduation work focuses on the topic of Kingdom of God which does not belong to the main topics in Pauls Epistles. It seems that the topic of Kingdom of God is not in the centre of Pauls theological concern because there are not often mentioned words about Kingdom of God, Gods government, reign and governing in the Pauls true epistles. But it is in strange discrepancy with synoptical gospels where the topic of Kingdom of God is a principal and in fact main topic. Providing apostle Paul met and knew the tradition about Jesus Christ it must be possible to find some traces of this tradition in his Epistles. The work first researches Pauls theological resources which are based on his Jewish pharisee education. Consequently it interprets Pauls texts, in which he comments directly or indirectly on Kingdom of God, and tries to find relation with texts about Kingdom of God in the synoptical gospels. Then the work tries to describe the character of the topic of Kingdom of God in these gospels. Finally the work compares Pauls conception of Kingdom of God which came up from the exegesis of his texts about enouncement of Kingdom of God as the authors of the synoptical gospels noted. Freedom in the Letter to the Galatians: Eleutheria as a Soteriological Metaphor.
Cimala, Peter ; Pokorný, Petr (advisor) ; Tichý, Ladislav (referee) ; Roskovec, Jan (referee) ; Radová, Irena (referee)
The dissertation entitled "Freedom in the Letter to the Galatians: Eleutheria as a Soteriological Metaphor" deals with the old Greek notion of freedom (eleutheria) from the perspective of one epistle of the apostle Paul. The aim of the study is to examine the thesis if, and to what degree, freedom is a soteriological metaphor in the letter to the Galatians. An exegetical-theological analysis all eleutheria statements in the letter is preceded by chapters on (§1.) the history of research, (§2.) basic definitions of the polysemous notion freedom, and (§3.) setting the letter in its literary and historical context. In the main part of the thesis five sections and arguments are examined in which we find altogether 11 eleutheria statements (Ga 2,3-5, 3,26-29; 4,21-31; 5,1 a 5,13-15). The analysis of all eleutheria statements provides the basis to answer the main research question: Is freedom in Galatians a soteriological metaphor? Chapter five (§5.) focuses on Pauline soteriology, offering a fundamental delimitation of the metaphor and integrates freedom among the key soteriological metaphors in the letter Galatians and in Pauline theology. The conclusions of the research are summarized in chapter six (§6). The New Testament study presented here relates to broader themes of interest: the religious/biblical...

Pietak, Martin ; Beneš, Ladislav (advisor) ; Dřímal, Ludvík (referee) ; Roskovec, Jan (referee)
The aim of the presented thesis is to explore the questions concerning the use of the Bible in the catechesis of children, and this in the context of the contemporary paradigm shifts in theology, sociology and religious education. The topic is analysed from a fourfold perspective: 1. historical, 2. theological, 3. empirical and 4. didactic, all of them on the background of the catechetical ministry of the Silesian Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession in the Czech Republic (SECAC). in the historical part, the models of the use of the Bible throughtout the history of catechesis are reviwed with the main emphasis on the history nad present state of the catechesis in the SECAC as well as on the 20th centurys religious education concepts in Germany and in the USA. The theological perpective examines the place and understandidng of the Bible in contemporary systematic theology nad hermeneutics. Empirical perspective enriches the discussion by the results of many field researches conducted with respect to the question of the Bible and catechesis. Didactic (education theory) perspecitve strives to evaluate and summarize the previous findings and to depict the factors decisive for an adequate biblical instruction. The thesis develops the idea, that a proper connection of theology and educational theory,...

Korečková, Andrea ; Pokorný, Petr (advisor) ; Frolíková, Alena (referee) ; Roskovec, Jan (referee)
As the theme for my thesis I have chosen the question of the formation of the New Testament canon, a question that is closely connected with the separation of church and synagogue. I decided to deal with the issues involved from the viewpoint of the origins of the Christian Bible, which contains the Old and the New Testament. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
A Unique Role of Jesus' Humanity in Paraenesis in the Epistle to the Hebrews
Paluchník, Pavel ; Roskovec, Jan (advisor) ; Mrázek, Jiří (referee)
In my work I am predominantly concentrated on the texts referring to Jesus' humanity. The main task of my dissertation is to assess the author's comprehension of Jesus' humanity and what impact it has on the paraenesis in Hebrews. The author seems to react to a tough situation of the readers who were possibly asking themselves, "how can this glorious, enthroned Jesus know what I am going through down here?" In the paper I will deal with two passages of Hebrews primarily: Heb 2:5-18 (including the introduction to chapter 1) and Heb 4:14-5:10. Both the passages seem to fundamentally constitute the author's comprehension of Jesus' identification with humanity, his earthly struggle, suffering and piety, which qualifies him as our Saviour, Redeemer, 'Archegos' and High priest. The author's detailed description of human Jesus is almost shocking for a reader. We see crying, praying and suffering Jesus, without strength and divine help at hand. This view seems to be scandalous. Yet, the author never separates this Man from the divine Son of Hebrews 1. This is very clearly, almost surprisingly, evidenced on the very place of Jesus struggle for sinlessness in Heb 5:7-8. The paraenesis is fully based on the fact that Jesus lived a life of an ordinary man in obedience, dependent on God. His obedience and reliance on...
