Representational Practices of Rebel Governance

Representational Practices of Rebel Governance Much of the literature on rebel governance has been focusing on the material factors that influence rebel activities. However, rebels frequently engage in practices that have no clear material benefit. Instead, these are meant to increase their legitimacy with certain groups, by representing a normative conception of authoritative rule. This thesis offers a process-based theoretical framework for understanding these "representational practices" by considering them as acts of communication from rebel senders to their audiences. To this extent, rebels frame themselves as continuous, time-transcendent rulers (content) within authoritative normative frameworks (contexts) and use various "artifacts" and bodily movement as "channels" to transmit these claims. This model is then applied to an interpretive, single-case study of the "Islamic State" rebels in Iraq and Syria between 2014 and 2017. It is found that the model can explain many of the IS's activities. Position of space private sector in China and USA

The bachelor thesis deals with the differences in approach of liberal-democratic regimes and authoritative regimes in relation to the private space sector in terms of the long-term sustainability of each approach, in the cases of the People's Republic of China and the United States of America as representatives of these regimes. The aim of the thesis is to find out the relationship of the cases to the private space sector from the beginning of the "New Space" era to the present day. "New Space" represents the rise of commercial actors and private companies who intend to use the space for commercial gain. This "New Space" ecosystem forms new relationships between countries and private actors, which also leads to changes in national space programs. While states maintain their leading position in the space domain, they are increasingly linked to the "New Space" actors. However, the state-private sector relationship differs depending on the regime in which the country operates. In the first part of my thesis, I describe the principles of both examined regimes and set out the basic conditions for the long- term sustainability of the private space sector according to Mahan's theory. International Jewish organizations as political actors

This bachelor thesis builds on the existing discussion about transnational interactions and transnational advocacy networks with a case study dedicated to Jewish NGOs. Activities of five international Jewish organisations in relation to the Visegrad Group countries were analysed, with attention focused on advocacy of the international Jewish organisations against anti- Semitism. The activities of the NGOs were interpreted in the context of the transnational advocacy networks theory by Margaret E. Keck and Kathryn Sikkink which is suitable especially for value-oriented political actors. The thesis describes the strategies by which the international Jewish organizations try to enter politics to advance their own agendas. Public statements responding to current political events, direct calls on political authorities to change behaviour or political decisions, arranging face-to-face meetings with political authorities and forming coalitions with local Jewish communities were identified as the most frequently used strategies by the international Jewish organisations to enter politics. 1 Introduction to the Thesis and the Importance of the Topic The sorting and the categorization of individuals and groups by their capacity and inclination to risky behavior or level of dangerousness has been and remains an essential function of security apparatus of the state and a vital component in state security. Practices of this kind became even more important in the age of international terror. The western world and specifically the United States has been the primary target of international terror suffering numerous terrorist attacks including the 9/11 attacks that became thedefining moment of how security functions in themodern world. While what we call "western world" is dominantly defined by liberal democratic political order, many of its societies and specifically the US is also defined by atechnology-enabled environment that scholarship characterizes as "surveillance society" (Gandy 1989, Lyon 2001, Lyon & Bauman 2012). Analyzing the Effects of Ethnicity on Internal Armed Conflicts in Burma: Identity Crisis and the Struggle for Recognition

While it is a widely accepted argument that ethnicity and armed conflicts are inextricably linked, there is little understating regarding in which conditions and how exactly ethnicity affects armed conflicts, which this thesis aims to explain through a qualitative case study on Burma, a Southeast Asian nation where what is known as ethnic armed organizations and the national armed forces of Burma-the Tatmadaw-have been at war since Burma got independence from Britain in 1948. While ethnicity can turn into a source of conflict in certain situations, ethnic differences per se are not the cause of conflict. However, ethnicity and ethnic groups can produce negative effects in certain situations. As the main research question, this study asks: In which conditions and how 'ethnicity' produce adverse effects that fuel armed conflicts? In addition to the main research question, this study will test three hypotheses in relation of the main research question to get a clear picture of the adverse effects of ethnicity on armed conflicts. The Effects of Climate Change on Migration and Its Implication on the Mediterranean World

The effects of climate change and global warming and the conversations surrounding it are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The future predictions of the impact of climate change on the planet present daunting challenges for people around the globe, especially for the Mediterranean littoral, which has been labeled as a climate "hot spot". The paper focuses on the effects of climate change on migration patterns in the Mediterranean region to understand what a warmer future in the Mediterranean may look like to develop policies and strategies that may mitigate some of the more negative outcomes. The paper's main objective is to answer the following question; what are the links between migration patterns and climate change in the Mediterranean region? To the question, it is important to first define and place the theoretical framework firmly in the context that the paper is covering, such as the political, economic, social, environmental and demographic factors. Once these factors are defined, they are applied to real-world case studies in the form of North Africa and Syria through Black, Adger, et al.'s framework of drivers of migration through qualitative and quantitative data that comes from secondary resources.
